My drive home tonight

Have you ever been driving and then all of a sudden think to yourself ‘what the heck is going on?’

Well if you haven’t had this discussion with yourself I guess I don’t know what to say. This kinda happens to me a lot 🙂

And that’s exactly what happened to me tonight after work. I was driving home and all of a sudden I realized that there were things on the road. Now at first I wasn’t quite sure what they were. So I’m driving and wondering what I was seeing and then I realized just what it was. They were Monarch Butterflies all over the highway. Seriously how cool is that? But then when I realized what they were I kinda panicked. I didn’t want to kill them or even hurt them. The reason is because I was at a meeting the other day and found out that the Monarch Butterfly is only about a breath away from being on the endangered species list and because a billion of the Monarch’s population has vanished – we need to pay attention. So now that they are on the road I’m trying my best to be careful not to hit them or the oncoming cars. Which isn’t a good idea either!

I ended up stopping when I got to my gravel road to take a picture of the butterflies and a local farmer was driving by and also stopped to see what I was doing. I’m pretty sure that it’s not a common thing for someone to stop and take a picture of a butterfly on the highway/gravel road – well other than probably me doing it. While I was visiting with him he said that his yard is so full of them that he had to be careful where he was driving when he left.  And do you know the coolest thing was that while we were talking they were flying around us and trying to land. Yea, pretty cool.

We talked about a time around 10 to 15 years ago when these Monarchs were migrating down south to Mexico for the winter and how lucky our neighborhood was when they filled all our trees with literally bunches of the butterflies. I took a picture of this when it happened (shocked right?) but the picture just couldn’t capture how it looked.

So here is my pictures of the butterflies that I took on the highway on my way home tonight and I’m sure hoping that there will be many more of these Monarchs to come yet this fall.20150910_152624_resized20150910_152645_resized

Fall in coming

Now how can I tell that Fall is coming?

Well I can tell how close we are to Fall by the amount of machinery in the yard. Now tonight we have the combine and Daryl has taken the corn head off of it and is ready to start thinking about combining beans. We’ve gotten around 3 inches of rain these past few days and that will finish off the having the beans fill their pods and the corn to also finish off. But the best part of it is that we should get a 4th hay crop!

Chuck Wagon Races

I’ve never been to the Chuck Wagon Races before and neither has Daryl so that’s sure sounds like a good reason to go doesn’t it?

OK I first need to tell you the history behind the Chuck Races. I need to do this only because I had no clue so I thought I better share it in case you didn’t know either.

So here it goes – when the West was young and just getting started the cattle were driven to market or from one range to the other. So it was necessary to have the chuckwagons hurry from one camp to the next to get the next meal ready for the cowboys. Makes sense right?

When the morning breakfast was done, the chuckwagon crew had to clean up, pack up, and then go at a fast pace to have enough time to unload the wagon, collect firewood, start fires, get water and prepare the evening meal. Whew!

And since they traveled through hostile territory, it was necessary for part of the crew to ride next to the wagon in case of an attack. The chuckwagons, food and equipment was hard to replace in the west at the time.

The rules of the Chuckwagon races that we went to says that the wagons need to be weighing at least 1325 lbs. with the driver in the seat. The wagon has a canvas cover and a flap which extends at least 8 feet from the rear of the wagon with poles attached to form a tent. They also have this stove that’s smoking on the ground that needs to be picked up and put into the wagon at the beginning of the race.

And rules? There sure seemed to be a lot of them. If you bumped the barrel or didn’t get on your horse, or even if you were one of the riders and wasn’t in the correct placement when you went over the finish line you were deducted points! Holy Smokes! I guess these guys (and gals) knew all the rules and we were there just to have fun and watch.

OK, now that you know why and how the races are done here are some pictures of the races on Monday in Nashua at the Big Four Fair.

Cowboys getting the wagons and horses set up for the race. The horses would do the jump up and try to run thing that would have scared the dickens out of me!

IMG_3359

And they are off! They have their smoking stove in the wagon and now to do a tour around the barrels. It looks like all the cowboys are on their horses which is good!

Here is a picture of two of the contestants coming down the finish line. I’m not sure where all their riders are? Looks like some points will be given for that 🙂

IMG_3361

And once the races were over what did we do? Well you can’t go to a fair and not enjoy an Elephant Ear can you? These Elephant Ears are deep fried batter topped with sugar. Now maybe not the most healthy but honestly probably one of the best things that you can eat at a fair.

The picture of the day is that of one of the riders. I think the announcer said that this guy had to ride beside the front wheel of the wagon. And since a storm went through last night, well the track was kinda muddy which in turn made him pretty muddy! IMG_3355

Sunday storms

Since we were gone yesterday, today was a day to catch up on the weekend stuff.

And what did we do first? Well the cows decided to go for a walk about last night and when they got busted by the neighbors calling us, we knew that they needed some attention today.

So Daryl spent the morning grinding feed

The bin is getting pretty empty. Good thing its close to harvest time!

and bringing in a fresh hay bale for them. DSCN8252Now you have to wonder if they really was just bored and went for a walk or if they knew that if they got out that they were going to get a bunch more attention and it was all part of the overall scheme of theirs. Who knows – but if that was the reason, well it was successful!

And for me? Well I fell for their trap and they each got a couple of big red delicious apples. Good thing they were on sale this week at the grocery store!

I also tried a new thing with my tomatoes this year. Of course I saw it on the Internet and wanted to give it a try. Because my tomatoes were planted a little later this year, I’m just starting to have them come in. And I don’t know if you have this problem, but of course they don’t all get ripe at once so you can get a couple of tomatoes one day and than a couple of tomatoes the next day. What I did was to cut them into quarters and roast them in the oven instead of trying to keep them to can. I also had some peppers that I needed to use and some cherry tomatoes so into the pan and oven they went. I drizzles olive oil and salted and peppered the whole bunch and that was about it. When they smelled done (maybe about 30 minutes?) I took them out to cool.DSCN8251The oddest thing is that I put them in the food processor to mix up the skins of the tomatoes and then used it in chili it almost made it too thick. You know when you use fresh tomatoes it can get pretty watery? Well when I used the roasted tomatoes I could literally stand a serving spoon up in the middle of the chili without it falling down. Score! So my next adventure is to roast some more and use it in some salsa and see if I can have the same luck. But with this many tomatoes in my garden on one plant and with the rest of the plants looking pretty similar – I’m guessing that I’ll have some to work with even if it doesn’t turn out so good the first time 🙂DSCN8258

Later in the afternoon we spent it at a Birthday party and then our plans for the night was to head over to the Fair and go to an outside concert. Well after the party the sky was looking pretty unsettled so we went home for awhile to see if the bad weather was going to blow over.

There was no such luck on it blowing over anytime soon and I honestly don’t ever remember having so much lightning going on in a storm in my life! There was at least two or three lightnings that would light up the sky at once and of course that meant for us to get all the vehicles into the sheds because you just never know what was going to happen. Some of the vehicles went into the machine shed, others in the garage, and with William and Jude visiting some of the cars ended up in the Roadhouse. But with the chance of hail, it’s a good thing to be safe and get everything under cover. Our concert ended up getting cancelled and that’s a good thing. The storm lasted until around 10:30 ish and sitting on metal bleachers out in the open probably wasn’t the safest thing to do with the storm!

But it did make it a good night for sleeping. There was the sound of the rain outside and with some thunder now in the distance it was kinda calming in a weird kind of way.

The picture of the day is one of the lightning that William captured tonight. DSC_0109

Skydiving Saturday!

We went skydiving today! And what a rush it was.

I’ve been talking about going skydiving for quite some time now and so my friend and I decided to set a time and a date and do it. And when we were skyping with the kids last weekend and I was talking about it, William has always wanted to go and since it worked in his schedule he was also going. We were excited!

So it’s the morning of the Big Day! Car was packed with some camp chairs if we need them, a camera, some snacks and drinks, and a whole lot of adrenaline!

First things first. We met my friend in a nearby town and because we were meeting William at the airport we started to head south after picking up my friend. It was about a 3 hour trip and there wasn’t a dull time in the car talking about what we were going to do for our pictures and talking pretty confident about the whole thing.

Our appointment was for 11:00 and we pulled into the business at 10:45 so it was going good so far and William wasn’t far behind us.

Next thing to do is to check in. IMG_3315 (1)IMG_3314 (1)Well after about a million pages to sign and initial that basically no one is going to sue anyone – it was time to head to the training room for a video. Now my take away from this video is that you do not have to go through the jump if you don’t want to. OK, there was probably more to the video but that’s all what I heard. Oh yea, that you can not sue anyone if you die. But we were anxious to get started and was hoping that this video thing wasn’t going to take too long.

So now was the waiting game. We had to wait our turn and with finding out that they were short handed today it was one of those times when you tried to be very patient but still are about coming out of your skin with excitement. Good thing we had brought some chairs along, they sure came in handy today.

As we watched the first groups of people I honestly couldn’t believe that we were there. I mean we’ve talked about it for years and now we were actually going to do this. Well we were hoping anyway that we wouldn’t chicken out.

And we laughed while we were waiting because Daryl made the comment that he watched so many times the parachutes being wrapped up that he almost could do it by himself. Now I do really trust Daryl for pretty much everything in our lives – but I think packing a parachute for me, well that’s kinda pushing it don’t you think?

After waiting for quite awhile they called our names. We jumped up out of our seats like we were in grade school and we just got called to the blackboard. We were going to get fitted for our harnesses and hopefully get our 20 to 30 minute training that they mentioned when we signed up. First thing was to get instructed on how to learn how to get out of the airplane and jump. IMG_3318Sounds easy right? Now I don’t know if they thought that we knew what we were doing or if we just looked hopeless and they wanted to get our turn moving, but the training that my friend and I got was about 2 to 3 minutes. But I’m thinking I can remember this. Feet out the airplane door, pull feet back under the plane, hold onto your straps, jump out of the plane, get tapped on the shoulder, bend knees, arch back, head back, spread arms, look to the left, smile. OK got it!

And William was going to go after us and he said that his friends told him to remember everything that’s going on when you jump because it goes so fast. I thought to myself the only way to do this is to relax.

OK, feet out the airplane door, pull feet back under the plane, relax, hold onto your straps, jump out of the plane, relax, remember what you see and feel, get tapped on the shoulder, bend knees, arch back, head back, remember what you see and feel and relax spread arms, look to the left, and smile.

Next step on our adventure was to get on the airplane. Now I’ve been on my share of airplanes before but holy cow I’ve never been on an airplane like this! As us 4 sat on the floor of the plane with no room to spare and with small windows around us without much walls, I seriously felt like I was on a bomber airplane or something. And as the plane was going down the runway and into the air – we were off! Here we go! I knew that I couldn’t help smiling and after looking at my pictures later I was pretty much right with that statement. It was so very very cool though! The airplane was loud and I’m sure that the guys had harnesses on (I hope) because the one side of the airplane was pretty much gone and had a tarp on it to keep us in. Now were climbing and climbing up into the sky and you could feel the air getting colder as you climbed higher. Then as we’re watching we’re way above the clouds. Awesome!

DCIM104GOPRO

Having a good time in the airplane

My guide said that he was going to lean out to see where we’re at to help the pilot know where we were going to jump so I was kinda ready when the tarp went up and because he leaned outside the plane … well so did I. I didn’t really notice that I was nervous about this until I started to get a cramp in my one leg because I had it braced against the wall of the plane. No way in heck I’m going to go out that plane sideways. I’m just saying!

After he found the best spot he said for me to swing my legs out the door and I’ll kind of hang there.

DCIM104GOPRO

Swinging my legs out of the airplane – 7000 feet above the earth!

When I said that he was going to tap me when I should bend my knees, arch my back and the rest of my training he said no. That I should do this right away. Holy Crap! OK, bend knees, relax, have fun, remember, arch back, breath, look to the left.

DCIM104GOPRO

Waiting for the first leap of faith

Oh heck – Just JUMP!

DCIM104GOPRO

Jump!

WOW!   That’s about all that I can say about that. I’m glad that William said to remember what it felt like because otherwise I think it might be too overwhelming. To me how it felt was like you were weightless and could see the whole earth in an instant. Now granted you couldn’t really see the whole earth, but while sitting outside the plane at 7000 feet and falling at the speed of 120 mph well it kind of felt like the whole earth.

DCIM104GOPRO

What a great feeling!

DCIM104GOPRO

Just hanging out above the clouds

The air was cool and it was really loud. You could feel any skin that you might have just flopping around in the air and I thought to myself that that’s not going to look too good on the pictures. When I was thinking about this it made me laugh and I guess I was pretty successful at the relaxing part of the whole thing. Now I don’t know how long we free fell but soon the parachute opened up and bam up into the sky we went. The air noise suddenly stopped and there was absolutely no noise at all. The air got warmer and it was really peaceful. My guide was called Junkyard dog and I think he could be a lot of fun. On the way down we did quite a bit of spinning which I absolutely loved and honestly I would have flipped upside down if it was allowed. I was pretty nervous about the landing but we landed just like butter! I’m telling you … butter!IMG_3335 My friend landed soon after I did and we looked at each other and said we did it!

Next was William’s turn and he looked like a pro. Getting fittedHis airplane was even smaller than ours which I couldn’t believe IMG_3343and I was anxious and excited for him to jump and see how he liked it. It takes about 20 minutes to climb the 7000 feet and I think he even went higher than that. The skydivers wear these altitude watches and for some reason on his video I thought he went even higher. I found out later that he did get to steer the parachute they used on his trip and for some reason they didn’t let me. I don’t know why 🙂 And how did William like it? Well he loved it I think even more than I did! 12002093_1003103376396007_4958975988007553752_n

Now that it’s all said and done I honestly loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat. I also was really grateful for Daryl hanging out for the whole day with us in the heat and taking pictures.IMG_3329

So cheers to all of us! We have officially been entered into the skydiving club!  IMG_3347

Hanging out with the dogs

I wasn’t too ambitious tonight after work but after Daryl mowed for awhile and then headed for the school football game,  I decided that I better get something done tonight. We just got our lawnmower back from being fixed and to be honest I was even a little nervous about using it. But as the night went on, the lawnmower seemed to be juiced up or something and it went much faster than I remembered it and I soon got over being weird about using it.

But the funny thing was that after I mowed for about an hour and the sun was setting, I decided to get the weed eater out and do some trimming. Now granted I know that I haven’t done much lawn work lately but the dogs followed me around like it was something that they had never seen before and sat beside me and just barked. When I asked Daryl tonight if the dogs do that to him he told me never. Now that’s kinda odd isn’t it?

And with Daryl gone tonight to the football game, the dogs got to come in the house to hang out with me until Daryl came home. I’m thinking that the dogs are thinking that this is a pretty good gig.DSCN8250

Awesome night outside

I was out watering the flowers around 10:00 tonight and a couple of things came to mind.

The first one was why in the world am I watering the flowers when I can hardly even see them? Seriously!!

And the second one was how awesome the night was. Now even though it was pretty stinking dark outside, the kitties were playing and running around just having the best of time in the lawn. The dogs were camped out in the yard chewing on who knows what, and there was about a billion gazillion stars out! You could hear the crickets in the fields and honestly it was one of those moments when everything seemed right in the world. Do you know what I mean? As I was walking to the chicken coop I could literally hear myself take a deep breath. Yup, I was in the zone man.

Now what was I doing tonight when I wasn’t walking around outside? I didn’t know if William was coming home this weekend or not, so of course I’m sure he doesn’t have any food where he lives so I made a double batch of a cream cheese pumpkin roll that he likes so much just in case he gets hungry. After that I decided to make a batch of Barefoot in the Grass soap.  I think it turned out pretty good and I guess I’ll just have to wait and see tomorrow when I unmold it how it looks. Until then the kitchen smells good. DSCN8227

As for the rest of the night I did a couple loads of laundry, got groceries, watered the garden, did dishes, and now to take a hot bath and call it a night.

I really stink at taking the night sky pictures which is honestly too bad because the sky has been really cool this summer. What I mean is that tonight again you can see the Milky Way along with all the rest of the stars and the dipper is so low in the sky that it reminds you that it’s going to be cold weather soon. So my photo of the day is that of our windmill. Now granted I LOVE our windmill but when the sky is full of stars it looks pretty cool if I say so myself! I just wish I was better at capturing it on a picture. DSCN8232

Rock Stars!!

Well there you have it. My friend and I are officially Rock Stars! OK, there might only be two people thinking that we are and I guess it’s only official because I’m posting it, but Whooo Hooo!!

I’m sure about now you’re wondering just what the heck I’m talking about right? Well let me give you some background before you hear how awesome we are. It all started a long time ago and honestly we’re really not sure how long ago. But we know that it was about 10 to 12 years ago that we started golfing.

Now for these past 10 years or so of golfing we really never got all 9 holes in until maybe a couple of years ago and since then we’ve only done that about 2 or 3 times. So by now you’re probably seeing that we’re really not taking this golfing thing too serious.

BUT tonight – well tonight was another story! Not only did we golf all nine holes (that should make us Rock Stars in itself!) but we parred a hole. I know, pretty exciting don’t you think?

Let me tell you how this all went down. We play best ball and after we both shot we took the ball closest to the green. It got chipped onto the green and now with this hole being a par 3 – it was time to put our game faces on. My friend dropped her ball and just missed the hole. And we jokingly said that it was time to put the ball in so we can finally get a par on one of these holes. I held my breath…. eye spied the hole… and then off the ball went. It was like in slow motion and then as it got closer to the cup my friend and I took a quick glance at each other and you knew we both were thinking is this actually going to happen? Well the ball started to pick up speed and as it got to the cup it actually went it!! Yup, Rock Stars! And the best part of it is that we didn’t even cheat. Well on that hole anyway 🙂20150901_184749_resized

So now next week golfing we’re going to try to be serious on at least this same hole and see how good we can be. I mean after 10 or 12 years of golfing, maybe it’s just our time. With a ton of confidence and walking just a little bit taller tonight, we’ve even talked about doing a golf tournament maybe next year. We would have to study the rules though before we actually would sign up. Okay, maybe we should wait and see next week how we actually do, don’t you think?
