Hazelnut – tree or bush?

I had some bonus points to use at our local nursery from the landscaping that I did this spring, and they had to be used this week. OK, no problem. So I had some errands to do in town and then off to the nursery to check out what I could get with my money coupons. I looked around and just couldn’t find what I thought I wanted, until I found a hazelnut tree. I asked some questions, and the lady who was helping me I think was having a really bad day because she really acted like she wanted to be anywhere but there. So I think she might just have told me whatever I wanted to hear. Pretty sure this is what happened. The one question that I had was ‘Is it a tree or bush’? She said it was a tree, but when I looked at the ones that they were selling at the nursery, none of them looked like a tree. hummm. The next question that I asked was if I needed two ‘trees’ (I think bushes) and she said no. OK, so I would take one. So home I went with my hazelnut thing in my car and I found the perfect spot by the Roadhouse. But you know when you’re looking for a shovel to plant something, you just can’t find one can you. I thought of using the post hole digger, but man that sounded like a lot of work and I was already sweating just standing there looking at the dumb thing. So I watered everything good and I’ll have to wait until Daryl gets home to see if the shovel is in the back of his pickup. I’m kind of excited though of having this little hazelnut bush. It’s supposed to grow up to 8 feet, but the web page that I was looking at said that I needed two to cross pollinate. It also said that it can be either a tree or a bush. I thought so.  Well this year it looks like I’ll be OK with only one, but I’ll have to check into it more for next year.
