Making the final cuts

With our vacation just around the corner, tonight is the night that we get pretty serious about what clothes and stuff we’re going to bring.

First things first. The first thing that we do is to get out some tables. Now these tables have been up for awhile now and it really works pretty good. What we do is each of us has a card table and we put all our things on it. Clothes, hair stuff, shoes, Q Tips… you know, stuff. Then as the days go by you start eliminating the clothes that you really don’t need. And the thought is that when you get to the day that you actually are packing your bags, you have only the things that you should bring. Well, my table is still wayyyyy too full, so I’m trying to downsize even more. It’s always kind of a weird feeling when your packing. Well, anyway it is for me. You want to make sure that you have everything and are so excited at the same time. We always say that we have just as much fun planning and getting ready to go on vacation as when you are there.

And the weather in Iowa? Well, most of the schools were cancelled today because of the bad conditions the roads were in. As long as we have good weather to get to our flight, I really don’t care. But I guess I do hope that they don’t get too bad of weather when we’re gone either. Kyle is helping us out while we’re gone and will be staying on the farm to not only make sure that the farm animals are OK, but also to keep an eye on everything else around here. And what is the weather in Costa Rica today? 90 degrees 🙂

Photo spot

William wanted to head back to college this morning, so like always I make everyone take pictures before you can leave. So the first picture was of the boys. It sounds kind of crazy, but since they’ve been little we’ve always taken ‘THE’ picture in front of this old cupboard that we have. Now there’s nothing much with the cupboard to look at and I have no idea why we even started the tradition, but we’ve got photo’s with Bert the bunny hiding inside when Kyle could just crawl, then as the years passed it was the background for the boys in their Halloween costumes, and also Birthday party friends pictures were all taken in this one spot in front of it. Then as the kids got older we got pictures with girlfriends, Prom dates, and now when the kids are heading back to college,  all in front of it. DSCN7703I don’t know if you saw this one commercial over Christmas where the tree top Angel saw this one family grow up and everything that over the years that the family did – but I kind of think that’s how this old cupboard is for us. I got it about 30 years ago when we first got married. I went to an auction in St. Lucas and the auction had this big old jelly cupboard sitting on the lawn. And I’m sure you would have done the same thing that I did at that point. I thought, ‘How cool is that!’ Well, for some reason no one was too overly excited about it and I remember that I got it for less than $100. Bargain right? I loaded it up in the truck and brought it home. Well, when Daryl saw it he also just couldn’t believe it. He just couldn’t believe that someone would actually pay money for something that looked that bad. But I had a friend redo the doors to add some glass in them and with a couple of coats of paint on it, it really didn’t look too bad. I found a spot in the kitchen to put it and it’s been there ever since. And who would have known at the time that this old cupboard sitting on a lawn looking pretty lonely and unloved, would play such an important part in our family history. Yup, ‘How cool is that!’

Quiet day

I woke up this morning and it was so quiet in the house. Now I wasn’t sure why I thought it was so quiet but I just felt it. It was one of those times when you’re sure you know the answer, but just can’t get the words out?  I figured that I’d get the answer as the day went on and didn’t think too much of it at the time.

So as I’m walking through the kitchen this morning before anyone got up I looked outside. It was really pretty. Everything was covered in frost from the trees to the barb wire. I haven’t been taking too many pictures lately (you better not be rolling your eyes!) so I grabbed my camera and outside I went. Now I noticed how quiet it was again. But this time I figured it out. The reason that it seemed so quiet was because there was absolutely no wind. The only noise that I heard when I was walking through the yard was No Ears because when she sees you in the yard, she thinks if she makes enough racket someone will come feed them. But that’s not what I was going to do this morning. My goal was to snap a couple of pictures of how quiet the day started out to see if I could kind of capture it. So that’s what I did. Check them out below. As you can tell I’m working on trying to get close up pictures. I’m not the best at it, but I think they’re getting a little bit better. I also smiled to myself when I was trying to get our house picture this morning. A car drove by while I was walking on the road with my camera and they gave me some weird look and when they went by the second time I think they looked a even a little bit more nervous. I just smiled and was hoping that even though I had no idea who they were, I sure hoped that they knew that I lived here!

And then just how I thinking thinking how peaceful the morning was starting I could hear the train in town blowing it’s whistle as it hit the city limits. It was a really nice way to start the morning. Then off to town. Of course I had some errands to run. And it sure seems like I do a lot of errands doesn’t it? It does to me anyway. But it didn’t take that long and soon I was heading for another town to visit my Mom and Aunt. They were visiting in the cafeteria with another lady when I got there and telling stories about the old days. I think I could listen to stories like that for hours. We had a good visit and back home to see what Daryl was up to for the afternoon. I just got home in time to see him putting some ‘supplies’ in the cow yard. Now these supplies were a new big hay bale and also a round bale of bedding. Getting the hay bale into the bunk – no problem.

But getting the corn stalk bale for bedding to stay in the shed? Yea, that was a problem. After Daryl dropped off the corn stalk bale the first time and when Ed saw that Daryl was driving out of the area with the tractor, he got behind the bale and pushed it not only out of the shed, but out and way into the cow yard.

The straw on Ed's head gave it away!

The straw on Ed’s head gave it away!

I laughed when I saw him do it, but I’m thinking that Daryl didn’t think it was too funny. Yea, pretty sure he didn’t think it was too funny. So back with the tractor and grabbed the bale again and he put it into the shed for the second time.

This time he left the tractor in the way while the strings were cut and the bedding was unrolled.DSC_0093 Now the cows can go in and mess it all up and it’ll not only stay in the shed, but will keep them warm and busy for awhile. With Sassy being so close to having her baby, we want it warm for both her and her calf if she has it soon.

And when I was walking through the cow yard to head to the house, I looked back at the cows to find them working on the hay bale already.DSC_0094As for the kids? Well the Christmas break from college is coming to a close and in our house the kids are starting to leave. Kyle’s friend from New York left this afternoon and you can tell already that the house seems just a little bit more empty and quiet. I’m not sure that I like that at all! Tomorrow William is heading south to his college and thank goodness Kyle will be home until the end of February to keep us company!

The chickens and a better supper tonight

Of course I had a little bit of running around tonight after work to do,  but I was able to get home at a better time to make a good supper. I also wanted to hang out with my chickens for awhile. OK, so that sounds either kind of sad or kind of creepy, but either way it’s the truth. I haven’t been in the chicken coop for some time now and I really wanted to check on them tonight to make sure that everyone was doing OK. As you know we were in this terrible weather pattern and the news people are calling it the Polar Vortex. What I would actually call it would be that it was Cold! After checking in on the chickens I found out that they were doing just fine. This one chicken did take me by surprise though. Now when it gets cold outside, it’s normal for the farm animals (cows, dogs, cats…) to have a thick fur coat. But when I saw this chicken I was wondering if maybe he picked up some extra feathers while we were having this Polar Vortex thing going on and was using it to stay warm. Check it out. He looks a little mean, but he’s really not a bad chicken. DSC_0051After hanging with the chickens for a little while,  it was time to get serious about supper. We ended up having grilled steak, buttered onions and mushrooms, smashed garlic potatoes, peas, and warm brownies with ice cream and chocolate syrup. And then the kids made some white chocolate cookies to snack on after supper.DSC_0053 I was wondering why I just dread to go swim suit shopping but I’m getting a much better idea lately just what could be the cause of that!

I had good intentions

I really did have good intentions of having a good supper tonight. But after work I had some errands to run so needless to say – we had ‘let’s clean out the refrigerator night’. And what does that actually mean? Well, it means just what it says. You have all the warm ups from the refrigerator. And since ours was getting pretty full, it worked out perfectly. So for supper tonight we had goulash, broasted chicken, fried potatoes, brats, corn, and cheese bread. And anything after supper that was left over went to Reno for the night. I’m thinking she’s really liking that the kids are home for awhile. She’s getting much better left overs than she did when it was just Daryl and I.

And after the dishes were done, I made some caramel popcorn to have while the kids played some cards.

It’s just how you look at it

When I got up this morning and went to the car to go to work, I thought to myself that it wasn’t so bad out here this morning. You know how you kind of analyze the day, well that’s what I was doing with the weather. I even thought to myself that I might not have even had to warm up the car. Now the reality set in when I was driving away and checked out the outside temperature. It was still -14 but it was a kind of warm -14 degrees if that makes any sense. I was just glad that it’s starting to get warmer because I’m getting pretty sick of this cold weather. I don’t mind a little bit of it, but enough is enough! I’ve gotten some of my summer stuff out for our upcoming vacation and I just keep thinking of the weather there – 93 degrees…. 93 degrees…

With having a house guest from New York and trying to make ‘Iowa food’, tonight we thought we’d go out to an Iowan restaurant for supper. We like to eat at the White House in St.Lucas,  so we loaded up the cars and headed out for the night. The food was excellent and I can’t remember the last time we ate there, so I was glad to go back. We always try to take the boys there when they are heading back to their college or a job. So with William leaving on Sunday for his classes to start, I guess this will be the only time that we’ll get there with him. After supper a stop at a local bar for some pool and darts. Pretty radical for us on a Tuesday night 🙂IMG_0898

‘Have you noticed…’

There are some words that you really don’t want to hear in the morning and especially if you live in Iowa and it’s in the winter. The words are ‘Have you noticed if the furnace ran last night?’ WHAT? I thought it did, but wasn’t sure. The weather outside this morning was going to be terrible (temperature was expected to be -55 degrees with the wind chill) and the house didn’t seem too bad. But I was tired when I went to bed last night so maybe I slept through the cold setting in. And with having house guests it’s really not a good first impression and all. So I beat it down the steps and checked out the thermostat. 70 degrees. Not bad right? Crap, I was looking at the wrong side. The other side of the box said that it was 55 degrees in the house. Now our options are pretty limited at this point and Daryl and I spend a few seconds just standing there with I’m sure pretty horrible looks on our faces. But then I realize that when I was laid off, I bought an extra furnace part when they came to fix it the last time it stopped heating. Maybe we’ll be OK yet. So after heading down to the basement, I found out that the part was still there. Score! But man the floor and basement was pretty cold. I showed Daryl the part and I was going over in my head what the repair man told me 2 years ago on how to fix it. He said that there was a trick to putting it in so if we ever had to replace it, just be careful. After another quick run upstairs for a flashlight, the first part was out of the furnace and before you knew it, the new part was in. Back upstairs I went and turned the furnace back on. Down the steps I went for the last time just to hear the furnace kick in and starting to heat again.  And needless to say, we were pretty smug about the whole deal by about now. We gave each other a quick smile and a high five and then off to get dressed for work. I went to town tonight after work to pick up another spare part in case it happens again and the shop said who put the last one in? I stood just a little taller and said, Oh yea Daryl and I fixed it this morning before we went to work. I was acting all confident and everything, but I think I might have been just as surprised as the repair shop was that it actually worked!

What a great weekend we had!

Even though our weekend was pretty busy, we sure had fun!

The best part about it was that my Mom got out of the hospital on Saturday! Yea!! It was almost 3 weeks and it was time for her to break out of that place. She’s doing really good but is still a little weak from the hospital stay. So she’s going to stay at a nearby nursing home to get some rehabilitation and to get stronger. It’s really close to all us kids and it’ll be a good thing for her.  And with her staying there, she won’t have to go in and out of the cold from her house to get to therapy. We’re all really excited that she’s doing so good and also that she’s getting better each day.

Also this weekend William had a bunch of kids over that he went to Europe with on a musical tour. The weather on Saturday wasn’t the best, but he still had a bunch of kids that could make it and about 6 ended up staying over night. Some of the kids drove around 3 hours to get to our farm, and I was glad that they decided to stay. They pretty much ended up  in the Roadhouse all afternoon and into the night. I was worried that it might be too cold in there with the crazy wind that we had on Saturday. We’ve always had another heater that matched the one that we do use but we just never put together, so William and Kyle tackled the job and got it done. It was funny that I was worried about it being too cold in there because the kids said that they turned the heaters down because it was getting too hot. But I think it was the hootin’ and hollering that was maybe warming them up! Anyway, at the end of the night on Saturday, they all found spots on the floor in the parlor in the house and ended the night laughing and watching TV.

Now Kyle was also busy. He had a friend fly in from New York early on Sunday morning into Minneapolis. She was coming in on an early flight that ended up being delayed a couple of hours. They had to keep deicing the plane because of the freezing rain that they were getting on the East Coast.  So what did he do while he waited for her? Not much. It was funny because he was talking about that there isn’t much to do at the airport if someone’s flight is delayed and there really isn’t any stores that you can go into either. I think our whole family can relate to that.

As for Daryl and I? Well, first we brought a TV to Mom because her new room doesn’t have one. She’s an avid follower of Days of Our Lives and it’s kind of hard to keep up with the story if you don’t have a TV. Then we went to town to see about getting some summer clothes for our vacation. We did find a couple of things that we were looking for, but not as much as I was hoping. It’s funny because in the past it always seems like there is so much summer stuff out early…. well, until you’re the one who wants to buy it. But I’m thinking I’m going to do some quick internet shopping to see what else it out there. I’m also going to get out my clothes and even see if I need anything else. That will be a Tuesday night project.

So at the end of the night, I was tired and ready to crawl into bed.

Schedules

When I was running around town after work today I noticed something. I noticed that absolutely everyone was on a different time schedule then I was. I mean I had exactly 18 minutes in one store and that would leave 15 minutes in another. But I didn’t take into factor the other people’s schedules. Now where in the world do these people come from that have so much time? When I got into the store I put my head down and grabbed my cart with two hands and off I went. I kind of felt like the Roadrunner or something tearing around the store. One guy walked right in front of my cart and then stopped. He turned and looked at me like I did something. Now normally I would think that I did. But in this case – nope, nothing.  So I just grabbed the cart and sped away. Only to realize that I’ve gotten into some traffic jams with the others. Well needless to say, my time plan went down the toilet. But even so, I did get most of everything that I needed. Then on the way home I got behind this white vehicle. So for the longest time I was thinking to myself.. is it a cop or isn’t it? You know when you try to find something that will tell you exactly that, oh yea… it’s a cop, slow down! So trying to make it to my hair appointment on time was quite a challenge and I only ended up being about 5 minutes late. And for the vehicle? It was a repair man’s van. Now to my defense I was pretty far behind this guy. Yea I know that maybe I should be wearing glasses more often when I drive. It could be the difference of being on time or 5 minutes late 🙂

Christmas Concert

Our High School concert was postponed from before Christmas to tonight because of bad weather on the original date. I think this is the first time that I can remember that it actually had to be postponed. I’ve been to concerts where it’s snowing so much outside that they cut out about half the songs, but never postpone it until January. But you know what? It was still really nice. I think because it was after Christmas they didn’t have the crowd that they usually get. Usually they have the gym filled with parents, grandparents, and anyone looking to get in the Christmas mood. But with the Christmas songs and music playing, it was almost nicer than having it before. I found myself in the other years thinking about everything that I need t do yet when the music was playing. I would be thinking about cooking and shopping and everything else the season brings. But when it’s after Christmas, you can just sit back and enjoy it.

This year we also had something kind of special for us. We had both boys with us. So the tradition is to invite all the alumni to sing with the kids one song. And as the guys were getting up and heading to the gym floor, not ONE of them turned around to see if I was coming too. See it’s a joke in our house. I am a terrible singer, so I’m sure glad that they got Daryl’s talent and not my lack of it! DSC_0028And it’s funny, because when the music instructor is asking for the others to join the students, they never have to ask twice. I think the invited guests not only like to sing with the kids but also look forward for the chance. What did I like the best about it?  I just liked seeing all the Kuehner guys on stage having a good time.
