Caught in the act

Usually when I run home for dinner, I catch the peacocks hanging out on our front porch. But today, this is what I found. Lately I was wondering why my flowers looked so tough and … literally gone. Yea, I think I found the reason!

It's really a pretty good spot for this cat. At least we know where he is now.

It’s really a pretty good spot for this cat. At least we know where he is now.

It was another busy night at the farm. Daryl went to rake the hay that he cut the other night.  We were hoping to get it baled tonight with small bales, but about the time that we would get out there after work, the hay would be too tough. So Daryl thought if he got it at least raked, maybe by tomorrow it’ll be fit in the afternoon and our neighbor can get it round baled for us. I like to have some small bales in the barn for the winter, and we thought maybe on the new seeding we could have a chance to bale that into the small ones. I guess we’ll see what we’re doing when that time comes around. Today was William’s last day of his summer job, and tonight he was busy getting some odd jobs started that he hadn’t had a chance to do while he was working. His first thing that he wants to do is to bring back some scrap metal and working on that took up most of his night. I worked on making a banner for a friend that she wants to use in a parade this coming weekend. Getting the letters and banner organized wasn’t hard, but holy cow did it take a long time to get the letters looking nice on it. I finally got done after 10 pm,  and I was happy that Daryl took it into town to her tonight. I didn’t even start the other things that needed to get done yet tonight. I’m guessing that  it’ll be a late night at our house.

Fort Atkinson Wednesday Night Band Concert

William and I went to visit my Mom tonight and while we were in the area, I wanted to head over to Fort Atkinson to check out the Band Concert that they hold on Wednesday nights. I kind of thought it would be cool, but it was REALLY something to see! I convinced William to go with me if I would buy him a malt from the Moo Mobile, so off we went. As we pulled up to the town it really didn’t look like there was too many people there, but I parked the car anyway and walked down the street. As I turned the corner, Holy Smokes! There were people in lawn chairs on one side of the street and others  just hanging out listening to the music.20130814_204753_resized Now you have to remember that this is a little town of about 350 people and all the people there pretty much knew each other. As I was standing in line to get a Raspberry and a Chocolate malt, I found out that they have been having guests come and play on Wednesday nights since 1898. That’s 115 years! I kind of felt bad that I hadn’t come to this before. I also learned while I was in the ice cream line, that people from all over come to play with the band. Some of the people drive for over an hour just to get a chair on the portable band platform. And tonight, they even ran out of room, so they had to add extra seating for the musicians. When I asked where they get their music from, I was told that they play a little bit of everything from Patriotic music to Polka’s. They even had a Music Composer that liked to play with them write specific music only for this community band. Now just how cool is that?  And to top off the night, when I finally made it up to the malt window and ordered our two malts, I found out that they were 50 cents each. This was the last concert of the year, but I definitely want to come back again next year!

Rock Stars

My friend and I have been golfing now for about 7 or 8 years together, and you can say that we might just not be the best golfers. The reason that I say this is because in all those years, we’ve only finished all 9 holes either once or twice. We’re still debating just how many times it actually was. So tonight we got through all 9 holes,  and even had time to spare! It’s amazing when you have a couple of  good hits, just how many more holes you can golf in a night. Of course when we would hit a good shot we had a lot of the old high fives going on between us, and even now and then if you were golfing close to us there were also some pretty good celebration dancing jigs to be seen. It was like we were on a golfing tour or something! OK, not really. But we were so close to getting a Par on one of the holes and not one of the holes did we have to cheat and say that our score was under ten. It actually was! Now granted, we are playing best ball. But still, it only took us about 1 & 1/2 hours to play the round. Ya… Rock Stars!20130813_190846_resized

Back at it

You know that things are back to normal when you have to set the alarm clock don’t you? Well, I guess we all have to go to work so that we can play right?  Today was busy. After work it was time to get started on the laundry. Now granted after you’re gone for awhile, it’s pretty easy. All you have to do is to scoop everything up and then just shove it into the washer and hit start. You can’t go wrong and you know that everything probably needs a little freshening up! So with the laundry going, Daryl came hone from work and soon he was back out the door to cut hay. I’m still trying to make better meals for supper, so I put a turkey roast in the oven and headed outside myself. Even though we’ve got a little rain over the course of the past few days, the flowers still needed some water. So as I was watering the flowers as you can see in the picture below, I had some help. 20130812_182458_resizedBoth the little kitty and dog think that this bird bath is a personal water bowl! After a run and a little housework, we ate supper,  watched a little TV,  and off to bed we all went.

Home from the Cabin

These past 5 days at the cabin was once again a great time. The weather on the other hand didn’t cooperate as well. Now it didn’t rain, but it was really windy and not weather that you’d go out on the lake for the afternoon and just hang out in your swimsuit. So of course we ate a lot, and laughed a lot, we played cards, and played some other games. We also did a couple of road trips to some local hang outs that we haven’t been to before. Check out the white sweatshirt in the picture below. It’s a picture of us four when we were at the cabin about 20 years ago!

Check out the white sweatshirt that the middle girl is wearing. Too Funny!

But you know what? Even if the weather wasn’t the warmest, we still had a lot of fun. When we started out, were a little worried packing the Pacifica. And I even put the car topper on top of it to give us more room! But with a lot of luck and having all the spaces in the car filled (yes even by everyone’s feet) off we went.IMG_0605 Our friends dog even fit in the car in the middle of two of us. Because the weather was chilly, every night we ended up making a fire in the cabin to heat it up before we went to bed. If you remember, there’s no electricity or running water in the cabin.

Our bathroom for the weekend

Our bathroom for the weekend

In the mornings when I would brush my teeth, I would take a small glass of water and my toothbrush loaded with toothpaste and head outside. One of the first days that we were there, I noticed that this one flower seemed to look a little different. And I was glad that I didn’t get too close! DSCN7098bSo even though the weather wasn’t warm enough to lay out in the lake, it was still warm enough to jump in the lake to get cleaned up and a fire after that felt good! Now some people just can’t believe that this is how we take a bath. But since this is the only cabin on the lake, and we only use biodegradable soap, you’re hair and skin feel just fantastic after you get out.DSCN7148a

DSCN7076aAnd Sunday came too soon and it was time to head back home. We always clean the cabin before we leave for home at the end of the weekend so the next group of people coming up have a nice clean cabin when they open the door. And as we were cleaning, I noticed that some of the pictures fell down off this one cork board. As I was organizing and putting them back up, one of the pictures just caught my eye. It was a picture of our friends Grandfather who built the cabin that we stay at. The picture shows him in front of a smaller hunting cabin that he built before he built the one we stay at now.IMG_0621 copyNow granted the smaller cabin sure doesn’t look like it would have 8 double beds, 1 king bed, and four single beds in it like the one now, but I still really like the picture. I thought to myself as I was pinning it back up to where it belonged on the wall, if her Grandpa ever could have imagined how many lives he’s touched by building the bigger cabin. My friend pretty much grew up here in the summer months when she was a kid with her cousins, and my friends and I have been coming up right after high school graduation. You would catch us either laying on the lake on our air mattresses or sitting around the fireplace having in depth conversations about boys, then as the years went by… husbands, kids, and then probably work conversations. We’ve gone to each other’s weddings, kid’s weddings, and now some of those kids will be starting families soon.  So thinking about the Grandpa,  I don’t think he could have ever imagined when he built the cabin that a group of four girls for over 30 years can just spend a couple of days at the cabin that he built, doing pretty much nothing, and have the best time doing it!IMG_0623And as the gate gets closed for another year, it’s not the weather that’ll be the memory, but the weekend that you got to have with your friends just hanging out. That will be the memory that I’ll keep.

Gone Fishing

Yup, it’s that time of the year again. It’s the time when some of my girlfriends and I head up to the North country for a long weekend. Now I know that the title of this blog says ‘Gone Fishing’ and I think I should explain. We’ve only gone fishing maybe twice in over 30+ years since we’ve gone up north. But quite a long time ago we would get such grief from people that we would actually go up north without our husbands and kids, so we came up with a plan. We listened close to what some of the guys were saying when they went away for the weekends without their spouse’s,  and soon our story was to say that we were going fishing for the weekend. No one would believe that we would go hunting, but the fishing story was a good one.  I’m even thinking that we’d be doing most of the same stuff that the guys would be doing anyway on their ‘fishing’ trips. We get up late, eat a huge breakfast, go hang out on the lake for the day, and then eat some more. And during the course of the weekend, we might end up playing some cards. See, it’s that much different than the guy’s when they go off fishing. But there is one difference and  that is when we are on the lake, we are on our floaties and just hang out for the afternoon. I’m a little worried this year though. The weather turned a lot colder and I’m not sure that it’ll be warm enough to go in the lake. But I’m not going to freak out about it now, and I’ll guess we’ll see tomorrow when we get there if it’ll be warm enough. The cabin that we stay at is way up north in the National Forest and with no electricity or cell phone service, I’ll have to catch up with the blog when I get back on Sunday.

Until then – wish us luck on our ‘Fishing Trip’ 🙂

Million Dollar Rain

When you get a rain in July or August, a lot of farmers say that it’s a ‘million dollar rain’. With the extremely wet spring that we’ve had, we also haven’t had much rain after the crops started to grow, so lately we’ve been begging for it to rain. The reason that we wanted rain was because the corn was just setting ears and with the rain, there’s a good chance that they’ll fill out full and you’ll have a good crop. Now not necessarily will we get a million dollars, but at least you’ll have a chance of making some money. It was around 4 am this morning when it started to thunder and lightning, but we only got a drizzle of rain. Only enough to get some of the farmers crabby. If it only rains a little bit, you’re probably going to be drawn into conversations like…’I’m sure it rained at least an inch north of us’. Now of course there’s no scientific proof that this really did happen and when I hear this kind of talk, I just smile and try to get the heck out of the room as soon as I can. Because I’m telling you that it’s really a no win situation. So after the first storm passed us by, another one wasn’t too far behind. And soon it was raining. Yea! We ended up getting 1 inch and 6/10. Perfect! Now the corn will have at least a chance to get some decent ears on the stalks and the hay should also come around to get a couple more cuttings. It’s funny how just one rain passing through can make such a difference in your farm life. DSCN7072

Sunday Run & Drive

OK, I’m kind of liking this running thing lately. Kyle and William got me started running this summer, and for some reason I am still enjoying it. Who would have thought? I’m still not very fast, and my face looks like I’m going to drop over when I’m running, but I try to run a couple of times a week for 3 miles. I’ve got a busy week this week, but I’m hoping next week to try to start running 4 miles a night. I think the key word is ‘hope’!

So after a run this morning, and making dinner of  potato soup, garlic bread, and warm brownies out of the oven with ice cream, strawberries, and whipped topping (maybe I should have started the 4 mile run today!) Daryl and I got in the Chevelle for a drive. One of our local towns was having an arts festival and it sounded like a good spot to head to. We’ve never gone to the festival before, but it was something to do and off we went. The town that was having the festival was Cresco, Iowa and we had a good time being there for a couple of hours. IMG_0604Cresco is the home of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Norman Borlaug. They have a 13 foot statue in the park to honor him. IMG_0600He is credited for saving  billions of lives from starvation He is one of seven people to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. and was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honor. I think he was not only a very bright man, but also a very busy man. So in the same park as this statue was  a lot of vendors, both food and craftsman. I ended up buying a bracelet from this one couple that lived a couple of hours away, only to find out that I knew the girl when she was little. It’s a small world isn’t it. We also toured the log cabin that they have  and all I can say is man oh man is it small. It has only two rooms, a kitchen downstairs and a bedroom upstairs. It was built in 1853 and at one time there were even two families living there. The last family that  was living in this house was in 1964 .IMG_0602In order to get upstairs you had to almost crawl up the stairs because we were like the Jolly Green Giants. I knew that in the older days people were much smaller, but they must have been REALLY a lot smaller.  Anyway, after checking out the vendors and visiting with some friends that we saw, off further north we drove. We went to an antique mall that I like to go to, and this time Daryl was with me. I wasn’t sure how this whole antique shopping was going to go, but it wasn’t too bad. But I did find this cute little metal tray that I liked and Daryl said that he made one just like it. What? How come I never saw it. He said he made it in shop class when he was in high school and he thought it was in the machine shed. Being a little skeptical on what type of shape it was still in if it was in the machine shed, I bought the one that I saw anyway. DSCN7070Worse case is that I’d have two of them. Off to Mabe’s pizza for supper and then home to put the Chevelle away for another Sunday. Just as we got home, the phone rang and it was Kyle calling from New York. Everything is going good with his summer job and it was great to talk to him tonight. I wish that he’d have better internet service where he’s at, but I guess we’ll just have to wait another month to be able to skype with him. I know how much I miss him when we’re able to talk to him. Sounds crazy doesn’t it. So after we all visited with Kyle, off to the machine shed we went. We had no luck finding Daryl’s art project,  so I’m going to look again tomorrow and I was pretty glad that I did buy the one that I saw today. I’d still love to find the metal tray that he made though. And how did we finish off the night? William bought a projector for his computer, so he hooked it up in the living room and found a scary to movie to watch. It was great to watch the movie in about 8 ft x 10 ft  and when he brings it out into the Roadhouse he makes the movies as big as a king size bed sheet. He says that it’s really easy to get used to watching movies on that projector and I’m thinking he’s right!

So now that the weekend is over, it’s about time to get to bed and start next week all over again.

Weddings

Isn’t that how it always goes – you don’t have a wedding for awhile and then you have two on the same day! That’s what happened to us on Saturday. We had two different neighbor families have weddings and they were both the same day and same time. But of course, they were in two different towns. It really wasn’t too bad to be able to attend both of them, and it was even kind of fun going from one to the other. If you didn’t see someone at the one wedding, there was a really good chance that you’d see them at the other. And we just smiled when we saw some of our friends at both receptions. Our town population is pretty small, so everyone was pretty much at one or the other’s wedding. Both were big weddings, and had around 400 to 500 people at the receptions. They both were really nice and everyone had a great time. I made a couple wedding cards for the day and it reminded me how much I really enjoy doing this. I haven’t made the time since I started to work again to just sit down and make cards or scrapbook, but I found out today that I kind of miss it.DSCN7068 DSCN7069We’ve got a couple more weddings coming up this year, but they are not on the same weekend. Whew, Thank goodness!

Just not fair

OK, I get it. Life if not fair. No one said it was, and I truly believe this. But when looking for a swim suit, could it at least not be so unfair?

Yes, I went swim suit shopping tonight and it was miserable. Now I have a ‘town’ swimming suit that I got earlier this year. I call it a town swim suit because I don’t think you should wear it into the local rivers or lakes. Why? I’m not really sure. It might have something to do that I bought it full price and I guess I think I should keep it for only inside swimming or something. I can’t ever remember paying full price for a swimming suit, so this suit is something that I don’t want to wreck. So because I’m heading out next week to go with the girls ‘fishing’ up north, I needed a swim suit for the lake. Now granted we’re the only ones on this lake, but I still needed something to wear. So off I went to town after work. I thought to myself, really how hard could this be? After I was standing in front of the first swim suit stand in the store and was trying to figure out where in the heck the suits were  – I realized that it was August after all and maybe this isn’t going to be so easy. Well, I putzed around and started to do some other errands and just kept my eyes open for swim suits in the stores. Finally in a store I found a couple of racks of suits. Cool right? It turned out that the store was just trying to get rid of them and they were not sized on the racks. OK, no problem and they were 65% off.  So I pulled out a couple that I thought really looked kind of cute and should fit. Wrong! I put them back almost as fast as I took them off the rack and realized that I needed to double the size if I wanted anything that might remotely cover what I needed to cover up. So after trying on almost all the suits that they had, out of desperation I bought two.IMG_0597 One was a two piece and one was a one piece. I mean after 4 hours of being in town, enough was enough. I tried them on for Daryl and he said that they both looked really good and then he smiled.    We didn’t get to be married for 30 years without learning some life skills now did we?
