Party at Ma’s!

Mom is feeling better and her card club friends wanted to come for a visit. So today was the day that would work out for most of them to come and that was the plan. Since Mom is still on her shop vac machine (as she calls it), getting out isn’t the easiest thing for her to do right now. So she planned the meal that these ladies were going to have and between my sister and I we were able to get everything that she needed.

It didn’t take long after dinner today and one by one they started to show up. My sister was able to spend the afternoon at Ma’s to help make the lunch and just be around if someone needed something. It sounded like they had a fantastic day and not only was some serious card playing done, but everyone left with full bellies. It was a good day for everyone! The ladies had fun and we were glad that Mom was feeling better and was able to also enjoy the day.  But I’m guessing that she’ll be tired tonight and won’t have any trouble falling asleep either!

Money – or lack of it!

When I graduated high school and moved into an apartment with a friend, it was a time that I’ll never forget. Now we had absolutely no extra money, but we did have money to do the important stuff and man oh man did we have a good time! In the summer we would rent a canoe and go out on the Turkey River at least once a week. We really thought that we were pretty good, but honestly that could have been the refreshments that we had along the way. We also got along just fine for food because  I got eggs from my Mom and my roommate always had popcorn.. so you see we never starved. And for some reason we always had money to go out on the weekends with our friends. But now that I think of it, I’m thinking that we really were poor. But not all of it was our fault.  We kept having these cute salesmen come around and between my roommate and I we ended up with pots and pans, knives, china, and some pretty expensive glasses. Now when I say these glasses were expensive.. I mean over 32 years ago they were $50 a piece. (I never mentioned that we were too smart did I?) I think we were put on the secret list that salesman have and if they smiled and were cute – well you can sure bet we probably would buy whatever they were selling. And the dumbest part of the things that I bought is that the knives are so sharp that you literally could cut your finger off so they are still in their container. The demonstration that they did was to cut a really thick rope. At the time I thought, well if it cut a rope then it should be good in the kitchen right?  Yea, it almost cut through a cutting board the first time that I used it. And the china and glasses? Wayyyy too expensive to use and possibly break so they are still in their original boxes. I guess someday I’ll get them out, but for now they’re still stored up in the closet. So there we were, living off popcorn, scrambled eggs, and beer. But like I said, at the time we didn’t mind. When things got really tough we would take the cans from the weekend party that we usually hosted and brought them to the redemption store and get cash for some groceries or rent. And I can honestly say we never missed paying a bill on time!

I think that everyone needs to go through the ‘poor’ stages of their life when they are just getting out on their own. Otherwise they won’t know what it is to really appreciate the things that are luxuries and not just expectations. I remember our first washer and dryer at our farm. For the first while we had to bring our things to town and use the laundromat. Every week I’d spend hours just hanging out in the building by myself just waiting for the clothes to get dry. And when we finally bought ours with making payments -Holy Cow!  It was just awesome!! Even now when I do laundry 30 years later I still really appreciate having our own washer and dryer in our house.

So this past weekend I was going through some boxes and found an old tax return when I was living with my friend. I’m really glad that I found this because it really made me laugh when I saw it.  I sure wish I could remember why I never cashed it in. Take a look how much I would have taken the cash.  Too funny!!DSCN8017

First time for me

This is the first time that I can honestly remember that I’ve done this. What is it? Well, we were going to have our Card Club over in two weeks on Saturday, and it’s always just tons of fun. But the more that we thought of the night and the timing, I just didn’t think we could pull it off. It’s just a busy time in my life right now.I’ve been spending the nights at Ma’s in case she had trouble with the pump on her wound. Sometimes the machine makes this buzzing noise and you have to kind of reset the machine. Also, one of our friends had passed away unexpectedly and we are all still in shock. We really want to go to the funeral, and are trying to see when it is because it’s a 10 hour trip one way. And the last thing is that Kyle is still working on his paperwork and sent out some more documents to Korea today. We won’t know for sure when he will leave and it’ll be whenever the school sends his flight tickets. So back to card club… I sure don’t want to be a baby about not being able to handle the card club at our house, but it takes me at least 3 days to cook for it and I just don’t think I could do it justice. But by saying that I can’t do it was sure a first to me.  I sure hope that I’m not  getting lazy!!

Old Wives Tales

There’s  a lot of wives tales about everything, but since it’s been snowing and it did stick to the north side of the tree, that led me to investigate just what I could else that I could find out about these tales. The first two are easy ones. The one about the snow on the North side of the tree is that it’s supposed to be the last snowfall of the winter. (OK this one better be right!)

image The second one is about the wooly caterpillars. If you remember the one caterpillar that I found last fall, it had such a large band on it and it was supposed to be such a long winter.

This band is huge! It looks like a long and hard winter is ahead for us

This band is huge! It looks like a long and hard winter is ahead for us

OK this one called it right! Next on my list was the storm we had last Thursday. Supposedly if it thunders and lightenings in February mark your calendar. The mark your calendar in May. On that day in May you are supposed to have frost. So as an experiment, mark your calendar for May 20th. Now we hope this one is wrong! The last one that I think is interesting. They say that if you kill a spider it’s supposed to rain. I think I’ll just have to keep my spring cleaning until July. I guess I’ll just have to take one for the team!

Getting Ma out

We didn’t know if Ma was going to get out of the hospital today, but we were hoping that she would be able to. So Daryl and I put some gas in the car, grabbed some Diet Cokes and headed North. She went into the hospital over a week ago and is more than anxious to get out! That’s really an understatement to be honest. I think she was going to get out one way or another today. On the way to see her this morning we saw that the roads were not good and had a lot more snow than we thought there would be on them.  But if Daryl just drove a little slower it wasn’t too bad. We did laugh though when we saw this one car that kind of zipped by us and then up the road she started to spin. Everyone slowed down because the car was going sideways on the highway and then finally came to a dead stop in the snow banks on the wrong side of where she was going. She looked really mad and then she put it back into gear and spun out! We weren’t sure if she would get out but soon she passed us again and off she went. Daryl and I looked at each other and just laughed. The whole thing only lasted a couple of minutes. The one thing that we were glad was that no one hit her when she was spinning around the two lanes of the highway! Then it didn’t take too long to get to Ma’s room in the hospital and soon we had everything packed up and we headed home. We wanted to kill some time because the roads were not good on the way there so we were hoping they were better if we waited a little bit. And after some dinner we started to head home. The roads were better and we just could’t believe still how much snow was on the road. Check out the picture below. IMG_1350Our lane was partially covered and you had to cross over to the other side. Now it’s not too bad unless someone was coming! Another picture that I wanted to take was this one mailbox. we saw it on the way up to the hospital and I just couldn’t believe how much work it would be just to dig out your mailbox! Too funny! Daryl stopped along the side of the road and I jumped out to snap a picture.

The poor farmer who had to dig this mail box out

The poor farmer who had to dig this mail box out

The closer that we got to our home, the better the roads were. Ma got all settled in and I ended up staying over night just in case we had any questions that would come up during the night. Party at Ma’s!

The weekend is here!

It sure seemed like it was a long week. I was snow bound at the farm on Monday and we had the other snow storm on Thursday, so it’s good to get this week over and start again next week.

My Mom has been in the hospital since last week and we’re hoping that she gets to leave tomorrow morning. Daryl and I don’t have anything planned for tomorrow so it’ll work out good that we’ll head up to the hospital to see if she’ll be able to go home. The roads were not that great in our area when I came home from work tonight, but Daryl got home later and said that they really were getting much better. And by tomorrow they should be just fine.

Things around the house is quiet and I think Little Kitty pretty much sums the night up. Take a look

Now this is what you call being relaxed!

Doing something about the weather!

By now everyone is getting pretty sick of the weather and I am one of those people. It’s hard to believe just a month ago we were laying on the beach in 90 degree weather and today we’re all getting ready for a blizzard. We were under a blizzard warning starting yesterday already and this time I think they mean business! Listen to our forecast – start out with rain, changing to sleet, possible hail or tornadoes, fog, then switching to possible thunder snow. Now if you never have heard of thunder snow before, it’s when it literally thunders and snows very very heavy. If we were going to get that, they predicted 1 to 2 inches an hour of heavy snow for a total of 13 inches. Then when you couldn’t think it could get worse? They said that starting in the evening we were going to get 40 to 50 mph winds and complete white outs. Now that’s a fun night right?

When I miss work I have to use vacation and by this time I’m pretty much sick of giving up my vacation time,  so I’m going to do something about it. I packed my bags and plan to stay in town tonight. I’m ready for the blizzard – bring it on!

During the day the weather pattern was really unstable and they didn’t know just what type of weather we were going to get. But all of a sudden you could hear some thunder – and I knew that it was a good decision to stay in town for the night. We did end up with the rain, sleet, snow, and wind,  but thank goodness we didn’t get the hail and bad storms that others got!

So the only place in town to stay was a Bed and Breakfast and it so happened that it’s at also located at the winery 🙂

It’s the coolest ever! You know that you’re going to feel right at home when you are just pulling in front of the farm house and the owner is holding the door open for you to come in. Then as you’re walking into the house you see three big old Tom Cats sleeping on the blanket in the corner of the unheated glass porch. Not only did the owner welcome you, but soon you have this big Lab rubbing against you just trying to catch your attention. He was hoping that he made a new friend for the night. As I was being shown to my room, we walked through the dining room and sitting room that you found out later was built in the turn of the century. With the crappy weather outside you can about imagine that I didn’t get a good picture of the outside of the house. So I have one that was posted on their website to show you just how pretty it really is.

Picture from the Web

Picture from the Web

As we got to the top of the open stairway my room was just right in front of me. It was beautiful!

Not only a welcome sight but also a beautiful bedroom!

Not only a welcome sight but also a beautiful bedroom!

After a quick change into some more comfortable clothes, I opened the bottle of  wine that they make at the farm and it was time to catch up on some phone calls and TV.

Not a bad idea on a storm night

Not a bad idea on a stormy night

As I was laying on the bed I could hear some little kids talking and giggling in the hallway looking at the games stacked up in the corner. They were trying to figure out just what game they wanted to play for the night. As I listened to the wind outside, I knew that I might be in trouble when I crawled into the huge bed and just closed my eyes just for a little bit. But man oh man it was nice. Now I’m wondering just when are we going to get the next snow storm – and did I keep this Bed and Breakfast phone number handy?

Wednesday – a good day for baking

It really bugged me that I am not very good making bread stuff. I mean I can follow a recipe and everything so what do I have such bad luck? With my failure on the sticky buns on Monday, I decided to give it another shot tonight. I really wanted to see if bread with potatoes and 1 cup of honey tasted good or not. I got the honey from someone who’s father in law has bees and you will never get anything fresher than this honey. But I really do have a lot to use so I’m looking for new recipes.DSCN8004

The first thing that I did was to buy the ‘other’ kind of yeast. When I was in the grocery store buying the first packets of yeast I noticed that there was two different kinds. My theory was that the one that said ‘Quick Rise’ would be so much better because it would get done faster and I cut my time in the kitchen down.  But now I’m thinking that might just not be the case. So into my grocery basket it went along with a brand new roll of plastic wrap.

And was I successful this time?

Below is the recipe that I used:

INGREDIENTS

2 pkg of Active Dry Yeast
1  1/2 cups warm water (110 to 115 degrees)
1 cup mashed potatoes (no milk or butter added)
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter,softened
2 eggs
2 tsp salt
6 to 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

TOPPING

1/4 cup butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup honey
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 cup chopped nuts

FILLING
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 Tbsp butter, melted

In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. In a large bowl, combine mashed potatoes, sugar, butter, eggs, salt, yeast mixture and 2 cups of flour; beat on medium speed until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft doughDSCN7991

Turn dough onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.DSCN7995

For topping, in a small saucepan, melt butter. Stir in brown sugar, honey and cinnamon. Divide mixture into 3 greased 9-in round baking pans. (I used 1  9×13 and 1 round pan) Sprinkle with nuts

For filling, in a small bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon. Punch down dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface;divide in half. Roll one portion into an 8×12-in rectangle. Brush with 1 Tbsp melted butter to within 1/2 in of edges; sprinkle with 1/2 of sugar mixture.

Roll up jelly-roll style, starting with a long side; pinch seam to seal. Cut into 12 slices. Repeat with remaining dough and filling. Please slices in pan. Cover with kitchen towels and let rise until doubled. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Bake 30 – 35 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately invert onto serving plates. Or I used parchment paper to put them when they came out of the oven and them put them back into clean pans.

Check them out!DSCN7999

Now what was the lessons that I learned? First of all there must be a difference between Quick Rise Yeast and Active Dry Yeast. Now do I know what it is? I have no clue. But I must have used the right one this time. DSCN7994

Another thing that I learned is that when you open your plastic wrap (or any other type of wrap) punch the side panels in to hold your wrap in place. I’ve wasted so many feet of plastic wrap and tin foil trying to get some tore off. I usually ended up just ripping a huge piece and half way tearing it with my hands. And believe me, it wasn’t pretty. Now I’m so much smarter. Well, anyway when it comes to plastic wrap that is.DSCN7992

And that usually leftover rolls  don’t taste so good warmed up and get thrown away. But I took the first pan to work and we had some left overs with our pan at home. And even though they sat on the counter for over a day, they even tasted better than when they first made! Weird right?

But the final thing that I learned is that I’m not so scared of the whole ‘baking bread’ thing anymore. As long as I get the right yeast! 🙂

Happy Chickens

The weather today was really nice. Who would have thought that just yesterday it was so crazy! So when the weather is nice outside not only do we really start enjoying the sunshine, but so do the farm animals. Lately we’ve been lucky to get maybe 1 or possibly 2 eggs a day from our chickens, and that would even be pushing it. But today? Check them out. IMG_1347And I’m not sure who laid the really big one, but I’m positive that it has a double yolk inside. Our regular eggs would be considered extra large, so this guy is really big!

Like I said the sun was out today and it really melted a lot of the snow. I snapped a quick picture to show the snow on the sides of the road by our farm. I can’t believe how much they shrunk just in one day! That’s good because we’re getting ready for the next storm to blow in later this week. Now that’s not a surprise is it? IMG_1345

And since the weather was so nice, Kyle helped me take the garland off the front porch and the lights. We had Christmas later this year, so it was nice to keep it up for a little bit longer. Now taking it down isn’t a bad job, but it’s a job that is so much better when you have help. The garland went into the garden where the Christmas tree is and when it gets to be spring (someday right?) we’ll burn both of them. I’m hoping that with that fire it’ll also take out some of the weed seeds that are just lurking in the ground from last year. Man I sure hope that my garden is better this year!

Sleep?

With a winter storm warning for our area last night and work today, it seems like I didn’t get much sleep at all. I was listening to see if it was going to get as windy as they said. Now, if you’re thinking to yourself that this is really dumb – I agree! I mean if it’s windy no one can do anything about it right? Well just try to convince my brain that during the night! So as if I was getting disappointed or something when the weather wasn’t doing anything, all of a sudden around 2:30 the wind kicked in. Yup, there it was. Another snow storm. With our ditches around our area pretty full, I knew that if it was going to snow then I would really be in trouble. And just as on cue around 4:00 it started to snow. The one thing that I was sure of this morning was that I had to wait for the road grader to go but Daryl said that he was going to see if he could get to the highway before he came. When there’s no school, we’re not sure when we can get the roads cleared. So with his thick coat and hat on – out the door Daryl went. I was just praying that he wouldn’t get stuck because I wasn’t too excited about helping him try to get it out if he did. He was going to call when he got to the highway and it didn’t take long before the phone rang. OK, so he made it which was good. But he said that some of the drifts when he hit them went up and over the roof of the cab so I should maybe wait until the roads were cleared. At first I watched the roads pretty close to see if I could see the road grader coming, but then I got bored with that. I mean how long can you watch snow right?

Our yard today

Our yard today at noon!!

So I decided that I should get something done today. I have to burn a vacation day when I don’t go in and I sure don’t want to waste it. The first thing on my list was to get some computer stuff done. I wanted to download a bunch of pictures from our trip in January and today was a perfect day to do that. I worked on it for about and hour and a half and everything was going really pretty good. Then out of nowhere I see this sad icon saying that the software that I was using crashed. Not cool! All of the work that I was doing also was gone. I swear that I go through some bad electrical vibes sometimes, and I think I’m in it this past week. So I decided to walk away and try something else. I found a recipe yesterday for some sticky buns that looked good and since I’m not that great with baking with yeast I thought I’d give it a try. It’s the most crazy recipe because it has mashed potatoes in it! After I had baked some potatoes and mashed them, I was ready to get started. Now I confess I’m not that comfortable with baking with yeast so I followed the instructions word for word. I needed to get my water to a certain temperature so out came my candy thermometer and it was looking good. After I had it kneaded for 6 minutes into the bowl it went. It was supposed to rise and double in size in 30 minutes. Cool. While that was working on rising I finally made the commitment to organize our Christmas stuff better. Because we had my family Christmas in January I still had the winter village up in our kitchen until a couple of days ago. Kyle was nice enough to get the houses and all the other stuff down so I spent sometime to not only organize that for storage but also some of the other Christmas stuff. Now to check on my bread stuff. I was expecting it to be so nice and high, but nothing. Then I thought that maybe it wasn’t warm enough so I warmed up the oven and put a kitchen towel over the bowl on the stove to get it warmer.  While that was trying to raise, Kyle and I went outside to feed the animals. With Scarlet getting older and the milkhouse taking on ‘new’ smells, it was time for her to be in a pen in the barn. I climbed up in the hay loft and threw down some new bedding for her pen. It wasn’t bad in the barn today, but I sure don’t want her to get sick either.

Even I know that Scarlet is getting very spoiled

Even I know that Scarlet is getting very spoiled

We laughed when we took a look at Little Kitty today. She must have seen what the barn cats do to Reno’s water pail. Since it’s insulated they tip it over if it has water in it and then climb inside when it’s cold. I suppose it’s like a little sauna inside. The water was gone this morning so in Little Kitty climbed. Now seriously how can you get mad at something so smart? IMG_1329Now that chores were done I was sure that my rolls were raised by now. And guess what? Still flat. So now I put the bowl inside the oven. Maybe it needed a little stronger encouragement. While I was seeing if this was going to work to have them raise I decided to decorate on top of the cupboards where the winter village was. Just for a joke I put the old shot gun milk can up there and I kind of like it up there. Who would have thought? IMG_1334After supper I checked the rolls once again and didn’t see much progress so into the bath I went. And now that it’s time to go to bed I thought that I could kind of smell the yeast so I checked them again. So NOW they decide to raise. Well, it’s too late to do anything with them now so I’ll have Kyle throw the dough up in the hay mound for the cats. It should be OK for them to eat it, there’s potatoes in it and everything.  I guess I’ll have to try it again another time.

Not really sure if it's supposed to look like this or not?
