Sunday storms

Since we were gone yesterday, today was a day to catch up on the weekend stuff.

And what did we do first? Well the cows decided to go for a walk about last night and when they got busted by the neighbors calling us, we knew that they needed some attention today.

So Daryl spent the morning grinding feed

and bringing in a fresh hay bale for them. Who knows – but if that was the reason, well it was successful!

And for me? Well I fell for their trap and they each got a couple of big red delicious apples. Good thing they were on sale this week at the grocery store!

I also tried a new thing with my tomatoes this year. Of course I saw it on the Internet and wanted to give it a try. Because my tomatoes were planted a little later this year, I’m just starting to have them come in. And I don’t know if you have this problem, but of course they don’t all get ripe at once so you can get a couple of tomatoes one day and than a couple of tomatoes the next day. What I did was to cut them into quarters and roast them in the oven instead of trying to keep them to can. I also had some peppers that I needed to use and some cherry tomatoes so into the pan and oven they went. I drizzles olive oil and salted and peppered the whole bunch and that was about it. When they smelled done (maybe about 30 minutes?) I took them out to cool.DSCN8251The oddest thing is that I put them in the food processor to mix up the skins of the tomatoes and then used it in chili it almost made it too thick. You know when you use fresh tomatoes it can get pretty watery? Well when I used the roasted tomatoes I could literally stand a serving spoon up in the middle of the chili without it falling down. Score! So my next adventure is to roast some more and use it in some salsa and see if I can have the same luck. But with this many tomatoes in my garden on one plant and with the rest of the plants looking pretty similar – I’m guessing that I’ll have some to work with even if it doesn’t turn out so good the first time 🙂DSCN8258

Later in the afternoon we spent it at a Birthday party and then our plans for the night was to head over to the Fair and go to an outside concert. Well after the party the sky was looking pretty unsettled so we went home for awhile to see if the bad weather was going to blow over.

There was no such luck on it blowing over anytime soon and I honestly don’t ever remember having so much lightning going on in a storm in my life! There was at least two or three lightnings that would light up the sky at once and of course that meant for us to get all the vehicles into the sheds because you just never know what was going to happen. Some of the vehicles went into the machine shed, others in the garage, and with William and Jude visiting some of the cars ended up in the Roadhouse. But with the chance of hail, it’s a good thing to be safe and get everything under cover. Our concert ended up getting cancelled and that’s a good thing. The storm lasted until around 10:30 ish and sitting on metal bleachers out in the open probably wasn’t the safest thing to do with the storm!

But it did make it a good night for sleeping. There was the sound of the rain outside and with some thunder now in the distance it was kinda calming in a weird kind of way.
