Lent

As you probably know by now we are Catholics, and it is Lent in our church. Other than some special masses and fasting, it seems like Catholics also eat a lot of fish these next couple of weeks. So on Friday night Daryl and I decided to head out and go to a fish fry at a local bar / restaurant. Now there’s some debate between Daryl and I about fish frys. We’ll be married 30 years and I’m saying that we have never gone to a fish fry once. And Daryl is saying that we went to one in our church when we were first married. I’m thinking that I’m right (of course!) but either way, if we did go to a fish fry 30 years ago, it’s about time that we went again. We headed east to Festina, and knew that it was going to be packed when we didn’t really have a spot to park the car once we got there. And how did the fish taste? It was really good. We got there about 1 hour after they started to serve and they were out of potato salad and coleslaw so they just substituted french fries and beans. No big deal at all. The one thing that did strike me kind of funny was that when you walked into their building, outside was a group of guys standing around the fryer. They set up the fryer outside to keep the smell out of the bar.  Good idea. And one nice thing about the fish fry was that we knew maybe 90% of everyone inside. So the amount of time that it took to eat, we took twice as long to actually leave. And we didn’t even get to talk to everyone that we wanted to. Now we’re on a mission to find another fish fry next week. We heard about a couple of them and we’ll just have to choose. But if you’re looking for some good fish – head over to the Zipper, you won’t regret it.
