Happy Birthday William!

Technically William’s birthday was yesterday, but we were able to spend the day with him today. Of course before we could go, the snow that blew in last night has to get moved out of the way.

Cleaning the yard before we headed out to see William today

Cleaning the yard before we headed out to see William today

It’s just crazy this year. You get the yard cleaned up just in time for the next snow storm to roll in. And what are they predicting for Monday? Winter storm warning. Yea, who would have guessed? So when the sun was shining this morning it was time to make our escape and head south to wish William a Happy Birthday. Our plans were to take him out for dinner. So that’s just what we did. Kyle, Jude (William’s girlfriend) and also William’s roommate were able to join and that made it even more fun. The place we wanted to eat at was packed, but that gave us time to catch up with everything that the kids were doing. William had a really busy week with some big tests and I think he said he went to 3 job interviews. He was just beat. So we knew that this visit was going to be a fast and quick one. He looked like he just wanted to crash someplace. But after a great dinner we headed back to the dorm so Kyle could see the room before he leaves for Korea. Kyle hasn’t had much chances to visit William at school so we wanted to take any opportunity when we can to get the boys together.  After checking out what the kids did to rearrange the dorm room again, it did seem to give them more room. Next year they’re planning on living in an apartment so that’ll be even more room!  After dropping off the muffins and bread that I made yesterday, we found ourselves heading back home. It sure doesn’t seem like 20 years could actually have gone by that fast could it? I mean, wasn’t it just yesterday that we were bringing William home for the first time? And now here he is at college and starting his own life. Humm.. I know that I’m supposed to support the kids growing up, but no one ever said that I had to like it!

Extra Stuff

The weather outside was again crappy. No surprises here right? Well, it gave me a chance to catch up on some things and to do some baking. I was able to get all the extra stuff out of our bedroom today. I know that I did it to myself, but for some reason I’ve made myself the keeper of everything for everyone. I decided that maybe I should change this. So the other day I bought a couple of totes and had one for Kyle and one for William. Now when I find things that is theirs it’s so much easier to just pop it into the right tote. I’m not saying that I still won’t want to keep some of the things, but maybe just not everything.

Daryl made it home this afternoon even with the bad weather. Even church was cancelled today. So that meant more time for me to get some baking and cooking done. I had mushrooms in the fridge now for some time that needed to be used so I browned a pound of stew beef,  put in some of the wine from last night , added some onions, barley and of course the mushrooms,  and it really tasted good! It doesn’t look the greatest, but it sure hits the spot today.

Beef and Barley soup

The next thing was use up some bananas that we had sitting on the counter top for a couple of days. I had good intentions of eating them, but they turned soft and brown so that wasn’t going to happen. I found a recipe for some Crunchy Top Banana Muffins and they turned out excellent. I’ll add the recipe for them next week sometime.

Banana Muffins

Then after the muffins I still had some bananas left so I made some banana bread.DSCN7981 By this time our house is smelling pretty good. The last thing that I wanted to do was to make some energy balls. I had some coconut that was either going to be used or thrown away and this was the perfect recipe to use it on. This recipe is pretty easy and can be made about a million different ways. Once you have the basic recipe down, you just add whatever you like to it. Today’s are made with peanut butter, oats, flax, toasted coconut, honey, vanilla, craisins, sunflower seeds,& mini M&M’s. Yum!

So you see, it was a good day to use up all that extra stuff around the kitchen. For the rest of the day I made a couple of cards that I needed. I decided to keep track this year on how many cards I make. It’ll be interesting to find out how many that’ll be.

I still have one left to do and maybe I’ll get it done tomorrow. It’s for my Mom. She ended up having an unexpected surgery yesterday and thankfully everything turned out well.  She’ll have to stay in the hospital for a couple of days and hopefully get out the middle of next week.

As for now? Kyle marinated some pork chops with a home made mixture and is just starting to cook them on the stove. I guess sometimes it’s OK that the weather is not so nice outside 🙂

Happy Valentines Day!

It’s Valentines Day today and I had to laugh to myself how things change so much as you get older. What I mean by that is this. William is hanging out with his girlfriend in Ames, Kyle was hanging out with some friends, Daryl is still in Illinois for work, and me? Well, I’m home alone. Now a couple of years ago I couldn’t imagine thinking that I would be OK with that. But honestly? It wasn’t bad at all. I got Chinese take out for supper, picked up a bottle of wine to go with it, and had complete control of the remote.Life was good but next year on Valentines Day it will be even better!

My Valentines Supper

The dog and cat kept me company while they were sleeping on the blanket in the living room for most of the night… well until Little Kitty got kicked out when I blamed her for the gas problem coming from that part of the room. But other than that not much else going on around our farm. I snapped a quick picture of the moon. Tonight’s full moon is also called the Snow Moon. February’s full moon is called that according to the Farmers Almanac because of  all the heavy snow fall that we usually get this month. Man I think they called this one right!

Can you spot the full moon? :0

Driving home

I heard that this afternoon the weather was almost pleasant today but by the time that I got off work and headed to town it was the furthest from being nice outside. And if I didn’t need some things to put in William’s birthday box that’s getting shipped tomorrow, it really would have been a good night to just hang out in front of the fireplace. Once I got to town I noticed that you couldn’t even tell that it was windy out in the country. I can see why town people just can’t understand why everyone says that the roads are so bad when they are walking around and there’s hardly a breeze.  So I quick did a couple of errands and then I was headed back home. I saw a couple of cars in the ditch and met an ambulance and some police cars and thought.. Yup, time to get home. But I was really worried about our gravel road.  It’s like most of everyone’s gravel roads that we know around the area and it can get filled in with snow pretty fast. But as I was driving on it I thought that it wasn’t that bad and since I didn’t have to go out anymore, no big deal. As I just took off my coat the phone rang and it was our tax person. It ended up that I forgot to sign one of the spots that needed to be signed on our tax papers. Well back went my boots and coat and out I went. By this time the corner where I turn was getting pretty filled in with snow and when you got your front tires to turn the corner you gave the car gas and spun around to head north. Hum, I’m thinking this corner is going to be not much fun in the morning. It was too late to turn back so I kept going. It wasn’t long and I really didn’t know where I was on the road because of all the snow blowing. See the snow banks in the ditches are about as high as the car and when it’s windy out the snow just fills up the whole area that you’re trying to drive in. So what do you do in a situation like this? Well you hit the gas again. You know that there’s a lot of snow under the car and the last thing that you want to do is to get stuck. Whew! Finally made it to town and ran in to her business to sign the papers. I left the car running and I was out in a matter of minutes. Now to see how the roads were going home. I wasn’t expecting it to be good, but it wasn’t so bad heading south. I don’t know if the wind died down for the short time or what, but who cares I made it home.

Our snow pile continues to grow and grow!

Our snow in the yard continues to grow and grow!

I fed the Scarlet tonight and when I went in the barn the faithful chicken was still sitting in the rafters. We should really catch her before Reno does!DSC_0010

Seriously?

By now you probably have caught on that the weather around here is cold. But this morning it really was cold. I went out to start the car and she did growl a little, but then it was early and sometimes I feel like I could growl too! Then I ran back into the house to finish getting dressed. But as I’m walking out the front door to leave I noticed that my shoes kind of stuck to the front porch. I thought how weird is that? But I didn’t think much more about it and I ran to the car to get to work. Later I realized that my boots were warm and once they hit the cement they froze. As I left the driveway the car was still making some creaking noises. Then I looked down at the dash and saw what the temperature was. Seriously? It started out as -28 degrees and it kept going down as I was getting closer to work. When I finally got to work this is what I saw for air temperature. Not wind chill, but air temperature! 20140211_064621_resized Yea. This is not a good thing at all. But the weather is supposed to turn warmer and it sure won’t come too soon!

Kyle’s been doing the chores both in the morning and night. It’s been so nice with Daryl gone that I don’t have to worry about the chores. Kyle probably doesn’t remember feeding calves when he was so young, but we did have a lot of them when we were milking cows. I dug out a couple of the pictures when he was little and always in the calf pen. Check them out

When Kyle was little he always hung out in the calf pen

When Kyle was little he always hung out in the calf pen

When we milked cows we always had a lot of little calves around.

When we milked cows we always had a lot of little calves around.

Other than that I’ve had to find a couple more numbers for our tax’s. We met with the person who does our taxes yesterday and it didn’t turn out too bad. It’s always stressful when your’e going into the appointment and you try to act calm and like it’s no big deal. But inside? Holy smokes… you’re just holding your breath!

Daryl quick put up the new shelf in the Craft Room before he left earlier this week. He had the worst time trying to get the screws into the wall! Now our downstairs was all remodeled with new sheet rock on the walls. But the upstairs still has the old plaster and lathes. We found out when we remodeled that the lathes were hand cut out of oak and when Daryl was trying to put the shelf up – he must have found some of that hard oak! With the drill in one hand and the screw in the other, he couldn’t even start it in the wall!! Now you would think with the original walls still upstairs and our house around 120 years old that they wouldn’t be so tough right? Well, finally after a couple of tries he was able to get the shelf up. For now I have ribbon on it, but I feel that this shelf will never .. ever fall down and I’m wasting it by putting light things on it. I’m sure that I’ll change it around more than once until I find out what I really want on it. DSCN7959I also put up a new organizer for bills in the room. Kinda cool isn’t it? Well that is if you like the 1950’s 🙂DSCN7962

Kind of stubborn

Even though Miss Scarlet is about the prettiest calf in all the county, she might also be about the most stubborn.

It’s about time for her to try to drink out of a pail and we are having absolutely no success. Well that might not be such a true statement. If you call having her drink a bottle in less that a minute and then out of a pail in about 20 minutes  a success, then I guess I might be wrong. But she sure doesn’t like the change at all! She’s so tame when she sees you come near her she’ll run up because she thinks she’s going to get fed. Then when she sees the pail she’ll just walk all the way around you and start slamming her head into you. It’s kind of like when your kids were in church and they wanted down. You knew that no matter what they did they were not going to be put down! Well one head butt to the chin and you caved. Well, it’s kind of the same way with Scarlet.

Scarlet isn't liking this change one bit!

Scarlet isn’t liking this change one bit!

She just wants to drink out of the bottle and that’s that! So Daryl tried it one more time tonight and because he’s going to be out of town for the rest of the week, Kyle and I decided that going back to the bottle for Scarlet for a couple of days isn’t the worst thing in the world. I mean she’s still just a baby. A very strong baby, but a baby none the less!

Now everyone is happy again

Now everyone is happy again

Omelet breakfasts and working on organizing

We decided this morning to head over to an omelet breakfast that our local Catholic school was putting on as a fund raiser. Not only having someone cook you an omelet for breakfast sounds like a great idea, but it’s also going to a good cause.

Then after a breakfast of omelets and cinnamon rolls, off to town we went to get some groceries. I took a turkey breast out of the freezer to thaw for Monday night, but it sure seems like I can get in kind of a slump when it’s time to plan for meals. So I was hoping to be inspired today while I was walking down the aisles. I also decided to start clipping coupons again. I was really faithful with it about a year ago and then I fell off the wagon. I seem to spend more time organizing them just to throw them in the recycle bin lately. At the store I wanted to buy some things for the bathroom – toothpaste, antiperspirant, soap, you know stuff like that. There are always coupons for those things and I was able to fill my zippy bag full of them. I also wanted to pick up a couple of other things and it didn’t take long and I thought we were done. Then I remembered that I wanted some spray paint. Daryl hung out by the apples and off I went. I said that I’d be right back. When I came back with my spray paint Daryl looked really worried and asked what I was going to use ‘that’ color on. I should have said our kitchen chairs or something just to scare him, but I said that I wanted to paint my new shelf for the scrap book room. And since this room I can make as girly as I want, I decided that this color would work really well. See my walls are yellow and I think it’s going to look really good. I ended up taking the shelf down in the basement to spray it and holy cow it sure smells in the house. It’s got a pretty good chemical smell going on, even upstairs! I’m planning on putting the second coat on tomorrow morning before I leave for work. As long as the house smells, why stop now?

As for the rest of the day I worked on getting some pictures organized and also organizing Daryl’s folks’ things that his family still needs to go through. I had a chance to check out some of the things when I was putting them in the totes that I bought this morning and I came across some really old papers. The papers were from 1855 and in the 1860’s when his Mom’s family bought some land. We were talking about that tonight and Iowa became a state in 1846 and the Civil War was in 1861. So the papers were signed before the Civil War. How crazy is that?

And to end the night one of Kyle’s friends dropped him off after a bunch of kids got together for the weekend down in southern Iowa. He said that he couldn’t believe how many accidents that they saw on the highway yesterday morning when they were driving and even though it was snowing, we couldn’t understand why they would have seen so many. Then on the news tonight they said that there was a 30 car pile up on that highway. What?!!  I am so glad that we didn’t know that yesterday! I think I worry about the kids too much the way it is.

Oh well, we’re all getting ready for bed and tomorrow we’ll start the week all over again.

Saa.. weet!!

I found out about a garage sale yesterday at work that sounded pretty good. If I got my story right, there are a couple of sisters that go out and find treasures. They keep them in a barn until they have a bunch of stuff and then they have this garage sale. So I guess you can kind of call them Girl American Pickers.

So the alarm was set this morning and it had just started to snow, but I really wanted to go so I started the pickup and put my boots on. When I told Daryl that I needed to take the pickup this morning for a garage sale, he was wondering just what in the world did I want to buy? Well I knew that they had some old school lockers on it and I’ve been trying to buy lockers for at least 5 years now. I think they’d work good in the Roadhouse for the toys. So thinking how big the lockers are, I knew that I figured that I should be prepared.

This is an annual garage sale and it’s held in the Community Center in a town close to us. So when I pulled up with our pickup, there was about 10 cars with people waiting inside them just watching for the doors to open to the Center. Then it happened, people were starting to get out of their cars and the door was opened and they were ready for the sale. When I walked in the very first thing that I saw was the school lockers. I took the sign off and gave it to the people running the sale and said sold. Whew! Now to look around. My heart was just pounding just seeing all the cool old stuff that they had. But I knew that I wanted to be selective and after I swung my purse around to my back.. I went in to the crowd. It was AWESOME!! I ended up making a pile along the wall by the sales table and tried to keep a watch so no one would accidentally walk away with what I wanted. Now to my defense there was others who were making these same type of piles. But I did catch someone wanting to go through what not only my stuff but another ladies, so I tried to sound ‘nice’ and said that those are items that someone else was buying. I really wanted to say Back Off! After my first initial look around the room, I did walk around at least two more times in the hall to see if there was anything else that I just had to have. Then I checked out just what was on my pile and made the final decision if I should keep it or put it back. And guess how long this whole thing lasted? only about 30 minutes.  I ended up putting a couple of record albums back because they were scratched. But that was about it. Either I was careful on how much I was going to buy or I was selfish and didn’t want to put anything back. My vote would probably be the second one. I laughed when some lady asked if I was going to trap rabbits. Now I wasn’t sure why in the world she was asking that and then she pointed to the cage that I bought and said, ‘you know rabbit cage’. Well, I didn’t really know what in the world this was. I just knew that it looked pretty cool and I’m sure that I just had to have it.  I ended up only spending around $100 and came home with an old blanket from the 50’s, a very heavy old decorative mirror, a shelf for the craft room, 2 records for Daryl, 1 record for a friend, a Stop Sign for the Roadhouse, rabbit cage, an old milk can (I think?), a mission style wooden rocker, old Presidential pins for Kyle, and oh yea… 2 sweet lockers 🙂

Good thing that I had the truck this morning!

Since I was still all juiced up about the garage sale and my good luck when I got home, I sure got a lot done today. I worked on some laundry and cleaning and then this afternoon we were invited to our first wedding of the year. Below are the cards that I made for it. We needed to have one and so did Kyle. IMG_1314IMG_1317

Hockey Game

We have a local hockey team in our area and since we haven’t been to one of their games in a long time, it sure seemed like a good idea for tonight. The weather was cooperating so we hurried up after work to get ready and then we were off. We stopped at a local restaurant/bar for some sandwiches to hold us over until we get to the game. After all most hitting a deer on the way (which would not have been very cool at all!) we finally found a parking spot and headed into the hockey arena. The team that we were going to see were the Waterloo Black Hawks.IMG_1295IMG_1296

It seemed like there was a smaller crowd than what we’re used to seeing , but we think the reason was because there was a big concert in town that a lot of people were going to go to. And for us, it was Daryl, Kyle and myself. William couldn’t make it tonight. But we found our seats and it wasn’t long until the puck was flying – literally!IMG_1303 It landed a row in front of us when it flew out of the arena. I think those players are just awesome in how they can skate so fast and not just forwards but also backwards and I swear even sideways sometimes. I told Daryl that we needed to bring some of these guys to the roller skating rink and show the 8 year olds that adults really can skate. OK, back to the game, the Black Hawks ended up crushing their opponent and I found out later that by winning that game the Black Hawk Hockey Team beat the previous record for straight wins. The record is now 16th consecutive wins and is held by them.IMG_1298 IMG_1305After the game we went back to our car and it was really cold. Now it was only around 8 below at the time, but it was a very cold 8 below! And even though William couldn’t join us, it was a fun thing to do on a cold Friday night.

Trying to get organized

What is tonight’s activity? Well it’s to try to get organized in all of our paperwork. For some reason it seems like our paperwork just kind of grows and grows. Now it’s not really stuff that we have to keep, but I’ve been keeping it .. well…. just in case I need to refer back to them. Now that’s kind of dumb I think. I had quite a pile to go through to even start my task tonight. So the first thing that I did was to get some notebooks lined up. A friend of mine from work is probably the most, OK she IS the most organized person that I know and she is successful using notebooks. So that’s my 2014 plan. My first notebook has information on the community project that I’m helping with. This one was easy. I only went to two meetings so far 🙂 Then the second notebook has all my passwords in it and also my Mom’s computer passwords. This one wasn’t too bad, but was getting a little bit more complicated. The third one? Well that one had my ‘to do’ lists. I usually write them down on scrap pieces of paper and this way maybe it’ll help keep me motivated. The last one was the big one. This notebook has a working ledger of our expenses and other financial information in it. Now I know that it’s not going to be perfect, but I think it’ll help us to keep track of stuff better. I guess time will tell right? Now just to figure out where to keep all my notebooks.
