Steam Engine Days

It was a very windy day today and we were concerned that the wind was going to blow down the corn. Daryl went out into the fields to check it out, and he said that he didn’t see any of the ears of the corn broke off in the fields, so we were OK. He thought at first on changing the heads of the combine and taking the bean head off and putting on the corn head – but the corn was still a little green in spots and since it wasn’t blowing down he decided to wait. So it was later in the afternoon when we decided to head north to Mabel, Minnesota for their Steam Engine Days. It was their 60th anniversary of having this celebration and let me say that they sure had a lot of stuff there! There were so many antique tractors that we guessed at least a couple of hundred and I think that this would probably be on the low side for a guess. There wasn’t  as many Olivers (Daryl’s favorite) there, but a lot of John Deere and Allis-Chalmers tractors. I bought a lottery ticket that they were going to draw on Sunday for a John Deere tractor. I sure hope that I win! I only bought one ticket because at $5 a ticket, I’m too cheap to buy too many! But someone has to win and they only pull one ticket… so I have a chance.

Rows and rows of tractors.

We walked around for sometime just checking it out and then just hung out for awhile. We laughed when we saw two kids in the straw pile. They must have done some thrashing earlier in the day and had still the straw left over on a pile. We really think that these two kids must be ‘town kids’ because farm kids should know that if you are going to play in a straw pile you are going to be really itchy once you get out. I guess these kids will learn this real soon.

Fun now... but they are going to be pretty itchy later!

It also looks like during the day they plowed up some ground and picked corn with the antique machinery.  And we did see a couple of people that we knew there so that was fun. When we were sitting at this one historical barn eating popcorn and having a drink, we saw that there was a tractor pull that was going to start soon.  We didn’t really want to stay for that, so we decided to leave and  find some supper. We ventured out to Spring Grove and ate at a restaurant that we’ve never been to before. It was really good and now to head south to home. As we were driving, we decided to take some detours and check out a couple of other towns and see what was going on. There wasn’t much happening and soon we were pulling into our driveway for the night.
