Monday and the traveling salesman

Now normally I’m not that fond of Monday’s, but for this week I can honestly say that I love it! See I took a vacation day today and Daryl also has the day off. And then to top that – both boys are also home with their girlfriends. Yup, it is indeed a really good day!

I originally took the day off because I didn’t know if we were going to be able to have our family Christmas Sunday night and if that wasn’t going to work, well Monday was next in line. But we did have a late Christmas at our house on Sunday, so Monday morning was spent getting stuff organized and then later on Kyle and Kelcie headed to Des Moines and William and Jude went to her parents house. So the afternoon was pretty much free for Daryl and I. And guess how we spent the rest of the day? If you guessed with a traveling salesperson – you were correct! I was upstairs cleaning and then I heard the door bell ring. Now Daryl and I were just talking this morning that the FedEx guy was going to go through withdrawals at our house now that Christmas is over – but I knew that William was waiting for one more gift. So when the door bell rang I didn’t think much of it until I kept hearing a conversation in our kitchen – and much longer than I was sure that the FedEx guy wanted to have. So down the steps I go to investigate. And in our kitchen stood a guy with a large bag that had pictures in it. This salesman was traveling the area trying to sell farm pictures. Having someone travel around selling farm pictures is almost as common as the gate guy driving around selling gates. I’m guessing that some people haven’t really heard of either one of these things – but for us on the farm it’s not that uncommon. So now the dance begins. How much does he want for the picture? Well, it’s been about 30 years since we bought a picture of the farm and the picture he was trying to sell was actually even a good one. Sometimes when they want you to buy a picture the house is cut out or it’s the worst year for crops in that decade and your farm is surrounded by brown corn, you know.. bad things on a picture. But I had to hand it to him. The picture looked good! Well he wasn’t someone who just started to sell these pictures because it took a lot to have him tell me just actually how much he wanted for it. But little did he know that I also watch the Pawn Stars on TV and I’ve seen how the Old Man and Rick operate, so I know how this whole thing works! So after quite a bit of haggling and Daryl even left the room at one point, we did come to an agreement for price. I don’t know if he was so happy with it or not, but it was a fair price and I was OK with it. And just as I was heading back upstairs I could hear the door bell again. I thought, just what does this guy want now? And then just as I was coming back down the stairs I saw it was the FedEx guy.

It’s Christmas time!

And what a great day!

Mom’s Christmas was starting at noon for anyone who could make it for dinner, so around 11:00 I headed over to see what I could help with. She had pretty much everything under control and to be honest I might have just been more in the way than I was helping! It didn’t take long and then all of our family started to roll in. At first we try to catch the door and help because people are coming in with presents and food and kids. And with two new babies in our family this year – that’s always fun! Needless to say when those families came, well the babies are usually snatched by someone right away. It’s kind of funny how that works isn’t it? There was a lot of conversation about just how many of our family actually were at Mom’s this year and the amount was around 50.  What a great turnout! All the grandchildren were there and we were missing only one great grandchild.

The little kids get their gifts first and then off they go to play!

The little kids get their gifts first and then off they go to play!

This is the first year that her Christmas wasn’t scheduled right on Christmas and I’m thinking she kind of scored! Tons of food and tons of fun! After eating literally a couple of times and getting way too many gifts, we did the White Elephant exchange. If you’re not familiar with this exchange, what you do is you bring a gift and into a pile it goes. First you draw numbers then we have to discuss the rules. Seriously sometimes the rules take a long time to discuss because they kind of change year to year. And did they change this year? You bet! But I think this was the best year for the rules that we used. This years rules were that we started with the number above Ma and then kept going until we got around to Ma again. Everyone can either pick a gift from the pile in the middle or steal someone else’s gift, but the gift can only be stolen twice. Now there’s a lot of funny business going on within each family and there are game plans discussed I think before they come to Christmas. But that’s what makes the game fun! And how did our family turn out? Well let’s just say it wasn’t our first rodeo either 🙂 (Thanks Jude!)DSCN9411 With Ma being the last one, her rules were a little different. She could take anyone’s gift in the room, no matter how many times it was stolen. And did she steal someone’s gift – You bet! Well the game eventually was over and out the food comes again to eat again before we all headed back home. Her house got picked up and dishes were done and soon her house didn’t look like 50 people invaded it for the day!

Then back home our family went to have our Christmas. It was around 7:30 and we all went to put on sweat pants and t shirts. We said that we wanted to get more comfortable, but I’m thinking it’s because we all probably ate too much at Ma’s! We exchanged gifts within our family and opened up Santa’s gifts for the boys. Santa gifts are still kept a secret in our family.   Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I call our kids ‘the boys’ ??

At the end of the night and with Kyle’s new stereo playing some retro music in the background – I headed to the bathtub to soak for a little while. When I finally crawled into bed and pulled up the covers to go to sleep,  I was going over the details of the day in my mind. Now I know that I had this dumb grin on my face just thinking on how well it all turned out. I think getting ready for Christmas is pretty much like football teams getting ready for the Superbowl. You rally your team when the season begins, you help each other when one of your team looses faith in the final goal, there are some days when you’re sore and tired and not sure you can keep going on, and then the final day is here! You look back at all the preparation that you did and no matter on the outcome on the final day – it’s all OK. It was just getting there with your team that made it all worth while.DSCN9401

Very busy day today

Daryl and William took off early this morning to head to Chicago to pick up Kyle who was flying in from Korea and also to pick up his friend who was flying in from New York. And while they were gone all I wanted to do was to keep my head on straight and plunge forward. I had a lot to do today and needed to get everything done on my list. No backing out on today’s stuff – it’s crunch time baby!!

First things first, I made my list. Then put some laundry in the washer and started to work on the dishes. Now I really wish I would have counted how many times the dish washer was used today. I was putting dirty dishes into it and the inside was still warm most of the day! Thank goodness for dishwashers right? Well I worked most of the day in the kitchen and one of the things that I did was trying to figure out just how in the world to make these two huge turkey breasts that I had. My roaster book (which should be the law) said that it should only take about 2 1/2 hours each. OK, I’ll put one in and then when that one is done – in will go the second one. Well let’s just say that the old roaster book lied! It ended up taking around 5 hours to get to the correct temperature. At first I was really worried that I might be getting it too dry – but then I wasn’t so worried about that and I just wanted them cooked. I also made a couple of batches of candy for some platters that I’ll need and made a couple pumpkin rolls for William. The next thing to make was some breakfast bake to put in the refrigerator for the morning. Now to make some beef jerky. I knew that I would need quite a bit, so I had made a 6 x batch. Now any odor of pine from our Christmas tree is so gone and we’ve got all our cats and the neighbor cats just hanging around our front porch tonight. The smell of beef jerky brings them in for miles. I made a mad dash to bring back recycling and then off to the grocery store for those last minute items. The kid who was helping me with loading my groceries into my car must not have realized that I only gave myself 45 minutes to get to town and back. Yea, he was just chatting away and so I ended up helping him load my groceries in the car to move him along. I’m guessing that he wasn’t so impressed with my ‘helping’. Back home to finish up a couple of things and then to get the floor steamed. I haven’t used our floor steamer for awhile and let’s just say that maybe I should use it more often. Chores got done and a couple of more gifts wrapped. Now it’s almost midnight and I’m off to finish the last of the gifts for tomorrow’s Christmas at Ma’s. Daryl and the kids should be home around 1:30 in the morning so I need to get busy so I’m done by the time they get home!

The photo of the day is one that William sent from the airport. His caption was “Look who I found” Love it!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you! What a couple of great days we’ve had so far and our family Christmas and my Mom’s hasn’t even happened yet!

We started the celebration out last night by going to our church for the Christmas mass. Now we knew that we had to get to the church early enough to get a good seat and even though the church was packed when the Mass started, there was still plenty of seats available once they got out the folding chairs in the back. So while we were in church we were behind a couple that had two little kids. The mass was long even for me and after a couple of comments that I could hear from these two kids – well they were thinking the same thing. So as the mass was going, I caught the look that the Mom gave the Dad when the smallest kid wouldn’t sit still. For some reason I completely forgot about ‘the look’ between parents. Now I’m sure that Daryl and I did it and I’m guessing that there are a lot of you reading this know exactly what I’m talking about. So once I noticed that these two in front of us were doing this it was hard not to notice more of these looks as the mass was going on. There was the look that they gave each other when the first kid had to be taken out to go to the bathroom, and then the second look when they just got back to the pew and the second kid had to go to the bathroom. There was the slight look to the Dad from the Mom after she brushed her hand over the one kids forehead and then a more worried look back when the Dad put his hand on the kids head and kind of grimaced back to the Mom. Now the next look was from me to Daryl when I was watching this whole thing go down and thinking if this kid gets sick, I’m going to get sick too! I’m such a social puker! But no one got sick and soon the service was over. Now if you’re wondering if I got anything out of mass or just watched this couple, I really did get something out of the Mass. But I must admit it was hard to overlook all the sign language that this couple was giving each other with just only looks. Back home we went and I needed to make two more candy platters before we left for the night. We were heading to my brother and sister in laws for a Christmas Eve party. This tradition has started only in the past couple of years and it’s a good one to keep going. There is a lot of food, drinks, games, and laughing that goes on! This morning was Christmas morning and it was kinda strange for our family. The reason that I say this is because this year is the first year that we’re not having Christmas until Sunday night when Kyle and his friend will be home. But no big deal and we skyped with Kyle early this morning to wish him a Merry Christmas,  and we were able to hang out with William most of the day which was really nice. Now the day is almost over and I’m making a list because I’m going shopping early tomorrow morning. Not really to get the good deals after Christmas, but to pick up a couple of things and get some groceries. We’ll have the kids for about a week coming and going and I’m thinking that our cupboards need to be replenished.

The photo of the day is what was on our lawn this afternoon. I guess the dogs didn’t get the memo that we’re celebrating Christmas a little later this year and they are now on the NAUGHTY list! It looks like they might have dug a new hole (in the background) to bury their coal in that they should be expecting from Santa! DSCN9344

From our family to yours – I hope you had a very Merry Christmas!

Christmas is almost here

Oh man Christmas is almost here and I still have a lot to do! Now I’m trying to be realistic and know that not everything that I want to get done will get done. But I’m still hoping that most of it will. So after getting my hair cut tonight, I hurried through the grocery store and picked up a few things and headed home. I wanted to work on some more candy platters and I knew that meant making more candy. After getting my kitchen work done, I worked on moving the Christmas gifts one last time. I haven’t gotten them wrapped yet and I swear that if I would have just wrapped them from the beginning, well it would have saved me a ton of work moving them from one room to another while we’re cleaning! But I figure I’ll have some time coming up these next couple of days and it won’t be an issue. I’ve got just one question –  Is tomorrow really Christmas Eve already?

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree….

I’ve been working on decorating the Christmas tree these past couple of days and tonight I finally had a chance to get out the ornaments and start hanging them up. I did get most of them hung but I still needed some garland or something. This tree is kind of lacking in some excitement. DSCN9336The reason I haven’t hung any garland is because I keep thinking what the tree would look like with popcorn garland strung instead. OK, I know that this is a big job and honestly I feel like I’m about two weeks behind now! But I’m just saying it would look pretty cool with the popcorn. So while I was working on the tree and hanging the ornaments, I was wondering just what actually makes the tree the best Christmas tree ? Is it the popcorn garland or the height of the tree? I don’t think so. I’m thinking it’s when you look at the tree and you see all the mix matched ornaments – you remember the Christmas’s from the past. Yup, that’s what I think. So as I’m looking at the tree and I see the brass ornaments that we got when we were first married and some more the boys had got when they were born, I see a couple of home made ornaments that we were given, or the ones that the kids made when they were in grade school. But are you wondering which one is my favorite? Well my favorite is a little star that I macramed when I was a lot younger. I think I must have been around 16? and was really into macrame. Not only at the time was I working on the large lamp’s that hung from the ceiling – but I also made a couple of the little stars for Christmas. Now who would have thought that after all these years that this would bring back so many memories for me? Well, when your’e 16 I’m guessing that it wasn’t something that I was thinking about. Boys maybe – but Christmas memories 35 years from then? Yea, I’m thinking not!   But I can almost see myself sitting in my parents back parlor with the macrame board on my lap just working away.  Kinda cool that something so simple can make you smile isn’t it? What a great tradition a Christmas tree is. DSCN9340

In the Zone man!

Whew what a day! I mean I wanted to get quite a bit done and well let me just say ‘oh yea’  I got most of it done. And I even got out of bed Late! I didn’t wake up until around 8:00 this morning and by the time 8:30 rolled around,  I knew that I better get up and get some stuff done. Now sometimes this works on the weekend – and well sometimes this doesn’t. But for today it did! First things first – review my list that I made last night. I needed a couple of Christmas cards still wrote out even though it’s cutting it pretty close. Next thing was to order the rest of the gifts from the internet. Yup, cutting this also too close right? But what I ordered had a 2 day shipping so it should be OK. Well on to paying bills and calling the cell phone company why our bill just seems to keep going up and up. What I found out today is that there is around $22 just in taxes on the phone bills alone. Now that’s just plain crazy! After a couple of loads of laundry and cleaning our bedroom, I moved on to watching a TV show that I like. Now I didn’t say that I wanted to work all day did I? The show is one that I’m kind of addicted to and I watch it on Netflix so I can miss all the commercials. Thank Goodness! After I limited my TV show watching time to 45 minutes, I’m back in the kitchen. I want to have some candy made so we can drop it off at our friends house yet early this week. Now I knew what I wanted to make and found myself not making any of it just yet. Do you know what I made instead? Well I ordered some beeswax the other day and I was just dying to make some lip balm with it. Yea, maybe kind of a sad life that I’m that excited about this beeswax huh? I’ve never done anything with beeswax or honestly even talked about beeswax before so when I went to order it I wasn’t sure what to buy. What I bought was organic food grade so it should be just fine. The reviews were good on it, so I gave it a try. Now if it wasn’t ‘good’ I wouldn’t have a clue 🙂  First things first. Do some research on which recipe that I’m going to use. Well there’s like 85 billion recipes for lip balm (who would have guessed?) and I chose the easiest one. The recipe takes three ingredients, coconut oil, vitamin E, and beeswax. I had the coconut oil in my kitchen so that wasn’t a big deal. I had bought the vitamin E earlier from the Coop store because I knew that it’s used in lip balm, and I had the beeswax now. Yup, I was ready to go. DSCN9322I put some of the vitamin E on the bottom of my glass bowl DSCN9323and added 2 Tbsp of coconut oil. DSCN9325Then I grated 1 Tbsp of  the beeswax DSCN9326and put the whole thing in the microwave for 30 seconds.DSCN9327 If it is sounding easy, well it was up to this point. After 3o seconds I took it out and stirred it and put it back in. After a couple of times doing this, everything was melted and that was that. Way easy. Now I know my container is not the right one and it’s just in a bowl for now, but I didn’t know even if this was going to work at all.DSCN9329 I’m going to see what I can find for a smaller container and melt it back down again. It should work and if doesn’t – well I’m only out 3 Tbsp of ingredients. No big deal. After my kitchen experiment on the lip balm  I started to make some candy and treats for my baskets. First thing was the almond coated pretzels, DSCN9330then peanut clusters,DSCN9331 and then two batches of caramelsDSCN9332The first batch of caramel was done so fast in this one kettle and the second one took about an hour longer. Same recipe – just different kettles. The kettles that I use are old pressure cooker kettles so you would think there wouldn’t be that much difference now would you? Well, the difference is about an hour to be exact. The caramel tasted the same so that extra hour didn’t make it better or worse, just a lighter caramel. The dark caramel will be left plain and the lighter caramel will have pecans in it and dipped in chocolate tomorrow.DSCN9333Then guess what I did? Well Daryl fixed an outlet on the garage today that was painted over a long time ago, so after I greased up my lips with my new lip balm, out I go with my lights and decorated the garage. Now I’m done with putting up the lights because I know that soon I’ll have to take them all back down!  After supper and getting the kitchen cleaned, it’s time to wrap some presents and get ready for work tomorrow. It was one of those days like when you were a kid and the Sunday lasted a long time. Now even though today is the December solstice and it marks the longest night and shortest day of the year – I’m thinking I was in a different zone or something because it felt like a very long day to me.

And the photo of the day is a platter that William brought home from one of the Christmas’s he was at this weekend. Yum!DSCN9334

My coat is finally here!

I had ordered a coat back on November 3rd and was wondering when or even if I was ever going to see it. Now you have to admit that almost 7 weeks does seem like a long time right? I mean I order things off of Amazon and can get them in two days! But I’ve got quite a few coats that are hanging in the closet so I’m not going to be outside in the cold without a coat or anything – but I was really anxious to see this one. So while I was in the kitchen this afternoon I saw someone pull into the yard and honk their horn. This is not something that normally happens and I noticed it was the mailman. But who were they honking at? Surely not our dogs. This is a picture that I took of Reno this morning hanging out in the yard. DSCN9319Our dogs usually fight over this dog bed and the winner drags it to where they want to lay down and stay there because they know if they get up the other dog will come by and grab it. And they don’t want to give up the bed to the other dog. So I guessed the mailman was honking at me to come out. OK and not a problem. Then I thought to myself – could it be the coat? Sure enough it was! When I was opening the box it was just as I had hoped it to be and was really pleased. But as I was taking it out of the box I noticed a tag hanging on it.DSCN9320 What in the world is this? The tag said that the coat had “Vegan Fur” on it. Hummm….Vegan Fur. Now I have never heard of this before and off to the computer to find out just exactly what this is. As far as I know it’s just a fancy way to say “Fake Fur”.  I do have to admit though, Vegan Fur does sound so much more expensive and current lingo that Fake Fur does. But who cares how it’s wrote – the coat fits and I’m in a happy place.

The picture of the day is that of Santa Kyle at his school’s Christmas program. It looks like everyone is having a really good time! 10872610_737476385034_814803358_n
