A Farmer

Today when I brought dinner to Daryl in the field I was thinking about why people choose to be farmers. I mean there has to be an easier job and without all the stress. They worry in the Spring that it’s too wet and then spend the whole Summer watching the weather and hoping that we get rain without the storms. They worry about insects and mold on their crops and how many times they’ll need to spray their fields for it. Then there’s the machinery, they worry when it breaks down and how much more money they’ll have to put into it to keep it running. When fall comes around they patiently (or impatiently) stand by their tractors and combines waiting to get into the fields to see how their crops turned out. But when I was standing there waiting for Daryl, I could hear the crickets in the field and every once in awhile there would be a small breeze going by. You can smell the dry crops and then I realized that this is why you would choose this job. It’s spending a sunny day in your combine and seeing how all your hard work turned out. It’s having the tractor with grain wagons in the field with the crop that you just took off the land. Now, not every day is going to be like today. Trust me on this! We heard last night that corn went down over a dollar a bushel – which is a lot when you’re going to sell it. And there’ll be nights when everything you own will break down just when you want to use it. But the good times must out way the bad times because it seems once a farmer you are always a farmer.

William worked on changing out the tire and rim on the hay wagon. It looks like we’re having a Wagon Festival on our farm and it would be nice to get some of these put away where they belong. But when he was taking the nuts off a couple of the bolts broke off. So we’ll have to get some bolts to be able to fix this. It looks like a next week project.

Dessert for tonight was a new recipe – Candy Bar Cheesecake. I think I’ll make this one again and it’s such a simple recipe. What makes it so simple is that if you like Snickers you put them in the cheesecake. But if you like Peanut Butter Cups then you would add those instead. So whatever is your favorite candy bar, that’s what you put on top of the Oreo crust.
