It’s a busy Saturday

With my list made out – I was ready for the day!

First things first – I needed to do some laundry. My Mom always says that I do way too much laundry and I guess she might be right. But I like the sound in the house and if it is a bad habit at least it’s a clean habit 🙂

Then unload and load the dish washer and hand wash the rest of the dishes. Check it off the list.

Now try to make my hair look not so bad and then off to get some groceries and other stuff in town. I laughed when I lifted the back up for the groceries and had to make room for them because I went to the farm store first. Yup, this is how I roll on a Saturday.20161022_100259_resized_1

I’m trying some pellets for the little peacocks that are stuck in the chicken coop. When I gave them this feed, they just looked at me like ‘where’s the bread?’

I beat it back home so I could get some dinner in the oven and keep moving along with my list. Today’s dinner was going to be meatloaf because it’s an easy thing to make and to warm up later. I like to use Daryl’s mom’s recipe because it has normal stuff in it. Here’s the recipe20161022_105857

Well just as I was putting the meatloaf and green bean casserole in the oven the phone rings and it’s Daryl. He needed something from the farm store and could I run back to town and get it for him. He was in the field and didn’t want to stop.

OK, no problem.

Now normally I don’t like to leave with the oven going, but heck I literally plan on only being gone for 25 minutes Max! This time I really didn’t care about my hair. Just saying.

And just as I pulled into the yard from running the last errand in town, Daryl was there with the tractor and wagons. Good timing.

Well with the meatloaf and bean casserole done, and the oven was still hot, I put a couple of trays of bacon in to cook for this coming week. 20161022_124634_resizedIt’s a fast thing to grab when you’re in a hurry and what you do is bake it so all you have to do is warm it up when you want to use it later. Pretty slick if you ask me!20161022_133012_resized

The next thing to do was to wrap some soap and then start making some Bath Fizzys and Aloe Bath Bombs. These things are small but it literally took all afternoon to get this done. And I think my nose had too many smells going on this afternoon because I ended up with the worst headache. But I did get them done so that’s all that really matters. I had to deliver them tonight so I didn’t have a choice if I was going to get them done or not. Check it off the list.20161022_163454_resized

I literally jumped into the shower and with the car packed I headed out to a Fund Raiser for my cousin. They had a great turnout and I was sure glad that I went.

By the time I got home Daryl was in the house for the night. Whew! What a busy and productive day I had. I sure hope I have a good day tomorrow too!

It’s FRIDAY!

It’s FRIDAY! WhooHooo!!!

And not only am I excited that it’s Friday, but tonight we’re doing something fun and heading down to Cedar Rapids for a play.

See every month we have fun activities planned with Ma and this play was something that we were supposed to do a couple of months ago but it was rescheduled because of the rain and possibly flooding that Cedar Rapids was expecting this summer.

So tonight was the night that it was rescheduled to and after picking Ma up around 4:00 we headed to my sisters and then off for a quick bite to eat before meeting up with others. And the quick bite to eat ended up being at Pizza Ranch and I think I’ve got a new favorite pizza – Macaroni and Cheese pizza. Sounds gross but it’s really good!

Now this is a great way to spend a Friday and with our bellies full, we found ourselves sitting in the beautiful auditorium waiting for our other sister and brother in law to join us.

The play was about Ole and Lena winning a cruise and they actually even gave away a cruise that night to someone in the audience. We all had plans of what who would go on the cruise when WE would win , and well I guess that wasn’t in the cards for tonight because they didn’t draw our number.

We had a really good time and stopped to take a picture of us before we headed all back to our homes for the night. Even though the monthly trips are supposed to be for Ma’s Mother’s Day gift, I think us kids like it as much or maybe even more than she does. 20161021_213147_resized

Homemade Fabric Softener

I was looking on the internet the other day and came across a homemade fabric softener DIY project. I’m always looking for new projects – so I’m in.

The plan is to have some cloths that you reuse that will reduce the amount of static in your dryer and without a lot of chemicals.

OK, so first things first and find an old towel that I won’t mind cutting up. This wasn’t very had to do and after checking out our towel situation, I’m thinking that we should really buy some new ones pretty soon.

While I was cutting up the towel that I chose,  I tried to make the sections somewhat close to each other and then I put them into a container.

Next I filled the container with vinegar (yup vinegar!) so that all the cloths were soaked. I didn’t want them to be swimming in the vinegar, but to make sure that they were all wet.

I added some lavender essential oil and also some lemon essential oil to the cloths and now to try them out. 20161022_120941_resized

Now I normally don’t use fabric softener but I do use some wool balls to dry the clothes in the dryer, but when I do sheets or a lot of socks they do stick together more than I’d like because of static electricity.

Well now what should I wash? I decided to wash all the sheets that were covering the flowers outside. They were used not only to cover the flowers but the dogs drug them through the yard and the kitties used them to lay in the sun. Yup, good choice. 20161022_092809_resized

I wanted to do a test to see if you can smell the vinegar after the clothes were dried and guess what? I don’t think they smell like vinegar and there wasn’t any static. Win Win!

But honestly,I’m keeping my nose close the dryer for the first couple of loads – just in case you know.

And the photo for the night was that of the dogs laying on the porch with the Harvest Moon this week. They kept looking inside and wanting to be on the other side of the door. 20161014_184132_resized

Bath Fizzys

Sometimes I take an hour lunch from work and head home. It’s just a nice break when it’s a busy morning.

So when I pulled into the yard today I was happy that my baking soda supply showed up. And guess who was guarding it for me? Yup, Reno. 20161018_120513_resized

Now I don’t know for sure if she was guarding it or if she knew if she just stayed by it eventually I’d come around and pet her.

Well either way, I was happy that it showed up and I’ll be ready this weekend to make some more Bath Fizzys and Aloe Bath Bombs.

I’d like to make them tonight but some of the tomatoes that my brother dropped off were ripe so after a quick hot bath and then dumping them into some ice water – into the freezer they go. 20161020_190436_resized_1

2nd Painting Project done! – Tuesday

After work today I hurried up and started to work on the fence that needed to be painted.

At first I thought – well maybe it really didn’t need to be painted. It was one of those time when you think you’d so much rather just sit on the couch and eat Milk Duds or something and just kind of veg out. Not that I’ve ever done that before or anything  🙂

But I put on my painting clothes and headed outside because it was perfect painting weather and I better take advantage of it. I mean it is October and just like that the weather can turn on you. The old joke is that one day you’ll have the air conditioning on and the next day you will turn on the furnace. And with Daryl was in the field combining, I also better get to work.

It was one of those things that once you got started, you just really couldn’t turn back and well, it’s probably a good thing. By the look of the fence after it’s been scraped 20161018_165951_resizedI’m guessing that it was the right decision not to be laying around on the couch with my mouth full of candy watching some show like ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ or ‘4 Weddings’. Can you tell we’ve got a wedding coming up next Spring? I think I honestly could almost work in a bridal store now. I mean, I know all the lingo.. ball gown, empire waist, bohemian look, princess style…. See?

Ok, back to the painting. So I finished up the fence and with the last of the paint I started on the foundation of the house. Yup, it’s painting time again and I’m suddenly in the mood!

Check out the fence now!  BAM!20161022_125540_resized

And my photo of the day? Well it’s titled.. “ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST”untitled

Sunday – finishing up some projects

We’ve had our 4th crop of hay down now for some time now and just when you think that we are going to be able to bale it – it’s been too tough. So the verdict is in, no baling hay again this weekend.

So with baling hay out of the picture, Daryl transferred more of the hay round bales back to our farm from the other farm.dsc_0786 dsc_0789These large bales really come in handy when it’s 20 below and snowing in the winter. But I have to confess, I still really like the small bales of hay. I don’t necessarily like always having to bale them when the weather is warm and you should be kayaking or something, but they are really nice to have in the barn. dsc_0787These round bales are always a good hiding spot for the kitties to hide in. dsc_0788

As for me? I worked on some more soap stuff (I know you’re shocked right?) and also finished up a Donation Gift that is for a fund raising event coming up this next weekend. I wasn’t sure if I should wrap it or not with a clear plastic but for now I think I’ll leave it unwrapped.

It’s kind of a good basket – well that is if you like bath stuff 🙂20161013_204003_resized

And the best part of the weekend? Skyping with all the kids! Yup, that’s definately the best part!

Saturday work

It was a beautiful day today and it was even a Saturday! How awesome is that?

So what did we do? Well Daryl worked on farming stuff and I made soap:)

Daryl needed to transfer the corn from the drying bin to a storage bin and what that means is that you have to move the auger and shoveling out the bin. This has to be done so he can fill up the drying bin with the corn that still needs to be shelled. dsc_0790

So I was in charge of watching the auger and bin when Daryl went to do some errands quick. Now I’m sure that this job isn’t a bad job, but it is sure a boring job! I mean you just sit there and watch the corn going into the bin and then you watch the auger to make sure that it’s still running. Now I wasn’t sure what I was going do if it didn’t work, but with luck on my side everything kept working until Daryl came back home. Thank goodness because I had the shed all scoped out and all the animals got their afternoon treats.

With my long to do list waiting for me at the kitchen table, I was able to get a bunch of stuff done along with making 3 bars of soap that needed to get made.

I also spent some time in the scrap book room also which is always a great time and made a birthday card that was way over due!  20161016_115747_resized

Dehydrating Pineapple

Do you ever stand in front of the fruit department at your local grocery store and think ‘I should eat this’ and ‘that looks good’ only to find out that those things are still in your refrigerator days later and have been kind of pushed back behind the frosted cupcakes?

Well that’s usually what happens to me.

So the challenge is to figure out what to do with those kind of food and in this case it’s a bunch of pineapple that’s hanging out in our fridge.

And since I’ve never dehydrated pineapple before? Well it’s a good thing to try don’t you think?

I was kinda busy tonight and I didn’t want to just Google how to do it, so I cut up the pineapple into smaller chunks and put them on the dehydrator screen. Seriously this can’t be rocket science and besides that – they even looked kinda right.dsc_0784

I put the dehydrator upstairs in the kitchen so I wouldn’t forget about it and instead of my kitchen smelling like lavender or pumpkin spice from all my soap making  – it smelled this time like the pineapple.

After taste testing about maybe more than a couple handfuls of the pineapple chunks, you know .. just to make sure that it could be done or something,  I finally decided to take them out. Now I realized after the fact that maybe I should have Googled how to do this because they were a little thin.20161016_145451_resized

But the real test is how do they taste? Well they taste Great! I definitely will be doing this again. Well maybe the next time I’ll cut them just a little thicker.

Painting update

So my first painting project this fall is completed. I so wanted to get at least the garage painted this Fall and it was on my ‘to do’ list for September so I’m behind on my schedule!

But with all the wet weather in September, October was hopefully going to give me a chance to get it done and catch up.

And so the painting begins again.

Only this time I need to make it happen after work or on the weekends. No more time off for me like the last time I painted.

But I had the garage all scraped last weekend and with about 3 gallons of paint and 5 wasp nests that I had to remove – it was done. Check it out.

Hopefully there will be more white painting to be done yet this Fall!

Our little peacocks

When I was in the chicken coop tonight I just was so confused.

I saw the little peacocks sitting on top of the chicken cubicles and for the life of me I can’t figure out how they got there! 20161013_180935_resized

I mean they are little guys and that’s a really high spot to fly to.

So while I stood there just looking at them and wondering how in the world they got up there – they were also staring back and me wondering what I was doing. I confess, I must have looked kinda dumb. I just stood there.

Now our peahen is the best peahen Mom in the world! She covers up the babies at night by kind of sitting on them  so no one can get them. Smart girl. We don’t normally have too many wild animals with the dogs around, but we’ve had some mink and possums sneak in at night before – so it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Back to the question – how do they get up there? I think it’s a mystery for now but I’m glad that they are still safe and doing well.
