Maintenance work

I’ve been in the maintenance mode lately and boy am I doing a good job at it! Within 10 days I’ll have gone to my first mole checkup at the dermatologist, the optometrist , dentist, massage therapist, and hairdresser. Yea, pretty much a full body once over! So tonight was my dentist checkup.

If you know me by now, I’m not the fondest of dentists and really never get too excited to go there. I mean why bother if nothing is hurting you right? Well it’s so hard to get into any office anymore after work so I decided I better just do go. I was hoping for a snow storm that would cause me not to be able to make my appointment, but no luck on that! So of course in the morning I grab my toothbrush and toothpaste and head to work. Now I was so careful on what I ate during the day and did bring along some mints for my breath, but forgot about any kind of flossing. I’m not the best at thinking about flossing anyway and am OK with that. But when it comes to a checkup, I think about it A LOT more than when I don’t have a dentist checkup 🙂

So when work was over I get in my car and started to head over to the dentist. On the way there I remember how it sure seems like they yank my lips around at the dentist office so I start digging in my purse for my new chapstick that I bought the other day. I knew that it was in there but had the worst time trying to find it. So I’m driving and still digging in my purse and I think I finally had found it. But when I take it out of my purse I see what I really found was a small container of dental floss. Totally weird! First of all I had no idea that it was in there and second of all it was like fate or something. Well now that I had it in my hand I thought it’s probably a good time to use it. OK, flossing your teeth while you’re driving isn’t the easiest or the smartest thing to do so I was just out of town and decided to pull into the grocery parking lot and floss. I was thinking to myself that I’m so smart! When I get asked if I have been flossing by the dental office I can honestly say back, ‘you bet’ And guess what? It wouldn’t even be a lie! So I head over to the dentist and while I was in the chair the dental hygienist said that my teeth and gums are looking so good and I must be taking good care of my teeth and flossing. Now I waited for right time to chime in and then it happened. She said have you been flossing lately?  Shazam!! I said back to her “You Bet!” I didn’t really tell her that I just did it maybe only when I was in the grocery store parking lot, but sometimes you don’t want to share too much information anyway. But when the dentist came in to do a once over look at my teeth he said how good everything was looking and again I was feeling pretty smug about the whole thing. Now I don’t know if my mouth looked that bad before – but I’m taking these comments only as positive ones. Finally I told them that I use coconut oil in the morning and do what is called pulling. This is a process that you put the coconut oil in your mouth and kind of pull it between your teeth to get rid of all the bad germs before you brush. And it must work for me because I’ve been doing this pretty faithfully for almost a year and from the sounds of my dental visit – it was a huge success.  Score!

Now I don’t recommend this process if you don’t like coconut because you’re putting straight coconut oil in your mouth to melt it. I use about a tsp. of it and it’s an organic food grade coconut oil that I get at the health store. You swish it around in your mouth for about 10 minutes or so and then spit it out in the garbage. Kinda gross, but your mouth an teeth really feel good after it’s done.

Weekend Photo’s

Well Christmas and the New Year has officially come to a close at our house. Yes we are one of those people who leaves the lights lit until the Epiphany and with it only 3 days away, I actually took down the tree. I had it lit up all day and felt kind of bad when I was taking it apart. OK, I know that this sounds a little strange, but I was stripping it of all the presents, ornaments, and lights and knowing that it gets tossed outside in the garden to decompose it did make me a little sad. But when William took the tree out of the living room and put it on the front porch, the living room was so clean and open without the tree it didn’t take me too long to get over the feeling bad for the tree thing. And now that the tree is gone, the dogs can see inside again and when the kids saw their sad faces, well we had company 🙂DSCN8512

Happy New Year!!

2016 – Holy Cow !! Who would have guessed that it’s January already. Now I don’t want to jinx this winter going fast thing.. but if it’s January already, then February is almost around the corner. Hopefully we won’t have such crazy snow storms or even worse such cold weather this winter. If it gets really cold the frost goes down too deep and well that also means that the pipes all start to freeze and you’ve got trouble! So we for sure don’t want that. Just keep thinking Spring!

So now with the beginning of a New Year also comes the great opportunity to start over with a clean slate. And what a better way to do that other than with a new planner. I wanted to try this one planner that I’ve been reading about and was lucky enough to get one for Christmas. Now this planner isn’t one that you just pick up and can use, there is some reading and goal planning that also goes along with it. Yup, just up my alley! So while I was thinking about this upcoming year I started to think of things that I didn’t get done in 2015. But because dwelling on the past sure can make your belly hurt, I decided to think about what I did get done this year instead. Now some of them was fun and well some of them were done purely out of obligation. Here is my 2015 list: Helped to organize an Irish Stew supper for the community in our parish, help to publish the second book in a serious of 5 for our town (this book dealt with our town’s business history going back to 1915 and it really was a big task), worked on setting up a photo gallery in our town for the Irish Fest, got a crown for my tooth (yuck!),  joined a new committee for creating an exercise trail for our town (Vice President), took a new position at work, started a soap business (Yea!!), got a mole checkup (promised William for 7 years that I would do this and finally did it), hosted 3 big family occasions this year on the farm with 2 of these occasions within 10 days of each other and around 100 people, and finally got my Secret Project done!!  Yup, it was kind of a busy year now that I look back. And I’m not sure which one is actually the best that I got to check off,  but I do know that I worked probably too long on the secret project and honestly wasn’t sure if I was ever going to get it done. Oh well, better late than never! DSCN8498

All wrapped up and ready to go

All wrapped up and ready to go

The book that I created is recipes from my Aunts and pictures and information that details their family as they grew up. I was able to add quite a few pictures and information and not that I’m biased or anything, but it is seriously a pretty cool book. I delivered them just this week and from what I’ve heard,  they like them as much as I do. Score! Well now it’s time to think about next year and my goals. My thoughts for 2016? It’s going to be an awesome year!! Happy New Year!!

We’ve got trouble

When I got home from work tonight I saw that the new dog bed that was under the Christmas tree this year was outside on our front porch. Now no big deal – it was going to go outside anyway. But what I could see what was happening is not a whole lot of sharing going on with the dogs and this bed. Now honestly I thought they would just do their normal routine and one would take one side of the bed and then the other dog would grab the other end with their teeth and then they would play tug a war. When the item finally busts, they grab whatever is left and run through the yard like they are crazy or something.

But not this time. Only if Santa Clause would have known that they would be actually good then he could have brought two beds. So Reno is the lucky dog that has been on it most of the time. I laughed because I threw out some dog treats this morning and Kaiser ran to get his and the one that I threw to Reno landed a little ways away from her. She looked at Kaiser and you could almost hear her thinking that there was no way she was going to get off the bed.  So she kind of scooted over while staying on the bag and grabbed the treat. Honestly she’s still pretty limber for an old gal. Reno just stood by me and stared at her and then looked at me. It was kind of a pathetic look and I think he’s not going to get to use this bed very much. Lucky for him I know where I can pick up another one.  DSCN8497

My soap supplies arrived!

My soap supplies arrived… my soap supplies arrived!!

When I got home from work today I saw that my soap supplies finally had arrived and was just waiting for me to unbox them to see what treasures that I will had ordered. I know that it’s kind of a sad thing to admit, but getting new soap supplies is just like Christmas all over again. OK note to self : REALLY take a good look at my New Years Eve goals this year and possibly find other hobbies to fill in my time 🙂

But as I say that I thought I should post my Screaming Peacock soap that I made the other day with the Rice Bran oil. I can’t really tell if it’s going to be a good soap with this oil or not, but it did cut well. I’m not as happy with how the color turned out on the top, I don’t hate it or anything like that but it’s just not how I am hoping it would look like. I would like a little bit more of the green to show through. Oh well, it sure smells good! DSCN8500

Blowing snow on the farm

It started to snow on Monday and then it really started to blow as the night went on. It was one of those times when you just keep checking and checking the weather outside to see if you would be able to get out or not the next morning. And honesty it wasn’t going to change so I have no clue why I do check so often. It for sure isn’t because I want the kitties to come into the house as I’m checking the weather. I think their plan is that I will cave one of these times and just let stay them in. Well they are not so lucky!DSCN8494 And with Daryl and Kyle in Minneapolis waiting again for the second day for Kelcie to fly in, I knew that I for sure didn’t want to get stuck! But early this morning as I laid in bed I could hear the road grader guy drive by. SCORE! At least now I knew that all I had to do was to get to the gravel road. So I left way early this morning for work and hit the gas and made it out to the gravel road. Whew! I am so weird on how I use my vacation days at work and I never want to use them unless I absolutely have to, so I was feeling pretty good about this.

But now we had to get Kelcie into Minneapolis. She left early on Monday morning and on Tuesday afternoon she finally made it into the Minneapolis airport. I guess the weather was really playing havoc with the airlines. Wow, that was a terrible flight if I ever heard of one! And now the gang’s all here and it’s time for us to exchange our family gifts. We drew names awhile ago and tonight was the night to exchange them. As I was upstairs wrapping up a couple of gifts that didn’t make the first round of wrapping, there was quite a noise downstairs and it was the kids messing around and having a good old time. I found myself thinking that all the noise sure can make your house a home. Now I don’t want to kid you, we have more shoes and stuff in our house than normal and one day our refrigerator is full and then next day I’m at the grocery store. But I don’t think I would have it any other way.DSCN8490

Made a quick batch of Screaming Peacock soap

I’ve got a little bit of time in between the candy making and so I grabbed my tubs of oil and I started back on making soap again. I know that Kim and a couple of other readers were hoping to get a bar or two of my soap and so I sure need to replenish my inventory. Shoot I haven’t even used my new soap mold yet that William made me! Tonight I made a batch of Screaming Peacock soap and downsized it for the amount of materials that I had on hand. (I’m waiting for some more soap supplies to come in and I sure hope that it’s soon!) I even tried something different tonight.  I used Rice Bran Oil in the recipe for the first time. Quite some time ago I thought I needed a lot of this oil and haven’t used any of it yet… well until today. The rice bran oil is supposed to be rich in Vitamin E and anti-oxidants. Rice bran oil is especially good for treating dry and mature skin. 🙂  Come to think of it, maybe that’s why I bought so much of it.

So there was a couple of things that I was pleased about this soap batch tonight. First I was pleased that I could calculate the percentages of oils/water/lye mixture for the batch down from the original amounts to what I wanted to make. Yea for me! And the second thing is that the rice bran oil actually turned out quite nice! Double Yea!! I’m working on being patient so I only took the soap out of the mold and haven’t cut it yet. I want to let it sit for a couple of days and then I’ll cut it and post a picture. Until then, I’m anxious to get a couple more batches done this week if my supplies come in.

Guess what I did today?

Well if you guessed that I made candy that is exactly what I did! I needed a platter for our friends and after I got it all put together and the kids went to deliver it, I noticed that there was a large container in the refrigerator that is filled with candy that never made it on the platter. Oh no!!! Well I have one more platter to make before I put away the chocolate for the Christmas season and from the looks of it – it’s going to be a big one!! DSCN8487

Saturday Night is date night

Yup, you heard it right – it’s date night. So we got all cleaned up and everything, took a quick picture of us actually without chocolate going into our mouths and we were off. We got a little bit later start on the night, but heck who cares right? So we went to a restaurant that we like in Decorah that has a wood fire pizza that it really good. USA today has even said that they were the best wood fire pizza in Iowa. OK, so I really don’t know their competition in Iowa but take my word for it that it’s good! We laughed when we got there because we literally knew almost everyone in the restaurant. After a good time in Decorah we stopped in at our town to see what was going on and then headed home. We for sure need to take more time and have more of these date nights!DSCN8486

Merry Christmas!

Christmas is finally here! It seems like you spend a lot of time preparing for Christmas and when it’s actually the day, it goes by so fast doesn’t it?

It’s not that uncommon to find some milk and cookies left out on Christmas Eve for Santa Clause and this year once again there was some just waiting for him to come. Even though the kids are not such small kids anymore, they are still Christmas kids and always leave something for Santa. DSCN8459So out comes the milk and cookies by the Christmas tree and then I send everyone to bed.

And in the morning? Well we got up later than I had planned and with our church having mass on Christmas morning, we had to hurry up and get dressed to get there on time. I don’t ever remember going to church on Christmas morning since I’ve moved to the farm. We always went the night before to church and even a few years we had midnight mass which was very cool! But this morning as I sit in the church pew and listen to the choir, it reminds me that it really doesn’t matter when you have church. I found myself a couple of times with I’m sure a dumb grin on my face because both boys were singing in the choir and Kyle helped out with the instrumental part of the mass with playing the trumpet. It was really nice.

OK, mass was over and let’s get home to open the presents. Daryl quick went out to do the morning chores and I was working on some potato soup for dinner at Ma’s. Because I had the ham bones in the crock pot to cook overnight, when I started to make the soup I took out the ham bones and the dogs really got a treat this morning when I topped them with fried eggs for them. DSCN8460You might say that the dogs are just a little spoiled.

But then… then we finally got to the presents. Talk about traditions. The kids get their presents and start to take turns one by one opening their gifts and then the next one opens one of their gifts. I always take a sigh of relief when I see that they actually do match up and are an even amount. As I saw them opening their gifts while sitting beside each other on the floor, it was one of those moments when you tell your brain – remember this time..remember this time. It is always so cool to have the kids together and I love it. We’ll have another Christmas when Kelcie comes next week when we do our exchange gifts along with opening a few more gifts from Daryl and I.

With the gifts opened, it’s time to head to town to my Mom’s for dinner. With having Christmas for our side a couple of weeks ago, Mom said that she would make homemade beef noodle soup for anyone who could make it on Christmas day. She said it won’t be a big meal and just some soup and stuff.  Well heck count us in! I brought the ham soup along for the in-laws who for some reason don’t like the homemade noodle soup like we do. But guess what? That’s more for myself and my brothers and sisters to eat – Score!  The only thing that I didn’t quite see was that Ma said that we would have just soup and it won’t be much of a bother. Well the tables were full with food! It sure didn’t look like a small dinner to me and everything really tasted good. We spent the afternoon just hanging out at Ma’s which was really nice. DSCN8464

The night couldn’t end without Daryl and I playing another game of cards against the boys. And when Daryl and I lost the first game tonight we decided to play a second game to see who really are the winners in the house. Yea, guess who won both games?

Booo!!

Booo!!

Now that the day is over and I’m sitting in our living room just looking at our Christmas tree, I think how lucky we are to have such a great Thanksgiving and Christmas with our families.

Hoping that you had a great Christmas Day with your family! DSCN8474
