Let the games begin

With the weather changing and a very high chance for frost tonight – it’s time to start to play the – ‘Should I cover the flowers or not’ game.

Now granted the flowers do look a little bit on the shabby side, but I think it must be that if you let the frost get them, that really means that summer is over. So last night, into the drawer I went. I keep all the sheets and stuff in this one huge drawer in the laundry room and out they all came. Then I went outside make the judgement on who will live and who will die. I only grabbed so many of the sheets and pillow cases that I have extra and who ever didn’t get covered, well ….

So last night before we were headed out for the night, I had to cover the stuff up before we left. I covered up the obvious ones – mums, the flowers in the big tubs, you know the easy ones. Then I started on what other ones should get covered. The potted ones by the house and the potted ones by the Roadhouse were an easy choice. By this time I also took what I could inside the house and I realized that I had used up all the sheets and cases that I had. But as I was walking out of the house to the car, I felt bad for the ones in front of the house that were only partially covered. OK, so back into the house I went and grabbed some towels to cover them all up. This whole game thing is just way too stressful!

Then this morning? Yup, you guessed it. I took all the covers off of them before too many people would see our yard. Trust me, it had a lot of sheets and towels in it. Then in the course of the day it started to rain. Now normally, who cares right? Well, unless you have all these sheets out there hanging over the fence. So outside I went to gather up all the stuff and bring it in the house.DSCN7397

Any now? Well, it’s still supposed to get cold tonight so I better get done with this post so I can get back outside. You guessed it, to cover the flowers again 🙂

Sometimes you just have to laugh

This morning the bin wasn’t working again and after Daryl crawled up in it before work, he realized that the belt was bad. His plan was to pick one up after work and then replace it. So after work he went to the parts store and bought two belts, one to replace the one he knew was bad and the one to have as a spare.  When I got home, I noticed that he was just climbing out of the bin and looking a little ‘goofy’. He had this grin on his face and it didn’t take too long to figure out what he was laughing about. He knew that the belt that he replaced was bad, but not until he actually took it off and replaced it did he know just how bad. Check it out

It looks like this belt had seen better days!

It looks like this belt had seen better days!

Well, the bin is full and running good now, so we’re getting cleaned up to hopefully check out some Halloween haunted houses tonight. Sounds like fun!

Shelling corn continues

Daryl was having some trouble with his combine last night, but tonight he was in the fields again. He wanted to get the bin filled as long as he had the heat going on inside of it. After 3 loads shelled tonight after work, he was able to start unloading the loads into the bin and that should fill it. It’ll be another late night for him, but he’s happy that he got done what he did. I was watching the gravity box with corn unload into the auger tonight when he had to run into town quick tonight before the gas station closed,  and I’ve never noticed the bin sweat before. He said that it happens when the corn is starting to heat up and the moisture is coming out of it. It makes sense doesn’t it, but I guess I never paid that much attention to it before.

The water is running down the outside of the bin tonight

As for me tonight, well I wasn’t very successful in getting much done. I’m hoping that I’ll have more luck tomorrow night after work. I was checking out the garden while I was watching the bin tonight, and decided that I should really try to get that cleaned up before winter really comes and sets all the weed seeds into the ground for next spring. But I’m positive that it’s not going to be a fun job cleaning the garden out at all!

Getting the mail & meeting new people

You know how sometimes when you get the mail it’s really not even worth the effort going to the mail box? Well today was definitely not one of those days! When I first looked into the mailbox I thought what in the world is that? The mailbox was full with magazines, newspapers, and then a box.  At first I figured it was just something for William. He’s always buying stuff off the internet and I just figured that this is what it was. But as I grabbed the mail, I realized that it was a package for Daryl. Then when I saw the box I knew it was from his cousins in California who raise pistachios. Now this is a good thing to find in the mail box!DSCN7382 They’ve sent their pistachios before and they were just awesome. And by the look on Daryl’s face when he was taste testing them tonight – they were as good or even better than before. We’re trying to figure out what we can send these guys from Iowa, but we haven’t come up with the best idea yet. We’ll know it when we see it I’m sure. I have it on my bucket list to someday go out and help them harvest their crop. It sounds like it’s a lot of work, but I think it would be so interesting and just plain cool.

This week I also did something that I haven’t done before. I am on Facebook and belong to what seems like tons of groups that are like huge garage sales but an electronic version. What I saw the other day for sale on one of these groups was a wash tub and stand. And guess what? I bought it. I didn’t know anything about the seller, but I didn’t care because she was from a town only a couple of miles away and I’ve been looking for a wash tub and stand for sometime now. I want to use it in the Roadhouse for a pop/beer cooler and I’m thinking it’ll be just perfect. So I did some errands in town tonight and then I headed over to this persons house. I didn’t know what to expect so I just told myself that it will be fun and an adventure. And what an adventure! Have you ever started to talk to someone and immediately know that you like the person? Well that was me tonight. This girl I swear liked absolutely everything that I did. When I first got there we talked about barns and corn cribs for almost 30 minutes. Yea, someone else that actually likes barns and corn cribs as much as me… can you believe it? Well I was trying to act cool about the whole thing and not creep her out or anything, but when she said how much she liked windmills, I almost died. She was working on putting up some of the old blades on her building. We started to talk about the wash tub that she had for sale and I mentioned that I really like the old stuff from the 50’s. I also said that I had just bought an old galvanized wash bucket the other day and guess what she said? That she also had one. Now that’s kind of scary isn’t it? How many people actually have one of these? At the end of the conversation, we loaded up the wash tub into the Pacifica and she was going to look around to see if she had any ‘treasures’ for sale and let me know if she found any. I’m thinking Jackpot!

My new wash tub. For now it's the new home for our socks :)

And to end the day, we had some mouse traps out in the Roadhouse and when I checked them tonight – we caught the littlest mouse. It all started when I was mowing the last week, and out of nowhere a really little mouse ran in front of the mower. You know when you first look at something and think how cute it is and honestly he really wasn’t hurting anyone.  He seriously was about 2 inches long and really fast. Then when he realized that I was there he took off running and was heading for the Roadhouse. What!! Stupid mouse!! So I took off with the push mower (yea, I know it’s not a good thing… ) to try to catch him. I found out quick that if there was ever a push lawn mower race that I was in, I would not ever win it. The mouse got way out in front of me and once he got to the cement, he knew that he wasn’t going to get caught and he found a spot by the overhead door and into the Roadhouse he went.  So after buying some of those glue mouse traps, we put them all over in the Roadhouse to see if we could catch him, and it didn’t take long. At first I kind of felt bad for the little guy when I saw him all stuck to the glue, but that feeling didn’t last long at all. Now he’s in the faithful cremation container, (aka the fire barrel), and that’s the end of that.

Back to reality – Monday

Sunday the weather was absolutely perfect! Little wind and the weather temperature I think was around in the 70’s. So with the good weather, also comes farmers in the field. And that’s exactly where Daryl was. He’s trying to get most of his crops out in these next couple of weeks, so that means any good weather, you’ll find him driving some kind of vehicle in the field. But then, you’ll see a lot of farmers in the fields these days. They usually get worried if it starts to rain or gets really windy and blows the corn down, it’s so much easier to get it out of the fields now. So while he was shelling corn, I spent most of the day just putsing around the house and farm. I did get quite a bit of stuff done, and I even got a good run in later in the afternoon. I haven’t been running as often as I would like (or should!) and I could really tell. I put some laundry on the line and cleaned up a little in the Road House. They were talking possibly rain tonight, but it was late when I realized that I should take the laundry off the line –  so I left it there for tomorrow.

Today was back to work and it sure felt like a Monday. I laughed when I got home from work and was in the kitchen. When William was home this past weekend, he said that both Reno the dog and Little Kitty were spoiled. So while I was in the kitchen tonight, Little Kitty was trying to figure out why he wasn’t in there with me. OK, maybe he’s a little spoiled.

Now honestly, how can you say no to this?

Now honestly, how can you say no to this?

Then later on while I was sitting on the couch, Reno was more than anxious to get my attention and ended up sitting on the cat so he wouldn’t get in the way or any more attention. Now that’s pretty funny!

Little Kitty did get out some before I could snap a picture
Little Kitty did get out some before I could snap a picture

And speaking of Reno, while  I was talking to my sister tonight, I ended up yelling at the dog. The reason was because she was eating the cats food. But to be fair to her,  the outside cats eat the dog’s food, the chickens eat the cows corn, the cows eat the apples, the Peacocks eat the cat’s food, and the cat? Well he eats bacon. 🙂

After work,  Daryl headed out in the field again to work on the crops, and I decided that I better bring in the laundry that I hung out yesterday. But with it being windy on the farm again today, it took out my close line! Daryl said that it wasn’t going to be too hard to fix and he just needed to put in a pipe or something. Yea, another reason to hate wind! My list just grows and grows on that subject!

Not cool at all.

Not cool at all. Also check out how many apples are again on the ground. Yikes!

So as I’m typing this upstairs in the Craft Room,  I can hear Daryl outside just finishing up unloading corn in the bin. The auger just shut off and at first I’m thinking that he’s going to call it a night. But now I can hear the tractor and wagon pulling out of our driveway and I guess it looks like another late night for him. As for me? I made a different batch of breakfast bars that I just took out of the oven and the house smells wonderful. The dog is laying on the living room floor downstairs and Little Kitty is on the blanket on the couch. All in all it’s a pretty cozy Autumn day at the farm.

Blessings

You know the feeling when you’re sitting somewhere and you feel that everything is right with the world? Well, that’s what happened to me on Saturday.

William came home Friday night so we could get to Madison, Wisconsin for a Baptism that he was going to be a Godfather for. Can you believe William is that old already? (OK, William getting older wasn’t the good feeling part) But as I was sitting in the pew in the church looking around at the family of the little boy that was getting baptized,  I thought how totally cool it was to be able to be there and share this day with them. Daryl and I met this family on the day that Kyle was born, 27 years ago. I was in the hospital laying in bed and I could see that there were two people behind the curtain wanting to come in the room to see him. One was the Mom, and the other was her daughter. And to be honest, I really didn’t know that many people in the area at that time, and it didn’t register who these two smiley girls were. But they came into the room and were ‘Officially’ our first new family guest. This family, along with their kids, would soon be the boy’s extended family. They would help babysit them throughout the years and would become our lifelong friends. So like I said, I was sitting in church just looking around and I thought how funny things turn out isn’t it? I mean, two strangers to me while I was in the hospital, and now our families feel like we are just one.

So now William is a Godfather. The baby wore a 5th generation baptismal gown from the 1800’s that was covered in hair pin lace. I never knew that hair pin lace really meant that they used a hair pin to create the lace. It was absolutely stunning! During the service I was trying to watch William and not be too noticeable while doing it. William looked so grownup and handsome in his suit standing by the baptismal font. He is more than excited to be this little guy’s Godfather, and you could see how proud he was standing up by the family in front of church. I’m thinking that I probably had some proud smiles on my face also.

So as the family all gathered back at the house after the baptism, the house was full of talk and laughter. I thought to myself that there is a whole part of the baptism that is definitely a spiritual blessing, but there is also part of a baptism that is a family blessing. How lucky this new little family is to have both.

Wind makes me crabby

I hate wind. Now I’m sure there is a good use for it, but honestly I haven’t found it yet. Wind blows around everything in our yard and makes a mess! I found the top part of our flag over by the chicken coop tonight and the pillows off the front porch by the garage. The chairs are scattered, all my mums are tipped over,  and corn stalks are scattered in the front lawn from the fields. Wind makes me very crabby! OK, can you guess how I really feel about it?

On a positive note, I took a look at the yard by the front ditch today and it doesn’t even look too bad. I mowed it last night literally in the dark and I’m amazed on how it turned out. OK, that’s a good thing. Well, there’s one more good thing. William is home for the night and it’s always nice when he’s able to spend some time with Daryl and I. Maybe I’ll get rid of this headache and stop being so crabby. My only hope is that it for sure can’t be as windy tomorrow can it?

Getting exercise

I really wanted to go running tonight after work, but you know when you really want to do something.. and then there is the stuff that you should be doing? Well, the ‘should be doing’ stuff overruled, and I ended up mowing lawn tonight. Man was it a dusty night! Since we live so close to the road, and it’s harvest season, there was a lot of traffic going past our place tonight. At first I thought, well it’ll slow down – yea that didn’t happen. Then I thought, well the wind will die down and it won’t be so bad – yea that didn’t happen either. Daryl and I were trying to figure out just how many semi’s and other farm equipment went past our place in the 3 1/2 hours and we both agreed that at least 50 times someone went past our farm. And let me just tell you that this was a lot of road dirt flying at me when I was mowing. OK, so I was going to run and to be honest I was just a little bit worried about someone running me over when they were driving by, so mowing did make the most sense. So I thought, OK I’m only going to mow the ditches and the front lawn. No big deal, and then I can get cleaned up and be done with this. So I used the rider and mowed the one ditch and over by the windmill and the Roadhouse. Things were going good. Then I thought that I’d better start in front of the house. But did you ever have ‘one of those feelings’ ? Well I did. I thought, I wonder just how much gas I have left in the rider? Since we don’t have a gas barrel at the farm, this is an important question. Well, I looked and didn’t like what I saw. It was very much past the E on the gauge. So I drove back to the barn and got out the push mower. Now this is where the exercise comment comes in. The push hasn’t been started for sometime now and if you ever tried to start a push lawnmower that has sat outside in the last couple of rains and hasn’t been used for awhile, you’ll know what I”m talking about. Yea, not an easy job to get it started! I pulled a couple of times and then pushed the gas thing, and then pulled some more. I thought to myself pretty bad things and kept trying.  But eventually it started and off to the front of the house I went. My plan was to get the front lawn mowed and then mow the other ditch and do some trim work in the other ditch. OK, I got the front of the house done and it was looking pretty good. Then moving to the snake ditch. I’ve found so many snakes in this ditch this summer it’s crazy, but it was so stinking windy and getting late, I thought to myself.. I double dare any snake to come out tonight. It’ll for sure be their last. (pretty tough huh!) Well no snakes came out and I got the ditch mowed. Now I’m sure that the people driving by thought I was so snotty because I never looked up and waved to them. But honestly if I did that, I would have spent the whole night just waving by the road and not getting any mowing done. OK, now I moved over to the other ditch and was getting pretty tired of walking behind the mower. But I knew that it was my only choice and soon that ditch was also done. So as I was pushing the mower through the yard I saw the lawn by the road was  looking kind of sad and I remember thinking – just how long could this actually take?  Well, that was a dumb move. Because it took a very long time. It took so long that it was dark outside when I was mowing,  and I was just king of guessing where the rows were because I couldn’t see anymore. We have a requirement on our rider lawnmower that it has to have lights because I’m usually mowing late at night, but now I think that we’ll have this requirement on the push mower also. Then I thought that maybe I need one of those miner hats with a light on it. OK, maybe not. I looked way too unattractive the way it is to start with out there covered in dirt, that I better not add to it. So after all of this going on tonight, I decided that I got in a couple hours of walking behind the push mower and who in the world needs to go for a run when you can do this?

Farm noise

With working off the farm during the day, Daryl  has been unloading  the corn that he’s been combining at night. He’s been putting corn in the bin by our house, and with the shop not having the part in to fix  the combine, he had time to get the loads unloaded. DSCN7343Now I’m not sure why they couldn’t fix his combine, but this time of the year, you can find yourself just smiling and nodding a lot and maybe not paying as much attention to the conversation as you should be. Yea, pretty sure that was me in the combine bearing conversation. So Daryl has been putting corn in the bin by our house and because it was the first corn of the season, he was worried it might be still a little wet and didn’t want it to spoil. He had the fan on in the bin just to circulate the air, and tonight he turned on the gas to heat it up inside for a little bit. Now I know that I shouldn’t really like this noise because  when the fan or heat is on, you can see your electric or gas bill just going up and up. But I think there’s something relaxing about the noise. I really like laying in bed hearing the nose of the bin, and for me it’s a comforting sound. Yea, it’s weird I know. But it’s funny, when Daryl can sleep through just about anything, he can hear if the fan starts to sound funny outside in the yard with all the windows shut. He’ll lay there for a little bit and then get up and go check it out no matter what time of the night it is. But I think hearing the fan at night is kind of like when you have the laundry going in your house, there’s something just about it that is relaxing. But after the bin fan has been going for awhile now, he shut it off for tonight and everything seems so quite. It definitely seems like something is missing, and I’ll be anxious for it to start up soon again.

Hanging out in the corn fields

Daryl was able to get all the beans out that were dry, so he switched the bean head to the corn head on the combine and has been out to the corn field since.

Putting the corn head on the combine

Putting the corn head on the combine

A lot of farmers have been talking about the corn getting wrecked so bad this year by root worms, so we’re hoping that we only have a small patch down because of it and hopefully it won’t effect too much of the crops. When you have root worms in your fields, what happens is that the corn isn’t very stable in the ground and it just literally falls over. And then when you go and try to combine it, it really isn’t fun at all. Not only are you worried about picking up all the corn with the combine, but you have to sometimes combine the rows only one way. That means that you combine to the end of the field and then just drive back to the beginning again through the field and then combine the next row. It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does it’s not fun! It doubles the time to get the same amount of corn that you should have gotten in the first place.  So like I said Daryl’s hanging out in the corn field and didn’t want to stop to get anything to eat, so I called  to see if he wanted me to bring any supper out. He said that he was having some trouble with the combine and I said that I’d be right out. Now, I’m pretty sure that there isn’t much (or anything) that I really could do to help, but I thought I’d go and see what was wrong. It always scares me when he’s out in the field at night and then he says he’s working on the equipment.  But he figured out that a bearing was out and needed to take it into town to get fixed. Since it was dark and the highway that we were going to go on is always crazy busy, I followed him to town with the light’s flashing on the car. I don’t know for sure, but I think that there are a lot of ‘town’ people that probably don’t have any idea where the emergency lights are on a vehicle if they ever needed to use them. And for the farm kids, they pretty much grew up with someone along the line telling you to ‘follow me with your flashers on‘. So you had to learn quick on the vehicle that you were following just where the flashers (emergency lights) were because you never know when you’ll use  them to follow a load of rocks on a hay wagon or a combine at night.
