Will work for food

I don’t know if your Mom is like this or not, but sometimes when I do something for her she feels like she should pay me. So we have this understanding that if she thinks that she should pay me – I ask to take the payment in soup. I know that I’m getting the better end of the deal, and today she came over to settle up. She called and said she was on the way over and in the kitchen on my stove was a warm kettle of fresh homemade beef soup. Yum.  I was just thinking this morning that I’ll have to watch what I’m eating if I’m going to go away with the girls for a couple of days and what we’ll mostly be doing is hanging out on the lake in our swimming suits. But that is more than a week away and the soup is really good. I’m just wondering what I can do for Mom for the next kettle of soup?

Mom also brought over a bag of shredded paper. I was talking to her the other night when she was working on shredding it and I asked her to keep them for me and I’ll use them in the chicken coop. She brought over a huge bag full and I only used half of it for all the nests. They were pretty bare and I’m hoping that the chickens are going to like it.

Today when I was by the garden I noticed a lot of these little blue butterflies around. There was probably about 20 (?) of them and I don’t ever remember seeing them before. I looked up blue butterflies on the web and it seems like they are pretty common and don’t really harm anything. I’m not sure where they came from, but I hope they stay for awhile. I also was looking around today for something that caught my eye in the garden yesterday. I think it was either a mouse or a small striped gopher. Either way, I’m not real excited about it being in there. I couldn’t find it today, but if I do find it – I’m going to try to kill it. Notice how I used the word – ‘try’.

A lot of farmers are spraying their fields. With the hot heat and low rainfall, the bugs out in the fields have been terrible. So when I was outside with the dogs I could hear a plane close by and off the dogs ran to see if they could find out what was going on. The plane was at our neighbors and for awhile the dogs were pretending that they were going to chase the plane back and forth (yea.. they looked pretty stupid!) But finally they gave up and just sat and watched it. I am amazed on how good the pilots are of these planes. They sometimes even go under the road wires because they fly so low. I was hoping that he wouldn’t hit our neighbors windmill and he didn’t even come close. Some farmers are also using helicopters to spray and I would like to see that. They come in on a flat bed trailer and when they need more spray they land on the trailer out in the field and someone fills up their tank and off they go again. Pretty cool! Even though the corn looks pretty bad this year and there was some discussion if you should spray or not, it sounds like if you don’t try to kill most of the bugs this year then they’ll go dormit and lay eggs and hatch even worse in the coming years. It’s just been a really tough year for farmers.

Lastly, I was so sick and tired of my head being so hot with my hair that I called the lady who usually cuts it and told her let’s cut a bunch off ! I know that someday I will wish that I had thick hair again – but when it’s so hot out, I’m not so fond of thick hair. It didn’t seem that we cut that much off until I looked at the floor in her shop and there was this huge mound of hair. We probably cut about 1/2 of it off (both length and thinned it) and when I took a shower tonight I could really tell that I did cut a bunch off. I like it so far.
