Mowing Lawn

Our lawnmower got sick the other day and it wasn’t good. When I say that it got sick I mean that we knew that there was something wrong and then it was starting to leak something out of the back. Yea, that’s never good right? Not for anyone 🙂 So Daryl loaded it up a couple of days ago and brought it in to be looked it.

Well the prognosis wasn’t good. Where it had the leak, it was also cracked.  OK, decision time. Do we trade her in for a new one and call it a day? Or do we have her fixed? After we found out what a leaking riding lawn mower was worth – we had no choice and had it fixed.

So with it being the end of August you would think that our lawn mowing days are over and that we could just schedule it sometime this late fall or winter. But the grass has done very well this year and needs to be mowed,  so we bit the bullet and had to get the lawnmower fixed this month.

Now fast forward and our lawnmower was done and Daryl had a chance to get it picked up and he said it worked really well. Who would have thought that we are still mowing the lawn though? Well one thing for sure, we’re sure hoping for a fourth crop of hay with all this good weather and rain that we’ve been having. And if that means that we need to keep mowing the lawn, I guess so be it!

Cards

It seems like I haven’t made any cards lately and honestly that’s because I just haven’t taken the time to do it. So with this weekend coming up and needing a couple of cards, I sure remembered how much I like making them. Now granted it’s also one of those things that in order to be successful I also need to be in the right mood and maybe that was also part of my good luck. I don’t know if you are also like that, but for me it’s really true.  So check out the two cards I just madeDSCN8208DSCN8210

And the birthday card went with a birthday box for one of my friends. It’s the first time that I’ve given a box of soap as a gift and wasn’t just sure that I should be doing it,  but I thought what the heck! I kinda think that it turned out pretty good and hopefully she won’t think it’s a dumb gift. I mean maybe a soap box isn’t a normal thing that people give now is it?

My first assorted box of soap for my friends birthday gift.

And are you wondering how those little kitties are doing? Well even though having them hiding out on the furniture on the porch is pretty cute – it’s also not going to work so good with the dogs. When I first let our dogs out this morning I put the house broom over the chair thinking that it would scare the dogs and at first it kinda worked. Then I just got so nervous that I ended up putting them in an egg crate and into the old milk house they went. I tied the front door just large enough so Checkers the mom can get in and out and it’s been working pretty good for now. It’s a good thing these cats are so cute and worth the bother! I’m just saying.20150829_110447

Rain

It’s started to rain last night and has been raining most of the day today. And even though it makes things pretty soggy, the crops are welcoming the good soaking. Version 2

Since it rained most of the night last night the first thing we were thinking about this morning when we got up was how cold and wet are the little kitties? I mean a potato fork doesn’t give you much protection now does it? Well the answer is not really. Except from big dogs that is!

So Daryl looked for them this morning with no luck before work and when I got home tonight from work I saw Checkers on the porch and she looked pretty dry. Yup, I knew just exactly where the little kitties were. They were hiding under the seat cushions on the lawn furniture. 20150828_154955

Now we just have to make sure that we watch when the dogs get out because this is Reno’s favorite spot and he’ll sit on them. Seriously how much more work can two little kitties be?

LOVE talking to the kids!

We had a chance for everyone to get together tonight to wish Kyle a Happy Birthday and it was great! It’s always fantastic when we can see each other and just like a broken record I’m going to say it again that I absolutely love that the technology allows us to do it!20150827_195944

And when I was thinking about what to write for our skyping adventure and Kyle’s birthday I had to laugh because if you have kids there is a time in your life when you think to yourself ‘Honestly do we have to keep talking about all the questions like why the sky is blue and how come the grass is green” And then there is the “Why” questions that seem like they will never end and you were always stuck in the car where you couldn’t get away!

But somewhere along the journey they did end and now that the kids are all grown up and you have a chance to talk to them you literally listen to every word that’s said and honestly kind of hope that they ask you a question or two along the way. Kinda funny how that changes isn’t it?

And now it seems like we’re asking them questions like “How do we add music to the Spotify listings again?”  🙂

Well here’s to a very Happy Birthday wish to Kyle and I hope your birthday weekend is a fun one!

National Dog Day

Today is National Dog Day and even though our dogs get into way more trouble than they probably should we sure would miss them if they weren’t around.

So here’s a post only for our dogs. Since both our families are full blooded German I guess the best thing to say is  : Viel Spaß/VergnĂźgen!

Guess what’s next?

Can you guess what I’ve been thinking about? Well if you guessed having bees – well you would have guessed right!

Now I’m for sure not thinking of having them anytime soon, but I’ve been talking about it for a couple of years now and well it’s one of those things that I don’t think you should rush into 🙂

So while we were down at the State Fair this past weekend we just happened to end up by the Honey people (not sure what their real name was) anyway they really knew their stuff. I’ve never had a chance to talk for sometime with someone about just what all goes into having honey bees. So this really nice lady gave me information and told me about a couple of workshops that are coming up in Iowa that would be good for someone thinking about getting bees.

Now granted I am really not ready to get bees just yet (I think I’ve said this now a couple of times) , but man wouldn’t that be kinda cool? There’s such a science to it and for me I would need tons of good luck and not so much science! But there is a girl who I know who’s father in law has bees and she said that I could hang out with him for an afternoon. Pretty cool huh?

Here’s a picture of the bee hive that was at the fair last weekend. Amazing isn’t it?

When you have a bad day

When you have a bad day I think little kitties are the cure!

Check out these two little guys. These are the ones still hanging out underneath the potato fork by the old milk house. So far so good that the dogs haven’t harassed or even killed them yet. Now don’t get me wrong they’ve got a bunch of spunk and can spit like the best of them. But they also look like little panda bears and to our dogs? Well they would look like appetizers.20150825_15301920150824_200613

The photo of the day is one that I took after coming home from a meeting in town. I know that I’ve seen a couple of other people posting the sunset from last night on other social media so here is my picture of our farm at sunset. At first I wasn’t sure if I liked the corn in the front, but then the more that I looked at it the more I liked it. Check it out20150824_200325

Soapy Sunday

We spent the day catching up around the house and farm and since it is Sunday can you guess what I did?  Well I made a batch of soap! I think I might call this soap ‘Morning Sunrise’.

Now for the last couple of weeks I thought making soap might be a really dumb idea. I mean just how many people would actually want soap? And when in the world am I going to make it if they do want it? But after dinner today I started to watch a couple of videos on the internet and once again I got hooked.

So today’s soap smells awesome! The only problem that I had was that I forgot to put in the yellow color that I had mixed up before hand into the soap. Pretty dumb! Now our trash has a nice yellow tint 🙂 But I’m anxious to see how the soap is when it’s ready. The reason that I’m saying this is because the oils used was Castor Oil, Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Shea Butter, and Rice Bran Oil. This is the first recipe with Rice Bran Oil that I’ve made and I guess we’ll just see what happens. Calendula Petals were added to the Orange Essential Oil side and the fragrance of Yuzu is on the other side with the Fizzy Lemonade color (which I forgot!). I also used a cereal box to separate the two colors when I was pouring them into the mold. Pretty smart huh!  So I got rid of the chili smell from dinner today that was hanging out in our kitchen and now it smells pretty darn good.DSCN8205

While I was messing around on the web today I also came across a trick that I tried on the finished soap that I had hanging around.  What I did was to steam the soap to get rid of any soap ash and well honestly to make them look pretty and shiny.  So I spent quite a bit of time shining up my soap. Man even that sounds pretty dumb to me!

Oh well, check out the soap supply that I have so far. The next couple of batches that I make I would like to try to make some more swirled soap along with putting in some pieces of the extra soap that I have into new soap as a design. Sounds like a lot of work for a hobby that I’m not sure that I should keep doing ! DSCN8206

Heading South Saturday

After getting up early this morning we got the truck loaded to bring William’s things that he needed for this semester of classes at college. All I can say is Thank Goodness for trucks! We were able to get everything loaded and packed in and soon we had a bungee cord on it and we were off!IMG_3299

We got a little bit later start than we wanted (we left around 7:30) but expected to meet up with him around 10:00 or so. Then if we had time we were going to go to the Iowa State Fair. We haven’t been to the fair for about 4 years now and that sure sounds like a good time if we could make it work.

We did get to Ames around 10:00 and it didn’t take too long to get the truck unloaded and we headed to the fair. What a perfect weather to be outside. It wasn’t too hot and even though it was breezy, it kept the air cool. First thing first – get the lay of the land. We started out with a couple of the cattle barns and to tell you the truth, I would stay in there for most of the day if I could. In the one barn we couldn’t figure out why there was such a line and what we found out later that they were waiting to milk the cows. There’s about 25 to 30 cows milked daily and they let the fairgoers help.

Here’s a picture of some of the cows in the steer barn. 20150822_130612They were getting ready to show their cattle and this one girl was standing and just smiling at her calf. I asked her if I could take a picture of her and her calf and she said sure! She first straightened her shirt and bib and then she did a once over look at her calf to make sure that it was also looking good.20150822_130515

There is tons to see and do while at the fair and I’m sure we didn’t see it all. But we did see the wood carving guy 20150822_153042and of course the Butter Cow! Now if you’ve ever been to the Iowa State Fair and didn’t go see the Butter Cow, well shame on you. (sorry!) But this is one of the main attractions for the fair. When we first got to the line to see it up close, we were a little sceptical but decided to wait anyway. 20150822_142758I ended up timing our wait and it only took 20 minutes which wasn’t bad at all! I thought for sure it would be at least twice that much. 20150822_143053Here is some facts about the Butter Cow: The first cow was made in 1911, each cow takes over 600 lbs of butter to make her, 16 hours to carve, and the lady who carved this cow has been doing the carving since 2006 after 15 years of being an apprentice. Other than the cow,  the other carving theme this was Monopoly this year and here’s a couple of pictures of what was carved20150822_14301020150822_143223

While we were waiting in line I took a couple of quick pictures of the many, many, many exhibits. And knowing that a couple of years ago there was over 14,500 people entered 9,000 +  exhibits in categories ranging from cattle to needlepoint to vegetables, I knew that we wouldn’t be bored waiting.20150822_14122720150822_14114420150822_144545

But I do have something that I would like to share. This is the the Super Bull that they have in one of their barns (picture below)20150822_125151and after taking a look at Ed  OUR  bullIMG_3301well I’m just saying that maybe Ed is the Winner!20150822_125749

Now the biggest challenge we did have is just what should we eat? With around 70 foods that is served on a stick and over 200 food stands, this really is a challenge. 20150822_121518So for dinner we decided on a breaded tenderloin which we cut in half and was more than enough for both of us, we also ate some smoked brisket and mac and cheese which was delicious20150822_161128and when it came to our unique item  –  we were looking for some breaded taco’s and guess what? With over 106, 642 people at the fair on Saturday, most of them must have thought the same thing because they were out! 🙁  Oh well, we weren’t that hungry anyway and decided on a root beer float for the way home.

So from checking out the old tractors 20150822_160615to riding the Sky Glider20150822_150029we saw sand sculpting 20150822_122929

a carnival 20150822_150124-1-1

an even camel rides!20150822_164153

And with the fair going on since 1854 and with the Iowa State Fairgrounds being on the National Register of Historic Places – seriously how can you go wrong?

The picture of the day is one that I took when we were walking around the fairgrounds. I think just the posting is really funny because they must have had trouble in the past to have to tell people not to do it, but take a look if the livestock actually went on the sidewalk. They would have to weave in and out of the crowd and benches. Just too funny!! 20150822_130657

Well that’s about it for us at the Iowa State Fair this year. Hopefully we’ll be able to go again real soon!
