Lawler Irish Fest – Sunday

We had to get to church early to help with the breakfast that we were helping with. The breakfast was a waffle breakfast and even though they said that they had done one a long time ago in our church, I didn’t remember it. Maybe it was ‘before my time’. Like everything, there is always a set amount of people that you need to serve before you can break even. The number that we were shooting for was 300 and within the first hour, we knew that we served over that amount. Yea for us! Our shift was only for 2 hours and after we ate, we went home for a nap. There were some activities that went on during the day like a bean bag tournament and some ball games, but we decided that we really needed to get some stuff done around the farm. Daryl worked on cutting a patch of hay that he left the other day, and I ended up picking my Mom up and headed to town to get some groceries. Oh yea, I also dropped off some of the extra kohlrabies at my brother’s place. I’m thinking that he might be surprised on how many I had extra. I’m not sure just how many there was, but I’m guessing maybe 75? I’ve added two photos from yesterday from the Irish Fest. The first one is a picture of what used to be the Hardware store that was changed into a Photo Gallery for the festival. It worked out really well, and I think this building is just so beautiful!

Inside the Hardware Store

The second picture is one of our town’s water fountain. They had it repaired for the festival and it seemed like during the day that it was always busy. I had to wait my turn just to snap a picture of it. Even though there were a lot of kids getting a drink, there was also a lot of kids washing their feet after digging in the sand. But the reason that this fountain is so unique is that it has a people fountain on one side and then on the other side it’s for horses. Some of the people that we talked to this weekend said that they remember riding their horses into town and stopping to let them get a drink of water. Daryl tells the story of one of his friends riding Tiny his horse into town for ball practice and he always stopped to let Tiny get a drink before heading home.

Now that the big weekend is over for our town and going forward it’s just going to be a conversation, I can’t help think what a great conversation it’ll be.

Lawer Irish Fest – Saturday

Today was filled with parades, food, and a lot of hanging out and visiting with friends.

It was so overcast this morning and with the crazy weather that we’ve been having, everyone was worried about having the parade getting rained out. But the weather couldn’t have been any better or more perfect! It was overcast and I’m not kidding, some people actually had jackets on. It was supposed to get to 90 degrees today, and it sure wasn’t feeling it this morning. But that’s OK right? No one wants to sit in the scorching hot weather to watch a parade. So like I said, it was perfect! The one thing also about the parade that made it pretty cool was that we know the couple that bought Daryl’s parents house and since we knew from previous parades that it’s a good spot to sit, they said that they would keep a spot for us for our lawn chairs for the parade at their house.

Watching the parade from where Daryl's parents lived

Watching the parade from where Daryl’s parents lived

Now I’m not normally a big parade person, but this is my second parade that I went to in the last 2 weeks. That has to be some kind of record for me or something. But the parade was just tons of fun. It’s always a good time when you know 99% (or higher) of all the people who were in the parade. The entries were anything from family businesses, to

Daryl's brother and sister in law's float

fire trucks, dancers, old tractors, to even the log cabin that drove by the other day. DSCN6783aAnd just at the end of the parade, the sun came out and it really started to warm up. We went downtown after to watch my niece dance and also to  just hang out for the day. They really had a great crowd and the weather was holding out without any rain.

The one thing that I’ve never seen before was that when they were getting the kids games set up, they were working on the sand dig. Now this is where the kids dig in the sand for money. But this time what they did was to take a real cement truck and literally dump in the money. Then they used the truck to mix it up. That is just too funny! But the kids loved it and had a great time!

William and a bunch of his friends were in charge of driving the golf carts around to bring people to their cars or to the other parts of the town. We even heard later that they were giving tours of the town, which was a really good idea. And as the music was playing in the big tent and everyone was just sitting around visiting, I just couldn’t help to think just how successful this whole project was for the town. The committee started to meet in the beginning of the year and met weekly. And you could really tell that they thought of just about everything!  Like most of the towns around our area, it at one time was a pretty big town with tons of stores and movie theaters. But as the years went by, the amount of businesses and residents changed. So it was really pretty cool to see it so alive this weekend. We were planning on heading home early in the afternoon, but you know how that goes, we ran into Daryl’s Aunt and Uncle who we haven’t seen for some time. We had a  cold drink and a really nice visit with them and then home we went to take another shower. We had tickets for the Lions Chicken Supper and we knew that it was going to be busy. They had enough chicken for 1200 meals, and that’s a lot of people all wanting to eat supper. When we got to town the supper line wasn’t too long and it didn’t take too long for them to plate up our food. Now I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking this looked like a lot of food for one person and I think the cost was $7.20130622_185812_resized (2) As the night went on, we really had a good time talking with friends that we haven’t seen for some time, listening to the band, and just hanging out. The weather was really good for our town during the day, but within 4 miles going both north and south of our town, they got rain. One town that is around 50 miles from Lawler got 8 inches of rain! Wouldn’t that have been a mess.  They said that the storm split when it got close. Some of the local town people said that it was the ‘Luck of the Irish’ (they were Irish of course). The night ended with a best kilt and legs contest. There were over 10 entries and the contestants were really good sports.20130622_214516_resized (2) When we finally found ourselves heading home, we were tired. Now we really shouldn’t have been, but it was a big day for our town and it was also a really fun day!

Lawler Irish Festival – Friday & the 5K

You knew that this probably wasn’t going to be your ordinary day when you look out and see a log cabin house going down the road. It was our neighbors that they made for the parade tomorrow for Lawler’s Irish Festival,  and they were bringing it into town this afternoon before the town was too full with cars. DSCN6776Tonight was the night that our town had it’s first Irish Fest and it began with the 5K.  A lot of my family was going to run tonight in the race, but you know how it goes – stuff came up and all that.. and the ones who actually went into the race was only about half of what we were planning a couple of weeks ago. But it’s their loss and we knew that we were going to have a good time!

Looking good!

Looking good!

The weather was hot and it looked like it could storm, but as the starting of the race came closer, there were way more that the 120 people that they thought that might join in. I heard unofficially that there might have even been more around the 260 to 280 amount. Whatever the count was, everyone was ready to have a good time. Now since this was my second time running, I kind of felt a little bit more comfortable with the whole thing. William was also running and he said that he’d go with me, but he hooked up with some of his friends and I said that I’d be fine. Since last week, I bought a little IPod to use and I’m thinking this way I couldn’t hear myself breathing so hard. Also it should keep me on a pace. Well, anyway that’s my theory. I was so worried about getting it set, that I hardly heard the National Anthem when it was being sung. But soon we were off. OK, I felt pretty good and I set the little IPod timer for 30 minutes. My goal was to be at 29 ish minutes. Things were going OK and every so often the IPod would stop playing music and tell you just how fast you were running and how far. OK, cool right? I was running at a 9 minute mile and things were good. Well, for awhile. Then it slowed down and I thought to myself to  just keep running. It was a little disconcerting when the pregnant girl passed us, but we were determined not to the let the mom with the baby stroller get by! As the last mile was getting closer the voice on my IPod said 5 minutes left. OK, I knew that I could do this. I tried to pick up the pace and then I heard 4 minutes. OK. Then she came on and said 3 minutes. At this time I just thought to myself, ‘how do I shut this stupid IPod off!’ And even though I really didn’t have too far to go to the end of the race and I could even see it, but I ran out of gas. As I was running to the end all I could see were tons of people on the street and I thought to myself, if all these people were done already? But they were just friends and spectators just watching the race. Whew, that’s good. My time was 32:04. Well, not 29 is it. After a quick shower to get cleaned up, we went back into town to see the band for the night and also to check out what was going on. I’m thinking Saturday was going to be a fun and very full day!20130621_210530_resized (2)

Starting to plant the garden & the 5K

Finally tonight William and I were able to get into the garden and planted some of the plants that have been living in the greenhouse for around 3 months. Now I know that I’ve got a lot of some of the plants, and we tried really hard not to plant all of them. So for now the one things that are planted are tomatoes, kohlrabies (TONS left to plant), peppers, and onions (also TONS left to plant). But it was good to get it started even thought it’s not all done. I also picked up some bird netting from the farm store tonight when I was in town. When I went into the store there was a new guy helping me and when I asked for bird netting he said if that’s what it was called? So when I told him that you put it over your stuff in the garden so the birds don’t get to it,  he said he never heard of such a thing. Then while we were walking up to the cash register, he pulled out some netting from one of those aisle displays and I said that it was perfect! That’s what I was looking for.  After he rolled his eyes at me, he said that it’s called a produce netting for birds. Now I did not have the best day today, and I’m wondering to myself if this guy really want’s to go at it with me? But I just smiled and said .. OK, and took it to the counter and paid for it. The reason that I needed it was because Lucky the peacock is thinking that the strawberry patch is some kind of a fruit smorgasbord and is eating the strawberries as soon as they get close to getting ripe. But for now, the garden is tilled and some plants are in, and I’m feeling pretty good about it all.

After spending time in the garden, I worked on putting a whole lot of mulch down in some of the flower beds, I realized that I’m going to need about twice as much again of the mulch before I’ll be done. And I know that I should probably weed the areas first before I lay the mulch down, but what the heck. My plan is the put the mulch down and then use Round up if any of the weeds come through. That just sounds like a great plan to me.

And finally I wanted to go on a run tonight to get ready for our towns 5K tomorrow night. But after I looked at our gravel roads, I realized that going both east and west from our farm has brand new gravel on it and I didn’t want to roll my ankle before tomorrow. To be honest I didn’t want to ever roll my ankle. So after a soaking bath, I found a glass of wine, some beef jerky, and some Ruffles – Sour Cream and Onion,  and I am going to call it a night. I’m pretty sure that it’s not the supper of ‘Champions’ but since it’s around 9:30 pm and it’s the easiest, it’s what I’m calling supper tonight.

Busy Day

The alarm went off at 2 and honestly I was already awake. I don’t think I even slept because I kept going over in my head what Kyle should pack and bring with him. He has to pack for the next 6 months living in New York. I don’t know about you, but that’s quite an task for one suitcase. He usually gets it done and this time was the same. After we all got dressed, said good-bye to William,  and the car packed, off to Minneapolis airport we went. We made good time and we were on our guard watching for deer. This was prime time for deer running out in front of you on the road. By the time we got to the airport, we were tired. All of us and especially Kyle. I know now that he never slept last night at all. He tried to sleep in the car while we drove  to the airport, but it wasn’t the most comfortable and it really didn’t work so well. But it didn’t take long for him to get his boarding pass once we got to the airpot, and soon he was standing in the line for security check. As we walked away, it’s always kind of a weird feeling knowing that you will not see someone for 6 months. But it’s an exciting time for him and it’ll be such an adventure that I’m sure it’ll turn out just fine. I’ve come to realize that I’m not as emotional leaving Kyle or William at the airport as I am when we go and get them. Whew! That’s good

A very tired Kyle heading back to New York

So when Daryl and I got home we both took a well deserved nap. 7 hours driving with little or no sleep, makes anyone tired. I finally got up after around 2 hours and started to work on the garden. YIKES! Now when I’m saying it’s bad, it’s bad. I finally threw away the hoe and went to get the sand shovel to dig the weeds out of it. This wasn’t working the best and I had more sweat running off my face than a garden hose. So forget this process and I called my favorite hardware store to see if they had a tiller we could rent. SCORE! They did have a really big one and it wasn’t long until Daryl was heading off to town to pick it up. Now it’s kind of expensive to rent, but this shouldn’t take long right? Yea, not so right. I ended up clogging it up so bad that it just died. When I looked under the ‘hood’, you could see all the tall weeds and mud caked up in it. Daryl said that maybe we should have mowed the garden before we tilled it. I gave him a .. hahaha look, but honestly he’s probably right. Maybe then it wouldn’t have jammed it up so bad. But using a tire iron, we got her cleaned out and I was back in business. (I was really glad that it started!)  It was really hot in the garden and I can’t believe that it was still so muddy. But I knew that I had to break the top layer to get it to dry out. I also was not going to give up. My face was full of dirt and sweat and if the world ended tonight, I was going to have that garden tilled no matter what! I’m pretty sure I had one of those intense looks on my face, because for awhile I could even feel it. And intense might just be a nice way of saying, kinda crazy looks. Finally I called it and asked Daryl if he would return it back to town. I knew that this garden wasn’t going to be perfect, but that was OK. I started to mow and Daryl finished up replanting some corn that needed it out in the field. Once William got home from work and Daryl was done in the field, he started to clean up the planter. When was he started to clean and vacuum the planter out,  he had a lot of help from the chickens on the grain that fell. It looked kind of funny having all the chickens by his feet. Then the next thing was to work on getting some of the machinery back in the shed.IMG_0401IMG_0399 Next was to back it into the machine shed. We laughed because we were talking that when the machine shed was built, who would have thought that it might not be tall enough for our machinery. But with William on one side of the planter and me on the other, we had helped Daryl get it backed into the machine shed with inches to spare in the door opening. Another year done, and what a year of planting it was! IMG_0402

Kyle is heading back to New York

I read awhile ago that as you get older, your release more of this one chemical in your brain that literally makes you feel like time goes faster. OK, so let’s just say that’s true. Then why in the world wouldn’t they create a new chemical to slow things down. Am I right? Well the reason that I’m saying this is because Kyle was planning on flying out Wed morning early and that time with him home went by so fast. So we hurried with our night chores and got everything lined up and then we usually begin and end a visit from the boys with a ‘friendly’ card game, and this trip was the same. So we sat down at the kitchen table and the taunting began. We usually play Daryl and I against the boys,  and the verdict is still out if we really won the last time we played. But as the hands were being dealt and the score was only one or two points difference all the time – the boys won. Yea, I have to say it, but in our defense.. they only won by one! So after the game we tried to get to bed tonight somewhat early because we were leaving at 2:30 am for the airport. I’m not sure when Daryl got to bed, and I’m not sure if Kyle actually ever went to bed, but I crawled into bed around 11:30. I’m sure the alarm will be loud at 2 am!

In the field

Now I don’t know why eating any meal in the field tastes so much better, but take my word for it… it does. It could be something as simple as a sandwich and you would swear that it came from the finest deli around. Tonight’s supper wasn’t any extravagant, but it did have something hot in it and also some fresh watermelon, and Daryl said that it was good.

Eating supper in the field

Eating supper in the field always tastes so good for some reason

The reason that I had to bring supper out in the field was because Daryl actually was able to get into the remaining acres and get the beans planted. YEA! He worked up the other ground that flooded the corn, and wants to replant these spots, but at least for now he got this area done.

Finishing the beans tonight

And he didn’t even get stuck! He took the log chain with him and we were on call just in case. I’m sure glad that he didn’t need us to pull him out. When he got home, we took the rest of the beans out of the planter, and for now we just put them in sacks in the barn. We’ll want to store them better for the next years crop, and we’ll probably put them in plastic totes again so the mice don’t get into them for the winter. It’s too expensive to have any of it go to waste. After I dropped supper off for Daryl, I went through town to see some of the displays that they’ve put up for the Irish Fest this weekend. But as I’m driving into town, I noticed that the roads were really wet. At first I thought that it must have rained or something in town, but then I realized that they had the fire truck out on Main Street cleaning up the street after the flood that we had the last couple of weeks ago and to also to make it nice for the festivities this weekend.

When I got home, I gave the watermelon rind that I cut up for Daryl in the filed to the chickens. Our chickens will eat just about anything, and they especially love watermelon.

The first watermelon of the season for the chickens

How we ended up the night was a bonfire. One of our neighbors stopped in when he saw us outside, and we sure had a nice visit. It seems like with the weather nice and warm and the farmers getting into the fields, it just makes everyone feel so much better.

Good weather and Father’s Day

What good weather we had today. It didn’t rain, and it really didn’t even LOOK like it was going to rain. I mean, go figure! So it was a perfect day to finish the porch to seal it up. I needed to go to town to get some old newspapers copied off for the Irish Fest that’s happening in our town next weekend, and the only place that I could find that could do it was an hour away. But my luck is that they can copy these over sized newspapers and that they are open on Sunday. I was really happy how the copies turned out and especially on the 1875 newspaper that I have from our town. This one is a little bit more fragile than the others, and what they did was scan each side of the paper twice and then digitally piece them together on the computer. Now I know that sometimes we might think that we’ve got too much technology in the world, but today.. Shazam! I was really happy that it turned out,  and even happier that it cost less than half of what I expected to pay! When I got home from getting these copies, Daryl was just putting the second coat of sealant on the porch and it really looks nice. The only trouble that he was having was with the peacocks. Now it wasn’t because Sam was screaming at him in the yard like he did with William yesterday, but the trouble was with Lucky wanting to get on the porch and look into our living room by the French Doors. Lucky always thinks he kind of owns the porch and also he also thinks that he can also use it to just go to the bathroom anytime he wants. Yea, you can just about imagine how well THAT went over after the second day of this project. But later on in the day, William finally caught Lucky and I think it scared the peacock so much that we didn’t see him for the rest of the day by the house.

Lucky didn't like this at all!

Lucky didn’t like this at all!

Since we were having such nice weather, Daryl went over to the other farm to see how the fields were looking. The temperature was around 80 degrees today, and it really helped to start to dry up the ground. Now don’t get me wrong, they are no way near being dry, but at least it’s a start. He was able to work up most of the one field that he still needs to plant and was pretty happy about that. So after supper we talked about if we should go out and pick rock. We for sure didn’t want to get stuck out in the field, but these past four weeks with Kyle home, our plan is to have him help to get the fields all picked. And how many did we get done? Zero. Well, Daryl went over to get the planter out, and then we were going to see. After he got the planter out of the shed, he said he thought that now he knew for sure that it’s been too long since he used it last last because there were two bird nests built on top of the guide arm! Seriously, not cool. The guys knocked them off before I could get a picture of them, but I snapped a couple after they were off. DSCN6768 DSCN6767The boys helped get the planter ready for hopefully tomorrow afternoon and the tractor and planter is just sitting in the yard waiting to go. I’m thinking that our farm equipment isn’t the only one that is just sitting in a farm yard tonight waiting to get into the field tomorrow. I’m sure that most of all the farmers were planning the same thing. We ended up picking rock later tonight and even though we didn’t get all the rock cleaned up in this field, at least we got hopefully most of them out. There were areas that we couldn’t drive in because it was too wet, but with the ground worked up and good weather forecast for tomorrow, it should dry pretty good. I laughed though at the end of the day because I saw on Facebook people were enjoying the nice weather at the river, or camping, some were on motorcycle rides, or having picnics. But after I looked at the picture I took of how our family spent Father’s Day, it was just as nice. Not necessarily the rock picking stuff, but just spending the afternoon helping to get the fields ready for the crops. I guess the old farmers saying is true, ‘If the sun is shining, you better make hay’. But this year, ‘If the sun is shining, you better be picking rock!’

Working on the porch Saturday

The fields were too wet for Daryl to get out in them, and with the next couple of weekends busy, we knew that we’d better get some things checked off our list. Now a lot of the things on our list involves field work, but it looks like we need some nicer weather before we could do anything like that. So today’s project was to work on the front porch. Every year you really want to seal it at least once, and you should probably seal it almost twice. But last year after graduation, we just kind of stopped doing any projects and never got it sealed. The first step is to strip the old sealer off. So we wanted to see if our power washer would work, and no luck on that. After a quick call to the favorite hardware store to see if we could rent their power washer and nozzles, we were in luck! No one was using them this weekend, and off Daryl and William went to get it. In the mean time, Kyle kept working on cleaning the cement until they came back.DSCN6744It took most of the afternoon to get the cement stripped, and despite the weather that was trying to really rain on everyone, the porch was ready to get a new sealant on it. Hopefully tomorrow the sun will shine and it’ll be a good day to apply the sealer. DSCN6752 The only one who wasn’t liking the whole process was Sam the Peacock. He just stood across the yard on the calf shed and screamed and screamed! OK, so the power washer is a little loud, but Wow he really hated it.

Keeping a good watch on just what was making all the noise. And I think it was Sam!

Keeping a good watch on just what was making all the noise. And I think it was Sam!

While the guys were working on the porch, William picked up the weed eater from town on Friday that was getting fixed,  and I wanted to try it out. I’m not sure, but I think there was something wrong with the carburetor or something… but whatever the problem was, it didn’t stay running very good in the past. But now? One pull and she’s purring. So when the guys were washing the porch in the light rain that we were having, I was having a pretty good time with the weed eater cleaning up around the buildings. At the end of the day, we felt that we had gotten pretty much what we wanted to get accomplished.

Congratulations to ..ME!

Well I finally did it! I ran my first 5K yesterday. YEA for me! It was called the Brat & Brew in a local town, and it’s their third year of doing this run. After you do the run what happens is that you get a bratwurst and a beer for finishing. Daryl said that it was a lot of work just for a beer and a sandwich, but I know that he was just teasing me. Our town’s 5K run next week, and Kyle has to leave on Wednesday so he won’t be able to join William and I in that race. And since Kyle enjoys running, we went and did this one while he was still home. I have to admit that I was pretty anxious about the whole thing. I mean, for someone who really never ran until about 2 weeks ago, there is a lot to be nervous about right? And to top it off, I’ve never ran the whole 3.1 miles before. I’ve ran 3 miles twice, so I figured it should be OK. I didn’t want to tell too many people just in case it wasn’t going to go very good. So after work, I came home and was trying to figure out just what to wear. Now I’m sure that anything would be OK, but I wanted to blend in and try to seem like I knew what I was doing. I finally found my SPAM museum shirt and some shorts, and then I was set. Next, I added some  makeup so I would look somewhat put together and then my shoes went on. I was ready to go and realized that it was only 5:00. Yea, the race started at 7! Do you think I was just a little anxious? So I kind of hovered around the house and made a quick sandwich to eat. Finally it was time to leave and with William wishing us luck, Kyle and I headed to town. When we registered I told myself that we really didn’t need the shirt that you get, but we thought that the shirts were pretty cool and ended up buying one for each of us. I mean, I needed some kind of trophy right? So now it’s getting closer to the starting time and also the anticipation is growing. What do I do next? Oh my gosh, bathroom break! Yea, too much water from 5 to 7 pm I think. The boys are always after me to keep hydrated and drink more water and I might have overdone it a little.  As we were listening to the National Anthem being sung, I stood there with I’m sure a scared to death look on my face, and I couldn’t also help to think how kind of crazy this all was. I mean, when can you get around 400 people to pay $20 to run around a town for a sandwich and a beer right? I wasn’t sure how everyone gets lined up and the boys said that people line up in a 5K on how you want to run the race. The serious runners are in front, and as you go back to the line, the last people are the walkers. So we positioned ourselves somewhat towards the middle and waited for the firetruck to blow it’s horn to start the race. All of a sudden it went off and Kyle looked at me and smiled and said… ‘Let’s go!” OK we’re off. It started out pretty good and we were at a good pace, but after a couple of times going up and down some hills in town, I soon just found a pace that I thought that I wouldn’t die at. I also was sweating so bad that I thought just why in the heck did I even wear any makeup! My face gets so red and I always think I look like I just came from a lava pit or something but I kept chugging along.  Kyle gave me a lot of encouragement during the race and I was really greatfull that he was there with me for this first run. I said that he didn’t have to wait for me because I was a lot slower than him, but he said he wanted to run with me to help keep the pace. As we were getting to the end, I thought to myself.. Thank God! I tried to pick up the pace a little and I think I might have done it just a smidge. My goal was to finish the race in 30 minutes, but I ended up finishing it in under 34 minutes. 33 minutes and 54 seconds I think was the exact time. But guess what? I finished it. When I just went across the finish line and Kyle looked at me and gave me two high fives, I couldn’t help to feel proud that I did it and also how proud of both our boys for helping me. Now to get ready for next week. William and some of my family is running in that one. Humm..  I wonder what I should wear?

My first 5K!

Looking tough after my first 5K!
