Busy Day

I sure felt that today was a productive day for me. You know sometimes you have days when you think you can’t seem to get anything done? Well this was not one of those days. I was able to get a double batch of  beef jerky made, the clothes hampers are cleaned out and the laundry is all done, I picked up the record number of pails of apples that fell yesterday in that crazy wind – 10 pails!, took off all the screens off the windows, made a couple of batches of salsa, got the kitchen cleaned up, mowed lawn for a couple of hours, finished painting white and painted a gallon of red paint, and then tried to pick apples before it gets too cold. I wanted to get more picked before we went to the football game tonight but there was no one around to help me, So I just picked what I could and if they freeze… they freeze.
If you are a canner you know what I mean when I say that you get used to the ‘ping’ when it seals. I really thought today that one of my salsa jars broke when it was in the water bath. I heard the usual pings but then I heard a really funny one. I thought to myself, Oh No! Because when a jar breaks in the water bath you have a mess to clean up. But it turned out that nothing broke and I sure was glad for that. All the jars sealed so tomorrow I’ll mark the date on top of them and put them down in the cellar with the rest of the canned jars.

Getting out the big kettles today

You’ll have to check out the cattle shed below. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. WOW doesn’t this shed look good? I still have to paint in between them yet and then this project can be checked off the list.

the cattle shed looks fantastic! you sure did a great job on all the outbuildings this summer.

i remember when i was little and my grandmother would can well into the late hours of the day. the ping was one of the neatest sounds, and i’ll never forget it. when i canned things myself, hearing the ping always made me smile because it brought back fond memories of my childhood. thanks for reminding me of that sweet memory.

I’m right there with you!!! I LOVE to hear those cans “ping” on the counter. I always seem to leave my newly canned produce on the counter for a few days–admiring my work and it feels like a trophy for the week!

That is exactly what I do also! I leave them there on the counter for awhile until everyone in the house has seen them. And every time I would walk by I could feel myself smiling. It feels like such an accomplishment.
