Kayaking on the Upper Iowa River

What a fun day I had with my friends kayaking on the river on Saturday. We went out for breakfast before we left and spent a good part of Saturday on the river. I never kayaked before so it was a learning experience. Loved It! Absolutely loved it! The river is spring fed so when you are going down the river you’ll see quite a few springs on the side along with small critters that we decided were otters. Not sure if they were, but I think it’s a good guess. If you looked close when you went under the bridges or on the cliffs when you paddled by there were tons of  barn swallow bird nests. The nests are made from mud and in some of the nests you could see someone peeking their head out. On one of the bridges there was probably 75 to 100 birds flying around when you went under it. Kind of cool but also reminded you of the movie ‘Birds’ by Alfred Hitchcock. As long as they didn’t bother us, (or kill us, like in the movie) we were OK with them.

After church on Sunday we went on a bicycle ride with some other friends. At first we thought we would get rained on, but only sprinkles. It’s really getting dry and we do need the rain. There is a chance for rain tonight – I hope it does, but not with a storm! Then off to the movie in Decorah that we’ve been trying to get to and supper at Mabe’s Pizza.

Tomorrow – start scrapping the east side of the barn. Boy the weekends are sure a lot more fun than the weekdays!
