A breakthrough

We had a breakthrough tonight. Our little kitty, Pepper is a lot of work. She eats, screams, and then eats some more. Now I do like little kitties, but to be honest I’m kind of getting sick of having to feed this kitty all the time. We’ve tried to kind of starve her and then try to make her drink out of a little saucer, but absolutely no luck! She just wants to suck on your hand. So tonight – I thought there was no reason why this cat can’t drink out of the bottle by herself. So I propped up the bottle on a towel and Shazam! It worked. She’s a messy drinker by you feeding her or if she drank this way, and she insists on holding the bottle when she’s drinking.

This just isn't right is it?

This just isn’t right is it?

Her belly is like a tennis ball after she eats!

Other things that we’re working on is getting the lawn mowed. Even though I left some wheel marks from the lawn mower with all the rain last night, I mowed anyway. They are talking more rain this weekend and by then it’ll be way out of control. Kyle worked on getting the machine shed swept out from all the winter dirt and peacock feathers, and William is spending the days at his summer job. But don’t let it fool you. I’m not working all that hard this week. I took Tuesday evening and spent it with my golfing buddy. Not only did we go golfing (well kind of golfed – maybe only 5 or 6 holes) then we headed out to find some pizza in Lawler for supper. Tons of fun,  and I’m glad that even though we don’t work together anymore, that we still can get together to hang out at the golf course.

Dairy Days in Fredericksburg, Iowa

Dairy Days in Fredericksburg, Iowa was this week and this year it took on a whole new meaning for me. Now if you’re not familiar with this celebration, it’s been going on for the past 89 years and the town takes it very seriously. But if you’re a kid, it’s a couple days of carnival rides, cotton candy, and parades. Growing up, we weren’t from this town and we really never went to the Dairy Days, but when I was in high school .. this was the place to go. In those days without ‘Facebook’ or ‘Twitter’, the next best thing was to go to the local towns and just check out what was going on. It was always tons of fun and you always ended up meeting some one new. And then, after my girlfriends and I all got married, we stopped going. But this year because I’m working in this town, it has taken on a whole new meaning. The company that I work for wanted to enter a float into the parade and we also wanted to win the best float. Now I’ve never helped with a float before and it’s really kind of a lot of work. But after a couple of weeks of planning and revising our float, we were ready for the parade. There is always two parades on Wednesday, one in the morning and one in the evening – so the day finally came that we pulled the float out of the warehouse. She looked Great! Now I don’t want to sound biased or anything, but I couldn’t believe anyone could possibly beat our float! I didn’t do that much to help build it, but I felt like a proud parent as it seemed to shine out in the parking lot as it was heading to our spot in the line up. As the parade was getting organized, I took some time to walk up to watch it. As I’m walking, I thought how funny it is to be in such a small town that you literally know almost everyone. The first parade entry that  I went by was a convertible with the Dairy Princess in it. They caught my eye when they waved Hi to me.  Both the driver and the Dairy Princess are friends of ours. I didn’t get too much further and then I saw a local band that was in the parade that I also knew. Well, you get the picture. I think I knew most everyone in the parade and also who was watching the parade. Just too funny! Then it came to the judging of the floats. And guess what? We got second 🙁 Now I knew that I was a little competitive, but this confirmed that I must be REALLY competitive. Oh well, we’re already working on ideas for next year and it’s going to be Fantastic! You might just want to come to the parade next year to see our float! As for the night parade, we couldn’t get by without having more rain and storms. With tornadoes sighted in the area and 1 1/2 inches of rain that fell in less than 7 minutes – you guessed it, the night parade was cancelled. I was disappointed because I was going to walk the parade by our float and throw out candy. But I also wasn’t really that excited about walking in a down pour of rain either.

There is a lot of candy thrown out in the local parades. These two boys are ready for it.

Eggs

Eggs.  Well, we’ve got eggs. To be honest, we’ve got a LOT of eggs. I don’t know if the chickens don’t realize about the molting thing that their supposed to go through or what.. but we’ve got eggs. So the first thing that I did with the extra eggs was to ‘cook’ them in the fire barrel with the trash. Now I’m thinking that this is a good idea right? Well, it really wasn’t that good of an idea after the fact. What happened it that only part of the eggs got cooked and the rest just kind of rotted in the fire barrel and it stunk. So the other day I had again too many eggs and I knew that I couldn’t do the fire barrel thing again, so I ended up scrambling 14 dozen eggs for the cats. Do you have any idea how many 14 dozen eggs make for scrambled eggs? Let’s just say it’s a LOT! I ended up putting two tubs of these eggs in the barn for the cats and Reno to eat and I’m thinking that eventually they’ll get it all ate. Now tonight I took all the eggs from the last couple of days and looked at them to realize that it’s again too many for us to eat. With my options being a little limited at this point, I ended up putting the eggs in a 5 gallon pail and scrambling them with my hands. If you’ve had farm eggs before you know that the yolks are a lot tougher than ‘town’ eggs, so the process of scrambling them took some time. After being up to my elbows in eggs, I finally got it pretty much mixed up. I don’t know how many eggs I had, but I’d guess maybe 10 dozen? So now I’ve got a 5 gallon pail of eggs and I started to water them down. My thought was that if I watered them down, I could put them out in the field and that would be a good idea. That’s what I did and I guess we’ll just have to see if this was the best idea yet for them or not.

So after I got rid of the extra eggs, I could still smell the fire barrel. I decided that I should probably clean it out since I had the time tonight. Wow, that might not have been the best decision I’ve made for awhile. It was terrible! What I ended up doing was taking a sand shovel and a bucket and scooping it out. I laid the barrel out on it’s side so I could get to it better. Like I said, it stunk. But once I started, I thought might just as well finish it. Man I was glad once I got it finish because for some reason I ended up stinking just like it. Now I don’t know where my yard trailer went for behind the mower, but I couldn’t find it for anything. So since I made the commitment to do this, and I couldn’t find the trailer, I ended up pulling the buckets through the yard to the dumpster. They are coming on Wednesday to empty the dumpster so it only made sense right? The buckets kept getting heavier and heavier as I was dragging them across the yard, and I don’t know if it was because they were literally heavier or if it was the sweat that was now dripping off my face that caused me to think that they were heavier. Either way… I was getting pretty tired and sore dragging them through the yard and lifting them in the dumpster.  After I finally got done I jumped into the shower. And even after the very long shower that I took I could still smell the smell from those rotten eggs that were partially cooked. So I grabbed a lemon from the fridge and wiped my hands down to cut the odor. It worked for awhile, but not so much now again. Maybe by tomorrow it’ll be gone? I’m just hoping anyway.

Farm stuff

The weather is still really crappy, I know – your’e surprised right? Anyway, there’s not that much to do in the fields because they are still so wet. Daryl went out today to just check them out, and he said that it’s so wet that you just sink in when your’e walking in the fields. The corn is really starting to show stress (along with the farmers!) and we are sure hoping that the weather forecast is correct for this coming week. It’s supposed to be in the high 70’s and almost 80 all week with only one day with a high chance of rain. Man, I sure hope they’re right about the drier weather.

So what have we been doing ? Well, we did actually spend all afternoon on Saturday mowing the lawn where we could. The ditches are so out of control with all the water standing in them, but we did get the rest of the yard finished. Daryl mowed part of the ditches where he could and he said he saw 3 snakes again. YIKES ! I said, that’s why I call it the snake ditch. Totally gross! Our gas weed eater is not working very good, and I’m going to see this coming week if there is someone who can fix it. We do have an electric one that we can use, but if you live on a farm – some of the spots that you want to clean up have some pretty tough weeds! The weed eater does start pretty good, but then it only stays running if you hold it a certain way and … Well, let’s just say that it’s not the most user friendly machine that I’ve used in awhile. And since we’re having a family reunion on the farm at the end of this month, we’ll need to start thinking about getting the yard all cleaned up. Now that I’m thinking of the family reunion, I’m wondering if one of the ‘fun’ things that we can plan would be to pick rock? Yea, it probably wouldn’t go over so well would it.

As for the farm animals, one of the things that I’ve noticed lately with our chickens is that they’ve been walking around in kind of a chicken mob. Now normally they all just scatter by themselves, but just this past week or so, they’ve been all hanging out together and I’m not sure why. Also check out the peacock in the following picture. I’m thinking that he’s glad that Daryl got his tractor fixed so it’s a high place to watch everyone, but I don’t think Daryl would be too happy about that.

Sam the peacock is just trying to stay away from the chicken gang

On top of the tractor, Sam the peacock is just trying to stay away from the chicken gang

And talking about high places – I was outside early yesterday morning and this old Tom Cat caught my eye. He was just hanging out up in the hay loft just watching what’s going on in the yard I guess. It looks like a pretty good spot to me and too bad Sam the peacock doesn’t sit up there instead of the tractor.

In the small window of the barn is the Tom Cat

And for our new little kitty, Pepper. Well, he’s been spending the afternoons with our dog taking naps.

Technology

Tonight after work I volunteered to transfer some old photographs that were being stored in Lawler over to a CD that copies can be made from. Simple right? Yea… Well, it all started with getting all the hardware that I needed organized:scanner, laptop, extra cords, well, you get the picture right? Now I’ve scanned literally thousands of pictures and when I was talking to some of the members of the Irish Festival Committee, I said that scanning these pictures and making copies will be the easiest thing in the world. But tonight I had such terrible luck. Kyle and I got ready and after I got the card table set up, and then all the cords plugged in, the next thing was to start scanning the photos. With the amount that I had, I figured that I would have around an hours worth of time. Again, this is all based on the ones that I’ve done in the past. Well, there was something wrong and after it would scan the photo, it would just have that little circle thing spin and spin on the computer and it would tell me that it wasn’t responding. So, I’d cancel the job and reset everything, unplug and plug everything in again, and restart the computer. NO LUCK! Now I don’t consider myself a patient person and in these situations, it only proves my point. So after about 1 1/2 hours I gave up. The bad part of all this is that the person that I convinced that this would be such an easy project was also there tonight and he just looked at me and I could just almost hear what he was thinking and it wasn’t probably good. OK, so when I got home I tried it on a picture of ours and guess what? It took around 10 seconds to save a copy! Now it doesn’t make any sense why I would have to log onto the internet to do this, but I had even done that when I was there. But maybe it’s blocking something in the program or something. I’m not sure, but I’m going to give it another try tomorrow. Man I sure hope it goes better than today!

While Kyle and I were in town today, we checked out the progress on the old building that’s getting renovated. It’s coming along really fast and with a new store front already on and the back addition taken off the building, they’ll be ready for the Irish Fest in a couple of weeks.

The back part of the building was added on later. It needed to be taken off the original building

And how does your garden grow?

And how does your garden grow? Well, it sure couldn’t be any worse than mine.

Not pretty!

Not pretty!

But I still have faith that it will get better soon, so I’m still watering the plants that are in the green house. Well with the exception of the spinach because it kind of turned all to seed. I guess I just wish that I would have had a crystal ball to see that it was going to be at least mid June before I get the garden in. If I would have just known that, I would have put in a lot of dirt and just planned on growing them completely inside this year.

Getting pretty big!

Getting pretty big!

But ‘rain’ has officially joined the group of 4 letter words that is definitely frowned on around our house. We got another inch of rain last night, and it rained on and off all day today. As for tonight? Well, it’s starting to rain again. We’re hoping for better weather next week. It’s such a shame the weather is so crappy. Not only for the farmers, but also because with Kyle home we had a lot of things that we were hoping that he could help us with. And one of them was picking rock. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the next couple of days bring. But as for tonight, Kyle lit a bonfire anyway.

I’m just saying…

Well you remember those little kitties that we found the other day? We had some bad luck with them, and by this weekend the only one that survived was this little orange kitty. Everything was going OK with her even though we had to feed her constantly! But still, everything was going pretty good. Then all of a sudden we were trying to figure out if she ever went to the bathroom. We couldn’t remember her ever doing this, and then the worrying started. Now I don’t know how long a cat can go without going to the bathroom, but this little thing’s belly was getting pretty big and when you touched it, you could tell it hurt. OK, so now what? So Kyle and I went to the grocery store and thought we’d look around to see what we could come up with. We ended up in the refrigerator section and found ourselves standing in front of Activia. Now to be honest, I don’t know too much about this product other than it’s supposed to have ‘digestive health benefits’. Just look how good Jamie Lee Curtis looks right? So standing in the refrigerator section, Kyle looked and me and we both shrugged our shoulders and thought that it really couldn’t hurt right? I mean if people can eat it, why in the world couldn’t little kitties. So home we went with our 4 pack of this yogurt. Once we got in the house, the little kitty could hear the door slam, and even though she’s in a big container in the laundry room – the VERY loud meowing started. So I warmed up some milk and mixed it with the yogurt stuff and spooned it into the bottle. Now for the true test, will this kitty like it? Yea, that’s pretty much an understatement. She drank the whole bottle. Her belly was almost wider than her whole body length after she got done. So after she fell asleep, back into the container she went for the night. We figured it was either going to help her or kill her – but either way I’m sure we’ll see some result in the morning.  And what did this morning bring? Well, this must be some pretty good stuff! Yea, she was a lot lighter this morning and it worked! So now we’ve been having to bottle feed her almost every two hours and I”m just saying that for this kitty only being a couple of weeks old, she sure is a lot of work. But you know what? She’s also pretty darn cute.IMG_0358a

Digging up stuff

With all the rain that we’ve been having lately, it seems that stuff that was buried for some time, is making it’s way up through the layers of dirt. Now if it was really cool stuff, that would be one thing, but some old metal and wood.. well that’s not really the treasure that I was hoping for!

When I was out running (yup, still trying to stay on the schedule) I saw some ‘stuff’ sticking out of the road by our farm. Now honestly, this really isn’t that uncommon. A couple of years ago we had this wooden log make it’s way up to the top and let me just say that a log coming out of your gravel road is kind of freaky. So tonight when I saw that there was something on the road, it really didn’t surprise me too much. But the reason that I stopped and took a second look was because it was metal and it was pretty sharp. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a flat tire and I’m not looking for a reason to have one again, and these two pieces of metal I’m thinking sure could do the trick. So I caught Daryl just finishing up with unloading the corn for the cows (the mill is fixed – Yea!) and he said that the next thing that was on his list to do was to level the driveway.

Happy cows with the mill fixed.

Happy cows with the mill fixed.

He would work on the driveway and then check out wanted him to look at. So while I was waiting for him to help me, I found, what we always thought was a tree that was in our yard sticking up again with the last rain.

What we always thought was a tree from years and years ago

What we always thought was a tree from years and years ago

We never could just figure out when there would have been a tree there in the middle of the driveway, and no one ever remembers it either. IMG_0356But as Daryl was working on grading the driveway to get rid of the water washes, out this tree came. Score! What we weren’t expecting though was that it really wasn’t a tree at all after all these years, but it was an old post. So now we don’t have to try to figure out why a tree was there, but why in the world would there be an old wooden post and how many years ago would that have been put in? I’m thinking that it was probably put in years and years ago when maybe the farmstead just started to get going. OK, maybe I’ve watched too many Little House on the Prairie movies, but you have to admit, it’s still kind of cool to think about.

Finally this wood came out of our driveway!

Finally this wood came out of our driveway!

The driveway looks good!

The driveway looks good!

OK, so now we have the driveway scraped and down the road Daryl went with the Oliver and the blade to work on the two metal pieces.IMG_0354IMG_0353IMG_0352 It took a couple of times to get the two pieces of metal out of the road, but finally out they both came. They were both around 2 feet long and pretty wicked. It looks like to me that they are some kind of posts or something. Humm… sounds like another mystery to me.

Our Peacocks

Our peacocks have been the nosiest that they’ve ever been! I have no idea what’s going on, but they seem to be screaming most of the days lately. Along with the screaming back and forth during the day, I’ve also got some trouble with Lucky. For some reason, he’s thinking that he wants to claim the front porch as his porch! Now peacock screams are loud and what I found out when I’m out running, is that you can literally hear them all the way up our road. Take my word for it, they’re loud. But as I was in our living room this morning, all of a sudden Lucky started screaming – at me I guess, and when I looked where the noise was coming from, he was looking in the french doors at me! So after the first, and second time that I scared him away, I decided it’s after 9 am in the morning and if the boys weren’t awake by now – maybe it’s a good alarm clock for them!

Hammer mill

If you remember before we left for New York, the hammer mill broke when Daryl was unloading the feed for the cows. I was one of those days when just about everything broke when you looked at it wrong, and of course it’s also when you’re in a hurry. Even though our mill is quite old, it still is a good mill and really hasn’t given us much trouble in the past. But Daryl found out when he was trying to get the part to fix it, that it was going to be harder to find the part that we were thinking it was going to be. He did eventually find a dealer that would order the part and of course it seems like if you have older machinery at your farm, the ‘special’ order parts always come with a pretty good price tag. But we were happy that they could get the part, and Daryl picked it up the other day. The part that was broke was under the equipment and in one of the hardest to reach spots. Kyle ended up helping to compress the coil that was hooked on the part, and eventually it was put back together again. When this originally broke, it kind of messed up the power take off, and I think Daryl was going to have to take that into town to get that fixed. Daryl still talks about that afternoon when this all happened. He said if he wouldn’t have quit planting beans, he would have been done with the field work and the mill never would have gotten broke. I guess it was just one of those days.DSCN6716DSCN6715
