And all through the house

I don’t know why we wait until Christmas to make our house smell so good. I mean I’ve done 9 Christmas candy platters so far this year with 3 more yet to go and if that don’t make your house smell good, well the overwhelming aroma of the ham in the oven tonight will definitely kick it up a notch! But maybe that’s why it makes Christmas so special. I mean if we do certain things only at Christmas time, it reminds us all of just how special this time of the year really is.

So I’ve got a ham in the oven with party potatoes in the crock pot, there is a Christmas movie on the TV that Daryl is watching, it’s starting to snow outside, and the Christmas lights are all lit. Yup, it’s Christmas time all right.  I stepped outside to snap a couple of pictures of the new snow – take a look.

Just give me 20 minutes

I knew that I was going to be close with the amount of chocolate that I had and the amount that I was going to need for my Christmas candy, but I found out that I did need to go and get some more. No problem. I would just zip over there after work tonight and pick some up. Well you can about guess that this just wasn’t going to be as easy as it sounds.

I worked a little later than I was planning on, but no big deal I can still get to the Amish store before they close at 5:00. So after work I hurried up and headed south to the Amish store that I like to buy the chocolate from. I can buy this chocolate in bulk and in 10 pound pieces. And with going through quite a few in a year, it’s the best option for making candy.

OK, here I go. So I as I’m heading to my favorite store I’ve got Christmas songs playing and thinking of how we’re going to have such a great Christmas this year. And just as I’m rounding the corner on the gravel road to the Miller Bulk store that I want to go to, I know that I’ve got only 20 minutes until they close and as I’m pulling up to the store I notice that it’s pretty darn dark in the store. But even though these stores are always dark because there are no electricity used, I still was hoping that there was someone inside that could help me. Well no such luck. They were closed. OHHHH NOOOO!!! OK, I’ve got about 18 minutes now to find a store that sells this type of chocolate. Here I go. I jump back into my car and head back to the highway, next stop is the Yoder store. I pull into their driveway and head into the store. As I’m asking them if they have the chocolate they are trying to have a conversation with me and all I’m thinking is literally tick tock tick tock.. the time is just going by. They suggest going to a Breightsbach (no idea on how to spell this name) store and if I head to the next 4 way stop and take a right, and then I kind of quit listening. I’m sure that I’ll be able to find it right? So back into my car I go and head to the highway. Now I’m driving and see a 4 corner but no stop signs – do you think she meant this one? Oh man how I wish I would have paid more attention to her now. So I keep driving and see a sign for Deitweiler store (spelling ?) and I hit the brakes and take a sharp left hand turn. I go about 1/4 mile and see the store. When I ask if they have any bulk chocolate they tell me no but Breighsbach’s do. Yea, I got the memo. So this time I listen closer to the directions and I’m supposed to take a right when I get to the paved road and then take the first left on the gravel road. I’ll need to drive by the cemetery and then take the next right. I should see the store after that. OK, I better get going because I’ve only got about 8 minutes left before they close. Now of course I won’t die or anything if I don’t get there in time, but it’s about a 45 minute drive from home and giving 1 1/2 hours up this week for coming back for the chocolate is not my first choice. So I get back into the car and head to the highway. And for Christmas music? No way – I needed to focus. Finally I find the turn that I’m supposed to take and see the store. It was 4:57 and I apologized to the young girl behind the cash register  when I walk in the door. When I ask if they have chocolate they said ‘Of course’. Yippeee!!! When I said that it was hard for me to find it tonight with Miller’s closed and everything, the very nice person helping me said really? She said that pretty much everyone in the area sells it. 🙂DSCN8434

Christmas Cookies

Guess who came to visit us tonight? It was Ma with a container of cookies!! Whoot Hooot!! And not just any kind of cookies – these were Christmas cookies. Now don’t get me wrong, I do like to be in the kitchen fussing away with candy and other baked things, but I really don’t like to make cut out cookies. So how can you get a better surprise than this? And who said you only get presents on Christmas Eve when Santa Clause comes?  I think Ma was out doing some Christmas giving herself! Come to think of it, she did have her red sweater on….DSCN8432

First batch done!

What a great and productive day I had today. But first things first. Because our towns around our area are smaller, we have to wait until some of the stores open to shop on the weekends.  Well I hover around the house for awhile earlier in the morning and then I head to town. When I got to town and went to the one dollar type store they weren’t open yet (what?) and some people were literally standing outside the front door. Not a good sign to get the brown sugar that I needed. So I tried the second store that was in town and saw that they were open. I immediately went back to the grocery part of the store and saw that they only had 2 bags of brown sugar. Now I have no idea how much I will actually need, so I grabbed both of these and headed back to the car. I wanted to drop by the other store that wasn’t open earlier and saw that they were finally open. Yea for me! So inside I go and I did buy a couple of packages more. I for sure don’t want to run out brown sugar this time! And when I got home and put them with the rest of my baking things, I realized that I had 12 pounds. Too funny!! I guess with the 12 pounds of brown sugar and 12 pounds of powdered sugar – I’m going to be set for awhile.

But it really was a good productive day and with all the candy ready to be packaged up DSCN8429it didn’t take long until the first batches of baskets were ready for a pickup. DSCN8430

Brown Sugar

OK, seriously who runs out of brown sugar around Christmas time? Well if you answered Bonnie – then you are tonight’s winner! Yes, I ran out of brown sugar. arrrrgggrrrrrr!! I was planning on pulling an all nighter in the kitchen tonight and now that I don’t have the brown sugar for a couple of the last recipes,  I have to make a decision. Do I drive 30 miles one way to go and get some more or do I just call it for the night and get it in the morning? I’ve got a couple of candy orders that I want done by tomorrow afternoon and if I don’t get it tonight I’m really going to be pushing it to get them done. And do you know how many times I looked at brown sugar this week in the grocery stores? A lot! But instead of buying the brown sugar, I kept buying powdered sugar. Now what in the world do you think I’ll need with 12 pounds of powdered sugar? So it’s after 11 pm right now and I’m sitting at the kitchen table with my pink reindeer jammies on going over the plan for tomorrow. Because I had gotten only around 3 hours of sleep last night due to some crazy coughing spells, I think I’m going to call it a night. I did get quite a bit done though tonight which I’m happy for.  I usually measure my success by how many dishwasher loads that I had to do and for tonight it was 3 loads 🙂 Kinda sad when I’m excited that I had this much dirty dishes isn’t it?

Kids are home and brought a gift

Now don’t get me wrong, I love it when the kids come home. But when they also bring a gift with them – well that definitely kicks it up a notch! So tonight William brought home with him a new soap mold that him and his buddy made for me in their spare time at college. For them to take the time to actually make this is really awesome and I’m excited to give it a try.  And I hope that will be soon! Since I have an order in for more soap supplies that should arrive pretty soon in the mail, I’m thinking I’m going to be a happy girl next week 🙂DSCN8422

Hanging out in the kitchen tonight

I’m kinda pleased with myself with staying on my Christmas candy schedule for so long. OK maybe it’s only been day two of the schedule, but I’m still taking the credit for it. I mean you have to take it when you can right?

So tonight was making peanut clusters. They are so easy to make and the only bad part of them is being a little messy. So I made a triple batch and we’ll see if it’ll be enough for what I need this year. Take a look, they do look good! DSCN8418

And the photo of the day is one that I took of my Rice Krispie treats. I do make good Rice Krispie bars and honestly these were Awesome! They were the best that I’ve made for a very long time. I made them for William when he’s home this weekend. The good news is that they turned out so well and the bad news.. well that William won’t be home until this weekend! DSCN8419

I think I smell Christmas

Yes it is that time of the year again when your bland and boring kitchen turns into this magical room in your house that smells like chocolate and butter. Now honestly how can you get much better than that?

So tonight I started to make the homemade caramels for the Christmas turtle candy that I want to put into candy baskets. The recipe starts out with a lot of butter and sugar DSCN8415and then like magic it’s all done! Yea, not so much. It does take about 1 1/2 hrs to get it from the melting butter stage to the finished caramel, but the kitchen smells just plain awesome! So here is the finished caramel resting on the counter before it gets covered and into the fridge for the night. I’ll make two more batches and then it’ll be time to coat them with chocolate. Yum 🙂

Crazy Weather

It has been the most weirdest weather in the world lately. As I’m writing this our Christmas decorations are literally flying outside and I’m not only talking about only the Santa ones! Some of my outside Christmas lights must have gotten unplugged or something and are not working and then some of the lights that were off are now on. Maybe if I wait long enough they all will go back on. Yea, your right..  probably not.

Not only are we having a lot of wind, but we are also having a lot of rain. So even though our farm isn’t by a river we still have a small creek nearby. And on the way home from work tonight I snapped a quick picture to show that it’s pretty full. 20151214_152201Even though it probably doesn’t look so bad to you, normally this time of the year it’s so low that you wonder where the creek actually is. I’ve heard that we’ve got over 3 inches of rain just on Saturday alone. We are all glad that it was rain and not snow, but like I said kinda weird.

With the weather being very wet and windy you can guess where I am not. Yup, I am NOT spending much time outside. I’m spending my time working in the house getting organized to make candy. I’ve got about 9 orders for candy that people have placed and it’s just enough to keep me out of trouble. I’ve decided that I’ll work on them this week and hopefully have them all finished by Sunday afternoon. Sounds like a good plan and we’ll just have to see how well I stick to it.

Winter Weddings

Even though winter weddings can be very risky, they sure are pretty! With the weather in the 50’s today, I mean how much better can you get for a December wedding? One of my sisters had gotten married many years ago in December and for sure it wasn’t like the weather that we had this weekend. Here wedding had snow and more snow the week before and the grooms whole side wasn’t able to make the wedding. So 50 degree weather – Score!

So first things first, I needed to get a card ready and once that was done we packed an overnight bag and we were off! DSCN8412I must say that I’ve never been to a wedding venue at a stable before. It was awesome! This is what I found out about it: Functioning as a Stable beginning in 1838 using stone taken from a nearby quarry, the Palmer Stable originally was used as a mill, but nearby residents complained about the noise it created and the building was converted to a livery stable.  Keeping up with the times, the stable was converted in 1917 to house rental automobiles. Then it had a small gas station operating on the property directly in front of the Stable for 40 years before closing down the service station in 1999. There is a new owner and has taken over the Historic Palmer House Stable since 2007. As you walked up the sidewalk to the building, we noticed the old stone foundation and at that point I couldn’t wait to get inside. The wedding was Christmas themed and they even had a Christmas tree where you placed your wedding gift to the couple underneath it . Of course the food was great and with the bride and groom were glowing. After a night of dancing and hanging out with friends, we headed to the hotel for the night. We were with my brother and sister in law and had a really fun weekend!

And guess what I did Sunday when we got home? Well after the little nap, I made some more soap 🙂 First I cut my soap that I made Friday night -Squeaky Windmill. I tried to make it look like clouds in the sky. DSCN8414I’ve still have some work to do, but it’s getting better. So today I made some Hanging with Ed in the Spring soap that actually went pretty good. Hanging with Ed is soap on a rope and in the past I have not had good luck when filling the molds. But this time it I didn’t even swear. OK, I didn’t swear too much. Then to finish the night off, I’m on hold for Customer service for an on line company. I have been tempted to hang up a couple of times, but after I’ve got around 2 hours into this commitment – we’ll see who caves first!
