The end of an era

Well it’s official.

Daryl and I no longer have fuses that we use for our house. We used to have everything wired to fuses, but when we remodeled we wanted to change everything over – but must have missed the dryer. When we remodeled, we told the contractors that in the kitchen we wanted most of the outlets to have their own breaker. I’m sure it didn’t matter to them, but it sure mattered to me. Why? Well, in the past when we would be having company coming over, wouldn’t you know it – we’d blow a fuse. And then we always tried to have extras in the house, but one time, we had a house full of guests and Daryl was on his way to town to see if he could get some more. If we blew a fuse, that usually meant that the stove didn’t work and that was a bad thing with a bunch of people in your house that were expecting to eat. We even had gotten pretty creative over the years. We’d run an extension cord out the dryer outlet to the garage outlet so we wouldn’t have trouble. Maybe not the best look we’ve done before, but no one complained. Now I’m sure that no older house would be wired for 6 crockpots and a roaster…. with the oven on also, but that’s what I was doing.  So what happened yesterday was that I was doing laundry and went down in the basement. It smelled like something was hot, so I thought it must be our dehumidifier and I unplugged it. But the more I thought about it, I was thinking that the dehumidifier was only maybe 2 years old and that seemed a little odd. So back down in the basement I went and started to smell around the freezer and the back basement. Now I know that my eyesight is going, along with other things as the years go by, but the one thing that I still have is a pretty good nose! The only thing that I thought was kind of odd was when I was by the fuse box, it was making noise. Kind of like maybe sparking noises. Not good! I think I found out what was the problem. I hurried upstairs and shut off the dryer and had to figure out what to do with those clothes. But better than maybe starting a fire!  We ended up calling in an electrician today and now he rewired it to the breaker box, so no more fuses in the Kuehner home! I think I’m going to keep the fuses that we took out. I know that I’m supposed to be cleaning the house, but it just seems like fuses are such a reminder of the past that I just can’t throw them away. Maybe in another week I’ll feel different about them? I guess we’ll see.

It's the end of the road for these guys in our house
