Daryl and I went to Grinnell College last night to see the Iowa Ambassadors of Music Concert. William is singing with this group, and what they do is to have a farewell concert the night before they leave on their tour of Europe.
It was just amazing.
The kids were all dressed up and have been practicing now for the past couple of days at the college. We ended up getting their early, but that was OK. That way we were able to get a pretty good seat. Then the kids started to come around and they were all excited. It was fun to see William and then to meet some of the kids that he got to know these last couple of days. I knew that they were having a good time because when I asked how it was going – the reply back was ‘Great’! Not ….. OK, or Good.. but Great! It turned out that William was part of a trio that was going to have solos in the beginning of one of the songs. When they sang it, I swear that Daryl and I grew about another 2 inches taller sitting in our chairs. But all the kids in the choir and band did a fantastic job and soon the concert was over. We had to make a Walmart run because they needed some hangers yet, but that wasn’t a big deal. They had a store in the town and soon we were back in the dorms. William was sharing his room with one other kid, but when we got closer to his room we found out that the room that had maybe 2 or 3 kids in it before, now had at least 8 or 9 kids in it. It was around 11:00 when we left, and one of the kids had his bus leaving for his flight at 1:15 am. He decided that he wouldn’t go to bed and just stay up and sleep on the plane. William’s and some of his friend’s had to leave at 6:15, so I’m thinking that they also were planning on staying up all night. A good clue of this was when we were leaving and walking outside, we could still hear these boys just hooping it up and having a good time in the room upstairs. So as we were making the 2 hour drive home I was thinking what a good feeling as a parent it was to not only be proud of your son or daughter, but how nice it was to be proud of a whole room of kids. Now they’re off to London to start their adventure.
