Birds are the word

Last weekend we were at our neighbors and we started to talk about our  peacocks.  We were laughing about the time that we had the peacocks only for a couple of years and then one late afternoon  the peacocks went for a walk. And where who did they go? Well they went across the field to our neighbor of course. But the neighbor had no idea that they were standing under her window while she was watching TV and then they started to scream. I thought it was kind of funny, but to be honest – she didn’t really think so. She didn’t know what was going on and all she could hear was something screaming behind her outside. I guess it scared the holy daylights out of her! Now we’re used to their screaming, but  we found out fast that maybe not everyone else is. When they scream they sound like they are saying ‘Help me‘.  Anyway, it was something that this neighbor didn’t want by her window anymore,  so Daryl walked up through the fields and was trying to herd them back home. If you ever wanted to see a sight – let’s just say that would be one to see. Someone trying to corral a couple of peacocks in a huge open farm field isn’t the easiest thing to do. But eventually they did come back and all was good again. Now fast forward to the next generation on this neighbors farm. Our new neighbors wife was telling us last Saturday night that when they first moved to the farm she could hear this absolutely terrible noise during the night. She said her husband looked at her and said, don’t worry it’s just the neighbors peacocks and went back to sleep. Too funny! But this time they weren’t at their house, they were at our farm upset about something and she could just hear them off in the distance. I guess not only are they pretty, but also pretty loud!

And lately they’ve been in the TV watching mode again. They kind of go in streaks to watch in the windows and below are some of the pictures that I caught them in the act.

Sam will watch you walk through the room. For some reason I think this is so funny!

Sam will watch you walk through the room and seems to enjoy watching TV

We’ve also been seeing some Robins on our porch. The only difference is that the ones that we’ve been seeing are dead ones. I have no idea if Little Kitty is killing them or if someone else is. But today there was 2.. This makes a total of 3 in a week! And the weirdest thing is that no one is killing them to eat them, they’re just killing them and then leaving them on the porch in front of our door for us to see. I sure hope one of these birds wasn’t the one who was sitting on the eggs in the apple tree because that wouldn’t be too cool.

Yup, another one bites the dust!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom’s out there! It’s the one day of the year that we can do about anything we want and your family just kind of smiles and goes along with it. It’s great isn’t it?

So what did we do today? Well we talked about going out for brunch after church, but the weather was pretty nice so Daryl wanted to get some more planting done. He wasn’t sure that this would be OK with me, but I didn’t care . I wanted to get somethings done around the house and really needed to get my spring/summer clothes switched out. So off to the fields he went. I burnt up some old branches and weeds from last year and was really hoping to get into the garden to get it tilled. I have that tiller still in my kitchen just waiting to get tried out. Remember I have 30 days to see if I like it and the clock is just a ticking. But the garden was still too wet and maybe later in the day it would work. But little did we know that latter in the day it was going to rain again. Oh well, maybe next week right?

We ended up the day by skyping with Kyle. Since William is home for the summer,we all were able to get together to see each other and visit. It was a really nice way to end not only the Sunday, but Mother’s day!

Today’s job? Planting soybeans & working in the greenhouse

Daryl worked up the field this morning and was watching the weather pretty close. He wanted to see if he could get some of the fields planted with soybeans this weekend and if it rained too much it wouldn’t work. DSC_0025

Soybeans waiting to get planted

Soybeans waiting to get planted

It did sprinkle on him a couple of times, but he was able to get done with what he wanted. I’m not really sure what that was, but he was happy and so that was a good thing. I know that they always say ‘If Mom’s happy then everyone is a happy’ But in the spring and fall around our neck of the woods they should be saying ‘If the farmer is happy then everyone is happy’.

So while he was working on that, I wanted to keep working on the plants in the greenhouse. They need to be transplanted from their first pots into individual pots. And instead of being overwhelmed and doing it all at once, I’m trying to do some every day.DSC_0032DSC_0033 William checked them out and he thought that in the past years we’ve even had more tomato plants than what we have this year. I have no idea, but with everyone starting to plant their gardens,  my tomato plants won’t be ready when they’ll need them and I’m not sure what I’ll do with them then! I’m just hoping that they’ll grow a lot in the next two weeks and then I should be fine. Since I had this gardening thing going on today, we’ve been talking about getting a new tiller for the garden. We have one now, but you think that these past couple of years we could get it started? No. So I’m junking that one out and today I’m going to town to buy a new one. We’ve been reading the reviews on the electric ones,  so after talking about it for now a couple of weeks  – I bought one.DSCN8401The guy who helped me in the store said that I have a 30 day return policy on it if I don’t like it. Humm, I’m thinking that I’m going to know pretty much in less than 30 days if I like it or not. I’m thinking that all I’ll need is one hour and that’ll be enough for me. While I was in town I also did some coupon shopping. I’m trying to get back to using them because you can really save a lot of money if you just take the time to get them organized.  I know that I’ll never be as good as the people on TV who are the experts, but today I could kind of hold my own. I saved $55.47 or 43% of my bill. Score!

And for tonight? Well we’re going out to some Graduation parties. It’s the first ones that we’re invited to this year and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve made up a couple of cards earlier, but I also made a new one.DSCN8400

The photo of the day is one of the sunflower plants that was started in the greenhouse. I liked the photo because the seed was still on the plant. It pushes through the dirt to protect the plant and to give it food until it gets to the top of the dirt. It’s the dark piece on the right side leaf. DSC_0029

Where is Daryl?

With the corn in, I wasn’t sure what Daryl was doing outside. I mean if I was him I’d watch some good movie on TV to celebrate that the corn was all in. But he wasn’t anywhere around and to be honest I wasn’t too worried either. (sounds bad doesn’t it) I figured he was at the other farm doing some kind of farm stuff. And when he came home around 10:00 pm I was right. He was working on cultivating the fields to get them ready for planting beans. He’s hoping that he’ll get the beans picked up tomorrow and possibly plant them soon.

As for me? Well I did some errands and then William was home. He’s done with another year of college and he’ll be home for the summer. Some days the day just drags you know? But when I look at the kids and see how fast they are growing I think just where in the world did that time go?

For supper I had some chicken wings in the freezer that I wanted to use up so I made a recipe that’s easy and good. DSCN8394

Japanese Chicken Wings
2 lbs chicken wings
½ cup soy sauce
½ cup sugar
¼ tsp crushed red pepper
1 clove garlic, crushed
¼ cup honey

Marinate chicken in the above ingredients overnight
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Line a 9×13 pan with tin foil or parchment paper and put chicken on it
Bake for about an hour or until chicken is done.

And now that suppers over I wonder what movies are on TV?

Corn is planted!

Yea!! Daryl got done with corn tonight and what a great feeling that is. He ended up taking a couple of half days off from work to get the corn in and it seemed to really work out good for him. In the past he’d have to work really late at night and then have to get up early and go to his job in town. He did comment though that he sure dug up a lot of rocks in the field that we just picked. Yuck!!

And now a little rain would be good to get everything started. Isn’t that funny? We are saying stay away rain for the past couple of days and now that we’re done – it can rain. But not anything of that crazy downpour inches and inches of rain, just a nice shower would do 🙂

Planting Corn

Finally Daryl was able to get into the field tonight to plant corn. And it’s not only Daryl in the field – I think the whole county is either working up the ground or planting corn. There’s talk about rain in the forecast so everybody is trying to get as much done in case the weather man is right. As I took a quick picture of Daryl filling up the planter it seems like I just took one like this not that long ago. But it was actually a year ago! IMG_1563It’s crazy when you think to yourself if winter will ever end  and then when spring is here you kind of forget how long it actually was. So I helped Daryl just a little bit to get ready and soon he was out in the field for the rest of the night. IMG_1566As for me, I’m on chore duty for the cows and chickens. This job really isn’t too bad so I don’t mind. I’m also trying to train our dogs not to chase cars and trucks on the road. Now Reno is very naughty and has always done this, but I don’t want her to teach Kaiser. So after work tonight I bought a shock collar. It has all these different settings so when the first truck went past – of course off she went. I pushed the lowest button for a shock – nothing… and she was off like a bullet to try to catch the truck. So I kept going up the remote and then I found one that really made a difference! She yelped and looked around like what in the heck was that!!  I’m not that much into a shock collar, but then I’m also really not into having her or Kaiser get hit on the road either. By the end of the night when someone would go by she would look around like what ever is doing this, I better stay put! Good girl.

My picture of the night is a birds nest that’s in our apple tree behind the house. Now these eggs are much safer than the one that I found last night in the field! DSCN8386

Getting the fields ready

After work tonight Daryl and I headed out to the fields to pick some rock. Now normally I don’t really like this job at all, but because I really need the exercise and I have literally no arm strength anymore – it’s probably something that I should be doing.  So I found a bandanna to keep my crazy hair out of my face while we were out in the field and I put on a short sleeved shirt and some longer shorts . Oh yea, I also found some gloves and then out we went. We were only going to pick for about an hour, but because it was going pretty good and there were rocks to pick, we decided to keep going until the wagon was full. So as we’re picking the rocks out of the field I came across this little bird egg all by it’s self. IMG_1558We were picking by a waterway with trees in it, but it was pretty far away and I just couldn’t believe that this egg flew that far. But the only other option for it to be here is if a bird was flying over and out the egg came. Now even though this is a pretty funny just thinking about a bird doing that, I’m guessing that it’s probably not what happened and the egg went airborne from the trees. Either way I was shocked that it didn’t break! Another weird thing that we noticed tonight was that the rocks all seemed to be kind of rusty. Daryl thought that their must be a lot of iron in the ground in that one area.IMG_1559 Like I said things were going pretty good and then we heard a noise. With being out in the field and  in the open, it’s pretty noticeable when something or someone is in the area. What we heard was the Coop spreading fertilizer in our field next to us. Now normally this isn’t such a big deal and it’s really a pretty good timing. It meant that Daryl could work the field up tomorrow to plant corn. But with us in the field that the Coop was heading to next – it meant that we had to kick it in gear and try to get as much rocks picked up and we only had maybe 10 minutes to do it. Well, it was time to make fast decisions on which rocks were getting picked and which ones wasn’t. Up until now we were trying to get most of what we saw in the field and now? Well, only the very obvious ones were making it onto the wagon this time! We got out of the field  just in time before the huge Coop spreader pulled into the filed and we brought the wagon home to unload it in our other field’s fence line.IMG_1561There is a water run that we want to get blocked with the rocks so it was a perfect spot to put them. Our load was mostly smaller rocks and they will hold the water and dirt in place. Now to get them unloaded by throwing them off the wagon by hand and with the wagon back into our yard, it was a good job done. But I’m afraid that it’s just the beginning of picking rocks for the year.

So my picture of the day comes from what Daryl was working on before we picked up rocks. He was using the tractor and pulling out scrub trees out of the fence line. IMG_1554There isn’t too many things that bother Daryl, but these scrub trees … yea he really hates them. The picture if one that was pulled out and I’m not really sure why the roots are such a gold color – but it looks kind of cool and almost fake. IMG_1556

Field work started today

These past few days the farmers have literally put their equipment in the fields and were just waiting for a nice day to get started. And guess what? Today was the day! Everywhere you looked you saw people working up the land or hauling manure in the fields. Daryl was even saying that another day like today and he thought he might be able to plant corn . So that’s good! But before he went to get his machinery ready for tomorrow, he had hauled his last load of corn into the coop. Someone was in front of him and was trying to unload and their truck broke down, so Daryl called me to see if I would come and pick him up. He was going to just leave the tractor and wagon there and come back later to get it. So while we were waiting to see if he could get unloaded I went looking for my camera to take a quick picture. And guess what? No camera in the car. Now honestly can you believe that? But I left my purse on the kitchen table when I left to pick him up. I thought that I’d only be gone for a minute. So I said that I was going to go home quick and get my camera and be right back. He was still waiting so I was hoping that he didn’t get unloaded before I got back. Well lucky for me he was just about to unload when I got there.

When I was making this mad dash for home I was thinking about farming and how it’s kind of like this great big circle. You plant the corn in the spring and take care of it all summer, in the fall you harvest it, and store it to see what the prices are going to do. Then in the spring you usually sell it and then plant corn and do it all over again. Every year you worry about everything and hope that next year that you’ll be able to have an even better crop. Our last year crops did OK, but with the crazy weather we had, we’ve done better. So this year we’re hoping that the weather cooperates and everyone gets good yields.  So here is my picture of the day – it’s Daryl unloading corn at the coop.

These past few days…

It’s been a really busy these past couple of days and so I thought I’d better sit down tonight to catch up with my posting.

On Thursday during work I was thinking of calling Daryl to see if he wanted to go out for supper tonight. I’m not sure why I thought that we really needed to go out, but it sounded like a good idea. The time got away from me during the day and I just never got around to see what his plans were for the night. So when he came home he was wondering if I wanted to go to town and look at this one car trailer that we should rent to take one of our cars to town on to get looked at. And he said as long as we were out and it was raining – we might as well go out for supper. Yup, Score!! So we looked at the trailer and then we decided to head north to Lime Springs. Lime Springs has around 500 people that call it home and I don’t think that I’ve ever been on the Main Street before. Lime Springs has a mill that’s called Lidtke Mill and according to the information on the web, it was started in 1857 and provided not only milled grains but provided hydroelectric power to surrounding communities. Now I don’t know much about mills, but doesn’t a mill from 1857 providing hydroelectric power sound like it was way before it’s time in forward thinking?  It’s now a museum but since there’s also a Dam with the mill, there are some businesses that reference the dam. And where we ate tonight was called ‘The Dam Bar and Grill’. The food was good and it was a really cool old building down town. I think I would like to come back to this little town sometime and just check it out. I for sure would like to see that mill!

OK, so that was Thursday and on Friday I went to Rochester, Minn to meet one of our Customers from work. The sun was shining and I had a Diet Coke in the car – so Life was pretty good! On the way home I stopped off to check out and test drive some cars. We didn’t buy anything yet – but let’s just say we’re getting closer! Then a quick stop at home to pack an overnight bag and off to one of my friends for a Road Trip. We had planned an overnight stay in Illinois and just do some shopping and kind of do nothing. We found the hotel with no problems and then off to find some supper. She had been to this one restaurant that is called Poopy’s in Savanna Illinois. At about this time I’m thinking, last night I was at the Dam Bar & Grill and tonight I’m at Poopy’s. Either I really need to rethink my life or I’m really having a good time! The food at Poopy’s was good and had a wide variety of food. You can have a One poop sandwich, a Two poop sandwich, or The Big Poop sandwich just to name a few of what’s on the menu. So that kind of tells you what the atmosphere is like and we sure had a good time. The restaurant was around 30 miles from our hotel so we didn’t stay that late and got back to our hotel just in time to sit in the hot tub for about 20 minutes. They were pretty strict that you had to be out of the hot tub at 11:00, so we got cleaned up and just hung out in our room. Soon we couldn’t keep our eyes open any longer and shut the TV off and went to bed. My friend said that I didn’t snore too bad. What?? OK, I guess I do know that I snore and after driving today around 300 miles,  I guess I was more tired than I thought.

Saturday’s weather was perfect and when we hit pretty much all the stores in downtown Galena, Illinois. IMG_1545It’s a tourist town and was just tons of fun! The funniest thing is that the only thing that either one of us bought was some home made soap. I’m telling you – – living on the edge. I dropped her off at her house in the late afternoon and then once I got home I got ready to out for the night. Daryl’s and my plans were to pick up my brother and sister in law and head out for supper. (are you seeing a pattern here?) We laughed so hard at supper that my stomach just hurt! It was one of those times when just about everything was funny! After supper we went to an adult prom in a nearby town. We didn’t dress up and they didn’t have the best turnout,  so after a little while we headed to The Inwood Ballroom in Spillville Iowa for a fund raiser for their new floor that they just put in. With the flood of 2008, the floors were repaired as good as they could at the time.  It was kind of a big decision because do you fix it up or just close it? They decided to fix it up and that was a great idea. The floor that they just put in is a white pine and they said that if it gets wet again that it won’t have the damage that the last one got. But the history of the building goes back to when it was first opened in 1920. Famous musicians like Lawrence Welk, Louis Armstrong, Earl Hines, the Six Fat Dutchmen, Leo Greco, Guy Lombardo and others all performed to sell out crowds. I remember my Mom and Dad talking about going to this ballroom when they were kids and Daryl’s folks also said that they would be there. It was kind of a hang out spot not only for our parents, but it was ‘the’ spot when I was growing up too! So with the limited amount of Ballrooms left in Iowa, it’s really cool that we have one so close to us and that they decided to repair it after the flood for the next generations of kids to enjoy.

So now that brings me up to today. It was raining again.. of course.. and William will need to move out of his college dorm by next week Friday. And with the loft and other things that they had in their room, he needed help getting them back home. The kids had all the stuff ready to go and my brothers let us borrow their enclosed trailer to bring William’s stuff back. We were worried that with the rain (and some places small sleet!) that we didn’t want his furniture getting wet and it worked great! c
And because this is probably the last year that William will be living in a dorm, I snapped a quick picture of the boys in front of their dorm. IMG_1547I just laughed because Daryl was trying to photo bomb the picture but I snapped the picture just a little bit too late. But it’s still funny if you look close you can see Daryl in the background. IMG_1548 Before we left we headed over to the church where William sings every week on Sundays. Since we had the trailer he wanted us to pick up something that he said was just so cool. Do you know what it was ? It’s a 1970’s  stereo with turn table, radio, cassette, AND an 8 track tape player in it. He bought it at the church’s garage sale. 20140423_192818_resizedThe best thing is that everything works on it and it looks brand new. The side panels in front move because the speakers are behind them. He bought some additional 8 tracks so he can play them this summer. I just laughed when I saw it because I remember one time trying to explain what an 8 track was to Kyle. And let’s just say the conversation wasn’t going well because he just couldn’t understand at the time why there was music on this tape stuff and the tape usually broke and then the whole thing could be found on the side of the road as trash. I guess it does sound a little strange doesn’t it. William’s stereo weighs a ton but Daryl and I put a moving dolly under it and into the Roadhouse it went. I’m thinking that we’re going to have to crank this stereo up real soon to see just what it’s got in it!

The picture of the day is really going to be two pictures. I really like old water towers and these past few days I found two that were cool and caught my eye. The first one is in Chester Iowa and I just think the color on the tower is perfect!

IMG_1544 And the second water tower is in New Vienna. IMG_1546I found out that the water tower was built in 1899 and was only 200 feet deep but still held 30,000 gallons of water. Now that’s not very deep for a town well I wouldn’t think but it must have been because it was used until 1983 when they built a modern one. This towns well was even powered by a windmill when it was first built. Seriously, how cool would that have been?  This water tower was also added to the National Register of Historical Places.

Oh yea, and while we just happened to be in New Vienna, we stopped in at my cousins bakery and picked up some of these cupcake treats 🙂 I mean I hated to be in her town and not stop in to say Hi.

Turtle cupcakes - yum!

Turtle cupcakes – yum!

So now it’s time to get to bed and start the week over again. But with the weather forecast with no rain for tomorrow – I’m guessing that it’s going to be a great day!

New sandals

This is what we woke up to today. DSCN8373Yup, snow. But I’m thinking that spring will turn to summer real fast once it gets here so I thought I’d better get some bicycling sandals ordered. This is what my sandals looked like at the end of last year.DSCN8377 And if you’re thinking that they look bad in the picture let me just tell you that they look even worse in person. They were duck taped and gorilla taped together just so that I could finish Ragbrai last year.  So I’ve been on this quest to find some new ones. What I found out from one of the bicycle shops is that 90% of all cycling sandals are sold to people in Iowa. Now that’s kind of crazy isn’t it? But I think we’re so excited to be done with winter that we think that we’re going to wear sandals no matter what! I know that last week Daryl and I went out and it was raining and just plain miserable and cold. But I thought that I’m going to wear sandals even if my toes turn blue! It’s almost May and that’s that! So maybe the same mentality is for others in the spring. If it’s nice enough to be on your bike – then it’s nice enough to wear sandals. I don’t know. But what I do know is that my sandals should be here in about a week and I’m hoping that we’ll get our bikes dusted off and head out for a ride. Oh yea, I also hope that this is the end of the snow until winter 🙂
