I have the radio on while I’m at my desk at work, and today I heard an interesting fact. What I learned today was that when you wake up in the morning and tell yourself that you are going to be happy and then smile, you will have a better chance of enjoying the day then if you didn’t do it. OK, so I thought I’d try this theory out on the way home and put it to a test.
So after work I went to the grocery store to pick up some milk and see what other things that we just had to have. While I was in the store, I started to to think about this smiling story and tried it out on a couple of people. The first lady that I saw was someone that I didn’t know in the produce area. I couldn’t get her to look at me and I’m thinking she was kind of scared of me hanging out by her, so that didn’t work so well. The next try was someone that I actually knew in the mac & cheese section. I started to talk to him and he seemed a little nervous at first, but I just smiled at the box of mac & cheese that he was holding and I kept going on my merry way. Then the best part of my grocery adventure happened. I’m pretty sure that the bag boys have to make polite conversation when they’re bringing your groceries to the car, and when we were both walking to my car the bag boy started to talk about the weather. I said that it wasn’t too bad and wasn’t sure why all the schools were letting out early anyway. He said that the roads were getting slippery and that’s probably why. But I proceeded to tell him that they really weren’t slippery at all and they we not even wet. He said that he just couldn’t believe that they weren’t wet and then I told him that the County trucks go out and the stuff that they spray on the roads now never allow the roads to get wet – no matter what the weather is. He said that he didn’t believe that, but I reassured him and when it rains or snows, the roads will keep as dry as it was before the weather started. He said that this was pretty cool and said that it was really a good idea. OK, really? There is nothing that won’t allow a road stay dry when it rains unless it’s a tarp or something. Anyway, as I drove away to head back to the farm, I caught myself with this big goofy smile on my face thinking that some time during the course of the night this kid will actually get that it was a joke and probably feel pretty silly. But for me? The test worked. My little experiment made me smile all the way home.
