Happy Birthday Kyle!

Today is Kyle’s birthday and we had a chance to talk to him a couple of times today. He started his new job yesterday and today was the first day of classes in New York, and it sounds like both are going good for him. His job is waiting tables at a restaurant and he’s also helping with some of their advertising. He said he’s taking pictures of the restaurant for them for the web, and helping to update their site with their menu. I’m sure he’s going to like helping with that because he loves to take pictures. As for his cat, Thor… my friend who was going to pick him up in New York couldn’t do it anymore. What a bummer.  The other lady who is traveling with her wanted to back out of picking him up. So now Thor is living in Canada and I guess we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks. Other news with Kyle is that he’s getting his computer fixed. That’s why we weren’t able to skype with him tonight for this birthday.  He fell down the steps a couple of weeks ago with it and broke the screen. I guess he was multi tasking and wasn’t paying close enough attention to what he was doing. I told him it could have been worse, but he’s thinking that spending the money to fix it is pretty bad in his books. But he should get it back soon and we’re planning to skype this weekend.

As for William, he’s been so busy at school and getting settled that we really haven’t had much a chance to visit with him. He said that his campus was really getting crazy these past couple of days with President Obama visiting. So hopefully things will settle down and he’ll get into a routine and we can set up a time to skype with him. He sent me his address so if I wanted to send him a college box that I could. When I would send them to Kyle he would say that it was as good or better than Christmas. I hope William will feel the same. But now I’ll have to send them to both the boys so I better get going on that!

Did you ever have one of those days when you just can’t focus? Well that was me today. I think it’s because it was Kyle’s birthday.. not sure. But I had my trusty list ready to go this morning and I just couldn’t keep to it. I had good intentions of doing more canning today, but decided to mow lawn instead. I also worked in the garden this afternoon and my onions really kicked it in this summer. I started them from seeds, and I think this was the best year so far. I wasn’t sure when they can be taken out of the ground, but according to the web it said that once the leaves drop over it’s time to think about it. When almost all of the leaves are dropped, you have to stomp the rest of them over and then leave them in the ground for 10 days to 2 weeks. OK, so I don’t really know if this is true or not, but that’s what the web said to do and since I wasn’t sure… that’s what I did.

The onions 10 days ago in my garden

So I pulled them out today and then it said to let them dry in the sun for a day to kill the roots on the bottom. So again, that’s what I did. When it’s all said and done, I have a lot of onions. But I do have a couple of homes that I’m planning on sending them to, and for the rest – I think I might try freezing some of them. I wonder if they can well?

humm... maybe I planted too many this year?

Daryl worked on moving around the heads to his combine after work tonight. I wasn’t sure what he was all doing because he seemed to be driving the machinery around in the yard a lot, but eventually I figured out that he needed to get the bean head on the combine because the beans really started to turn these last couple of days. Soon we’ll find out just how good (or bad) they’ve done this year. Keep your fingers crossed!

two things i vaguely remember about storing garden onions: leave the tops on and tie them up together and let hang in the basement or garage until you need them, or cut the tops off and put in old nylon stockings, knotting after each onion, and hang until ready to use.

the only onions i remember being canned were the tiny pearl onions. you can freeze the big ones, if you chop them up, but the consistency isn’t the same when you thaw them out. good for soup or sauces, though.

looks like you had a nice crop!
