Digging up stuff

With all the rain that we’ve been having lately, it seems that stuff that was buried for some time, is making it’s way up through the layers of dirt. Now if it was really cool stuff, that would be one thing, but some old metal and wood.. well that’s not really the treasure that I was hoping for!

When I was out running (yup, still trying to stay on the schedule) I saw some ‘stuff’ sticking out of the road by our farm. Now honestly, this really isn’t that uncommon. A couple of years ago we had this wooden log make it’s way up to the top and let me just say that a log coming out of your gravel road is kind of freaky. So tonight when I saw that there was something on the road, it really didn’t surprise me too much. But the reason that I stopped and took a second look was because it was metal and it was pretty sharp. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a flat tire and I’m not looking for a reason to have one again, and these two pieces of metal I’m thinking sure could do the trick. So I caught Daryl just finishing up with unloading the corn for the cows (the mill is fixed – Yea!) and he said that the next thing that was on his list to do was to level the driveway.

Happy cows with the mill fixed.

He would work on the driveway and then check out wanted him to look at. So while I was waiting for him to help me, I found, what we always thought was a tree that was in our yard sticking up again with the last rain.

What we always thought was a tree from years and years ago

We never could just figure out when there would have been a tree there in the middle of the driveway, and no one ever remembers it either. IMG_0356But as Daryl was working on grading the driveway to get rid of the water washes, out this tree came. Score! What we weren’t expecting though was that it really wasn’t a tree at all after all these years, but it was an old post. So now we don’t have to try to figure out why a tree was there, but why in the world would there be an old wooden post and how many years ago would that have been put in? I’m thinking that it was probably put in years and years ago when maybe the farmstead just started to get going. OK, maybe I’ve watched too many Little House on the Prairie movies, but you have to admit, it’s still kind of cool to think about.

Finally this wood came out of our driveway!

The driveway looks good!

OK, so now we have the driveway scraped and down the road Daryl went with the Oliver and the blade to work on the two metal pieces.IMG_0354IMG_0353IMG_0352 It took a couple of times to get the two pieces of metal out of the road, but finally out they both came. They were both around 2 feet long and pretty wicked. It looks like to me that they are some kind of posts or something. Humm… sounds like another mystery to me.
