Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving! And what a great day we had hanging out with my In-laws. Even though not all of Daryl’s nieces and nephews could make it today, a majority of them did. There was a full house with about 30 of his family all enjoying the day at his brother and sister in law’s farm. And what would Thanksgiving be without ton’s of good food to share? So there was just about every type of food sitting on the counter, stove, by the sink, and on the kitchen table. If you were hungry after you got there – we’ll that’s just your fault! The ‘bigger’ kids spent the afternoon playing euchre, while the ‘little’ kids were running outside taking the dog for a walk or feeding the horse, or at one point the boys were picking on the girls. Not really sure what that was all about other than it ended up with one of the little great nieces crying and was spilling her guts on what some boy did . But after about 30 seconds – off she went again so it couldn’t have been too bad. With a full afternoon full of food, laughter, and cards, we ended up heading home late in the afternoon. We’ve live the closest to Daryl’s brother, which is just across the section. And that means we live about 1 1/2 miles away from them so it only takes about 5 minutes to get home. Once we got home I knew that I needed to move around so I wouldn’t just lay on the couch and fall asleep, so outside I went to the Roadhouse to bring in the wrapped gifts and do some additional cleaning.DSCN7525DSCN7526 I wanted to wash some of the toys with bleach just in case the little kids played with them this weekend. William also was home so he helped put up the outside lights on the house and I ended the night just checking out how good my little funeral chair cleaned up. Now I know that it’s not perfect, but it’s not that bad either. I ended up taking the finish off of it and just put a coat of  lemon oil on it to seal it. Check it out

Grocery store the night before Thanksgiving

Tonight I needed to pick up some stuff, so I decided to wait and get my Thanksgiving groceries while I was in town. Man, that was a mistake! The main thing that I needed was some shredded potatoes and I thought to myself, no big deal right? I’ll get in and then get right back out of the grocery store. When I stepped into the store I knew that I was probably wrong with that assumption. There was literally a couple of hundred people in the store and looking pretty frantic. So I put my head down, brought my shoulders up a little, and joined them in the hunt. When I started to get a little frantic on where in the world these potatoes were, I looked around and just had to laugh. We literally looked like we were on bumper cars and everyone was just going around in circles. No one really made eye contact but had this weird look on their faces like they were on some type of a mission or something. It really was kind of funny! So I’m right in the middle of this and acting pretty much exactly the same as the others… and then I find the frozen section of the store. But I have to admit when I got there  I was a little confused and just had this dumb look on my face as I’m standing in front of the freezer case. I couldn’t seem to find the shredded potatoes. OK, sweet potato fries, french fries, curly fries, seasoned fries, onion rings, empty space, tater tots. Weird. So once more… sweet potato fries, french fries, curly fries, seasoned fries, onion rings, empty space, tater tots. Hum. Out comes the glasses and as I’m squinting and making a scrunched up face (that really never helps does it?)I read the small print of the ’empty’ space. You guessed it. Shredded Potatoes. 20131127_173639_resized (2)There must be a lot of people eating shredded potatoes this Thanksgiving. As I’m standing there I could see a lady beside me stopping for only about a minute and then she grabbed her phone, made a phone call, and then she was gone. But I really didn’t want to go to another grocery store tonight because I just wanted to get home. So I grabbed my purse, slung it behind me, and decided to go in. I thought that maybe there was some mixed up in the cooler. SCORE! there were a couple of bags kind of pushed to the back of those tater tots! As I was grabbing them and putting them in my cart, I swear it was almost  like winning the lottery. I was never so happy and proud of being the person to actually find some shredded potatoes. So with a smug look on my face and as I’m rejoining the rest of the group pushing my grocery cart, I caught the next shopper standing exactly where I was standing. I could just imagine what was going through her head – sweet potato fries, french fries, curly fries, seasoned fries, onion rings, empty space, tater tots.

Arts and Crafts & Christmas cards tonight

I did some running around after work trying to find some ‘stuff’ to finish off some craft projects. Now who would have thought that a wooden yardstick would be so hard to find? Well, I think I might have one tucked away in a cupboard someplace. It’s one that we should probably get rid of anyway. We used it one time to measure carpet for a room and the oddest thing happened when the carpet was delivered. It was way too small. Now that didn’t make sense and to top it off, we were getting it from my brother in law so he really looked at us strange. What we found out was that our yard stick, which normally should be 36 inches, was a couple of inches shorter than that. So when we were thinking we were measure yards.. yea, you can see where the problem was. Since this episode of the two short of carpet, we now always have my brother in law measure the rooms. It seems to work much better! OK, so maybe I’ll see if I can find that short yard stick to cut up tomorrow night because there is no one that has one in town. But when I was looking for one in Good Will, I found the coolest chair. So I bought it. I’m not sure too many people would like it, but I do.  It’s another ‘project’. It looks like an old funeral chair, but it has some oil or grease spilled on the wooden back. I told the check out lady that if I can’t get the stain off, she’ll be seeing the chair donated again next week. After a hair cut and picking up some milk, I finally made it home for the night. Since last night we were able to get the lights on the garland, I wanted to get the rest of the house lights up. But we didn’t get that far. Daryl had all the dishes done, which was really nice and we spent some of the time tonight finishing up most of the Christmas cards.

Writing out Christmas cards - Done!

Writing out Christmas cards – Done!

We were lucky enough to get a family picture taken this summer when Kyle was home and I love having all of us on the picture. After the cards were done, next thing was to do arts and crafts. I wrapped my families gifts for St. Nick’s party, but will still need to wrap the girls gifts yet. I just ran out of time tonight. I ended the night ordering some pictures for my Aunt that she needs for this weekend. She’s giving the to her family for an  early Christmas gift.  And since I was ordering her pictures, I ordered a large poster of William from Sunday cutting down our Christmas tree to put in an old window that I bought awhile back. Yup, you guessed it. Another craft project. Man, I really wish there was more time in the day or maybe a better idea is to just to have more energy to get everything done ! But it’s almost midnight and I better hit the sack. Last work day tomorrow for the week. Yea!!

Making a list and checking it twice

Even though today was Sunday and is supposed to be a day of rest, it was far from a restful day. I had more things on my list than I knew that I could get done, but I was going to give it a shot.

First thing was to get the artificial tree up in the Roadhouse. I needed the tree up because with my family coming on Saturday to celebrate St. Nick’s day and  also having a special guest coming, I didn’t want to have the inside of the Roadhouse completely bare. I knew where I stored the tree and tree stand from last year, and honestly that was a big part of getting ready. And it didn’t take too long to put up. Of course Reno was there to help. Check it out.

Can you see why now Reno wouldn't come outside with me yesterday?

Can you see why now Reno wouldn’t come outside with me yesterday?

I had the rug stored from our living room down in the basement of our house, so out came that and I half drug and half carried it across the yard. Once I put the tree on it, it was really starting to shape up. Then I grabbed our old door that was originally on our house before we remolded and decided to hang that by the tree and chair. DSCN7508I’m sure if you would see this door you would wonder how it ever escaped the fire pile. But we’ve spent so much time repairing it before we remolded and when the dogs were little, it kind of holds a special part in our hearts. When it even ‘looked’ like it might rain or thunder, the dogs would push in the screen and try to get into the house.

So around noon, I was still on schedule with my Sunday list and feeling quite good about it. We had company come over around noon to see how Daryl’s doing and brought supper with them. Score! After a nice visit, William and I jumped into the truck and headed north to get our house Christmas tree. We pretty much have always gotten a real tree for our living room,  and with Daryl not able to help me get one this year, it was really nice that William was home to help. I didn’t know if he actually knew what he was getting himself into by going along, but hey.. it was too late because we were on the road. I made a comment when we got to the tree farm that it wasn’t very busy at all. But here we found out that they weren’t open for business yet. They said that if we wanted to go and cut one down, they didn’t care. So off William and I went. And man it was cold when that wind hit you in the face. But after walking around literally in circles, we decided on one that was going to be perfect. William drug it back to the shed and up it went on the shaker to get the needles out.

I was so glad that William came to help

I was so glad that William came to help

The tree shaker did an OK job, but the tree is really thick and I know that there’s more in there. Into the truck it went and home we went. We waited until some of the wind died down outside and got out the ladder to hang the garland on the house. Did you know when the wind dies down it gets even colder? Just ask William and I about that. We hurried with the garland and that got checked off the to do  list. The next thing is that I want to make most of the Christmas wrapping paper this year, so I drug out the supplies and start working on it today. I think it’s so funny all the different things that happen at our kitchen table. I couldn’t imagine any family not having a table that they can do their work on. From when the kids were little coloring, to homework, to craft projects, to playing euchre. I wouldn’t give up our table for anything!

Arts and craft project. Making wrapping paper

Arts and craft project. Making wrapping paper

Now we had to cut the tree level and bring it into the house. We’re not planning on decorating it until Kyle comes home, but needed it to be in the tree stand for water. It wasn’t the easiest to cut, but soon it was in the stand and that was a good job done. Who seems to like the tree the best is Little Kitty. Daryl said that in the morning the tree stand was pretty much empty of water. Well, we found out the reason tonight. I think Little Kitty thinks it’s like an automatic waterier. When it gets low, Bam! It magically get’s filled up again.

Looks pretty guilty to me!

Looks pretty guilty to me!

I went to visit my Mom to talk about some Christmas stuff and she seems so organized. She buys gifts for everyone which means it’s around 40 to 45 people. And she’s almost done too! ohh… Christmas gifts haven’t even made it to my list yet.  Even though I didn’t get everything done today,  we ended the night talking with Kyle on Skype. This is always the best way to end a busy day.

The guys talking tonight.

One of my favorite places

One of my most favorite places around this time of the year to visit is the Fort Atkinson Nursery. Now it isn’t fancy and doesn’t have anything but just what they need, but it’s pretty cool. If you’re not familiar to where it actually is located in Fort, you will first see the signs on the main highway. Then after a couple of turns and more signs through the small town, you’ll come up to what looks like a private work shed. You might not know if they’re open or not, but then the ‘OPEN’ sign will catch your eye and you know that your in luck and head to the door.IMG_0845 The picture above is only 1/2 of the building, but it gives you the idea on how informal the nursery actually is. Once you open the door the smell of fresh pine trees just hits you. It’s a great smell and this time of the year it instantly brings back tons of memories on past Christmas’s.

Wreaths range from a couple of feet wide to the size that fits on a large building.

They flock a lot of Christmas trees. Some white and I've seen burgundy and red ones also

But now that I was inside, I couldn’t really find anyone around, and after walking to the back room I did find someone who worked there that could help me. When I was commenting on how great the place smells the helper just half smiled and said that he really couldn’t even smell it anymore. He was putting up some more cut Christmas trees in the back room and knew exactly what I was after. I ordered some garland again this year and was ready to pick it up. I order garland from this business every year not only because they have the best price, but also I just plain like this place a lot. I knew that the garland would be ready to go today because I had ordered it on Thursday in the afternoon and they said that I could pick it up in a couple of hours. On Thursday! This nursery does a lot of work during the summer and if you visit them then, you’ll see rows and rows of trees planted just waiting to go to landscaping in someone’s yard or maybe a new windbreak for a farmer. While I was paying for my stuff, the garland was loaded in the Pacifica and off I went to get some groceries. I left the garland in the car until late that night just because it smelled so good. It sure beats the heck out of those little green tree air fresheners  that some people put in their cars 🙂 Now that William is home for the week, I’m looking to see if he’ll help me put it up on the porch.

I also started to work on the Roadhouse tonight. It’s not bad and only needs to be vacuumed and organized. After giving it some heat with a Nipco and our heat stand, it was nice and toasty in there. And that’s where the trouble began. Reno was hanging in there with me and when I came to the house, I couldn’t get her off the couch. Literally! I threw an afghan on the  couch and there she laid for a couple of hours watching me. But when I wanted to shut off the lights and call it a night – she wasn’t going to budge. She just looked at me and then pretended that she was sleeping. Finally I had to have William go out and see if he could get her out of there and into the barn for the night. He had better luck than I did, and it wasn’t long until everything was closed up for the night. William had brought home his projector from college for the week, so after Reno was locked up, we spent the rest of the night and into the morning watching movies.

Daryl is feeling better every day and it was just a really good Saturday!

And the chickens were nestled…

It’s supposed to get so cold this weekend so I decided that I’d better get the chicken coop all closed up for the winter. I’m not planning on locking them in yet,  but just trying to get ready for when that day comes. It wasn’t too windy after work tonight, so off to the milk house (that’s been transformed into a work shop) to get the supplies. Daryl had some plastic in there that I was planning on using and I needed to grab the staple gun. Now I was set. I thought I had cut the length just perfect until I started to unfold it. It was like the fish story in the bible… it just kept growing and growing. Since my scissors was dull from cutting the living room matting, cutting this plastic again was more of a bother than not. So as I was unfolding it, I realized that it could be doubled over and work even better. Yea!  It almost looked like I had planned it this way. As I was working on this, Daryl’s brother was visiting and came over to give me a hand. We needed a small ladder to hit the high part of the plastic so off I ran to get it out of the basement. And that’s when I fell for the first time this winter. My shoes hit some ice and the next thing I knew I was on the cement. Lucky for me that I hit mostly on my backside and there’s a lot of extra cushion to absorb the shock. But I have to admit that my neck and butt is pretty sore tonight. But I didn’t break anything and Daryl didn’t fall…. so it’s not a bad thing at all. After I got the ladder and we got everything stapled up, Daryl’s brother went to his farm quick to get some small lathes to help hold the plastic on. With the crazy wind that we’ve had this year, I’m sure that it wouldn’t take much to tear the plastic off. Once we got everything on, I must say that this plastic shouldn’t be going anywhere this winter and it’ll sure help keep the snow out of the chicken coop. I’m not sure that the chickens like it so much yet. But once the first couple of feet of snow starts blowing, you can bet they’ll you’ll find them all nestled in the straw.DSCN7495

I also wanted to make some cookies tonight. Now there are things that are just staples in our house like butter, salsa, chocolate chips, nuts, and cream cheese. So when it came to start making the cookies, I guess flour isn’t something that I worry so much about. I tried to find a recipe that only needed 1 cup of flour, but even taking the recipes  in 1/2, I didn’t have any luck. So I thought, let’s just see if I can find something that takes oatmeal. Score! So out comes the ‘quick’ oatmeal container and it felt a little light. Yup, you guessed it. It was also almost empty. Now I did have ‘old fashioned’ oatmeal, but I’ve learned my lesson that you can’t swap one for the other. Finally I was able to put what flour that I had in the kitchen cupboard and the remaining oatmeal together and made a half recipe of some cookies. They were looking pretty good before they went into the oven so I had high hopes for when they were done. DSCN7493And I was right, they weren’t too bad after all. My plan for Saturday? Get groceries. DSCN7501

The boys & baking pine cones

Tonight Daryl was finally up to skyping with Kyle and visiting with William. With Kyle on the East Coast and not coming home until Christmas, he was more than anxious to see Daryl and talk with him a little bit. And then William did a road trip home to say Hi and then drove half way back to college and stayed at a friends house. He also just wanted to check in and see how everyone was doing. Today was a much better day for Daryl and I’m sure that as the days goes on, he’ll just keep feeling better.  But with Daryl on the mend, I am really messing with the cows and animals in the morning. For the past year, Daryl has been feeding the cows and letting the chickens out for the day. But now, I’ve been hanging with them in the morning. At first they just stared at me but it didn’t take them long to figure out that it really doesn’t matter who they see in the morning, as long as they see someone.

So my project tonight involved pine cones. I didn’t have any nice ones in the house to work with and I almost caved and bought some in the store that were already pretty. But that probably would be kind of a sin or something because we’ve got all pine trees on our farm and tons and tons of pine cones. But the problem is that they are not open and look for lack of better words, just plain ugly! So out comes the ipad and I Google how to dry pine cones. And guess what? There was 1,560,000 different pages to look at if I wanted to on the topic of drying pine cones.  Here I was hoping to just find one!! But I guess there’s a lot of people that need to dry pine cones for some reason. Weird. OK, so what the instructions are was to line a baking sheet with tin foil and bake the pine cones for 30 minutes in a 200 degree oven. The instructions were to watch them closely so they don’t catch on fire and have excess smoke in your house. Now at this point I was wondering if I got dressed quick, I could still make it to the dollar store and pick some up. But I stuck to the original plan, got out the tin foil,  and into the oven they went.

These pine cones were pretty wet and tightly closed

These pine cones were pretty wet and tightly closed

I kept thinking of the ‘starting on fire’ comment,  but after 30 minutes the only thing different coming from the oven was a distinct odor of pine sap. So I reset the oven timer for another hour. By the time I got done with them, it took 3 1/2 hours to have them dry and open up. I’m not really sure what kind of pine cones other people use, but if you ever want to do this plan on having them in the oven for quite some time. I laughed when I was pulling a pan out to check them because Daryl was just coming into the kitchen and he seemed more interested than he really should have been on what I was doing. He came walking over to me, and then said in a sad voice that he thought I was taking cookies out of the oven. Wow, that was a pretty good hint wasn’t it? It kind of makes me wonder how my cookies smell when I’m baking them. Do they really smell like sap and wet pine cones?  Now that I’ve got all the pine cones baked that I needed, I guess I better switch over to cookies this weekend.

There’s no place like home

We were kind of thinking that Daryl might get out today, but not 100% positive. So I went to work,  and said that I’d be checking on him throughout the day to see what was up. Well I did get a call and they said that Daryl could come home this afternoon. I wanted to double check with him to make sure that he was on the same page, and soon I was off asking my boss if I could leave early. I went home first to change clothes and then to the local gas station to fill up the car. Even though our car has quite a few miles on it, it still has been getting in the low 20’s for gas mileage. And just as I was leaving the gas station, I saw all these men standing by our war memorial in their service dress. I wasn’t sure what was going on, and then I figured out that they were having some type of dedication or speaker. Not sure which. But it looked pretty cool with these service men all standing at attention in the middle of the memorial, I did a U turn on the highway and snapped a quick picture.

Memorial in Lawler

Memorial in Lawler

I stopped in the next town to do some errands, which seems to be an every day occurrence anymore, and then headed north to get Daryl. Now I usually don’t have the radio station on, but I only had one diet coke so far today and by this time and was thinking that the radio would keep me watching for deer along the road. So I’m driving and then on the radio I hear them reciting the Gettysburg Address. I’m thinking it must be a sign. I just saw all these guys in their Auxiliary uniforms and now this? Wow, kinda cool. When about an hour later I hear the same speech again and now I’m thinking what in the heck is going on? Here it turns out that today is the 150th anniversary of the speech. So now I’m thinking that maybe the servicemen and the anniversary isn’t such a coincidence and they had something to do with each other. But as I’m driving and listening to the speech (for the second time), I realized what a ‘score’ is. If you remember the speech, it goes … “Four score and seven years ago”.  Since a score is anything that is measured by 20, that would be 87 years. Now maybe you knew that, but I had time to listen to the speech today, twice, and just figured that out.  As I’m driving, I’m also remembering the only thing that Daryl asked me to bring. It was a button down shirt. He wanted this shirt so he didn’t have to pull a shirt over his head. Yup. you guessed it. I forgot it. Now I’m on the look out for any place that I thought would sell men’s shirts. I finally spotted one and I was in and out of the store within minutes. So I finally get to the hospital, park the car, and go find Daryl. By about this time, I’m getting pretty good finding my way to his room. His room was on the fifth floor but with 6th floor room numbers. Yea. He was waiting for me and his shirt (whew!). A trip to the pharmacy and soon we were on the way home. Now there is one glitch to this whole story, and it deals with the prescription drugs. We were asked quite a few times this past couple of days about what medications he uses. When he said none, they just couldn’t believe it. He did tell them that he took aspirin about two months ago for a headache and before that it was July of 2012 when we were on Ragbrai he took some Advil. They just were amazed,  and said that he wasn’t the normal patient that they see. But we didn’t think too much of this conversation until we got home. We unpacked his prescription bag that we got from the pharmacy and just stood at the kitchen table staring at all the bottles. He was prescribed nine medications. Yea.. nine. To make it even worse, they gave him medicine that was called one thing on his medication spreadsheet and another name on the bottles. Oh my. We had the worst time in the world trying to figure all this out, and to top it off, they forgot one. How confusing. So I don’t know if we were asked so many times about what medications he took to get us ready for this or not. But after a call back to the hospital to get it straight, we eventually got it all checked out. Anyway, I sure hope so. After the night doses of his meds, he was finally able to get some sleep. He really hasn’t had much sleep since last Thursday, so this was a good thing.  I think the old saying is true, ‘There’s no place like home’

Just Hanging out

Daryl is still in the hospital and I decided that tonight I should just stay home and see if he can get a good night sleep. He hasn’t sleep much (or any!) since he’s been in, so a good night sleep would do him good.

So I decided that I needed to try to get somethings done before he does come home. I did a couple of things outside, liked putting some extra insulation on the water lines by the Roadhouse and checking the chicken coop over. I’ve got to get some plastic on those windows before it really gets cold or worse … snows. Maybe I’ll get that done yet this week. We’ve been having some crazy wind lately and you know how much I just love wind! Not!! Anyway, trying to put up plastic on the windows wouldn’t work very well at all until the wind dies down. I found a couple of chickens roosting in the barn these last couple of days. Now they’re not dummies. There is fresh water, a bin of ground corn, and dog food. To be honest, the dog food is probably their #1 choice. Weird, I know. OK, so I got somethings done outside and headed inside for craft night. I needed to get a couple of things knocked off my ‘to do’ list, and tonight would be a great night to do that. But first, I was getting pretty hungry and to get that over with before I started with the projects. I didn’t really see anything that I was hungry for, so I settled. Now I learned something about myself tonight. I learned that if it was just going to be me for suppers – I think I would get a score of an F. Why? Well, I didn’t think that much of it when I was eating supper, but after I got done eating I realized that a bowl of cereal, potato chips, and a beer isn’t really a supper worth a higher score than an F. Oh well. I did make it up by baking some banana bread. I even added chocolate chips to it to give it a different taste.  I also couldn’t find a pan to bake it in, so I used my cast iron skillet and it worked great! That was the first time I’ve ever done that, and with banana bread it really cooked it even.

Looks kind of weird, but it worked!

Looks kind of weird, but it worked!

Now to work on some craft projects. I could hear Little Kitty scratching on the window, so both the cat and the dog came in to keep me company. By the end of the night, I was successful in getting almost 7 projects done. Shazam! I was so tired by bed time, I know that I didn’t move at all during the night. Check out my two helpers while Daryl is gone.

November 15th

If you know your Saints Celebrations, you might know that on November 15th is Saint Albert the Great Day. The reason that there was a day named after Albertus Magnus was because he was known to be  one of the Church’s greatest intellects. He was among the first and greatest of the natural scientists, gaining a reputation for expertise in biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geography, metaphysics, and mathematics. He was also very learned in biblical studies and theology. OK, so about now you’re wondering why in the world are you getting a history lesson right? Well, when your Dad’s name is Albert, you soon learn that this is an important day in the calendar year. Makes more sense now doesn’t it? Not only did we talk about this day growing up, but with our second son’s middle name Albert, we also talk about November 15th in our home.

When Daryl found out that he was going to have heart surgery, it originally was set for November 14th. OK, I guess. But when it got moved to November 15th, I liked the day so much better. I’m thinking as I’m getting older that I’m getting superstitious, and if he had it on St. Albert the Great day, great! The surgery went well and after a long 1 1/2 days in ICU, Daryl was able to get out into regular room yesterday and is feeling so much better. We’re hoping that he’ll get home early next week to recover and I’ll find out more today on that when I see the Doctors.

As for now, I’m just glad that it’s over, and now the only thing left to do is to heal.  I guess there’s two reasons now to celebrate November 15th!
