Phone call

Now Daryl is pretty used to getting phone calls in the middle of the night, so when the phone rang last night after 2:00 am, he was up and answering it right away. But as I was laying in the bed listening to his conversation, I knew that it wasn’t his work calling him, but someone else. I could hear him talking about William, and then I really was getting worried. Who was calling us was the Ames police. Yup, every parents nightmare. But what they were calling about was that William’s car horn was going off and they needed him to go check out his car to see why. Whew! OK, not so bad now. Daryl told him that we’d get in touch with William, but he wouldn’t have a ride to get to his car, so the person on the other side of the phone said that they would just pick him up and gave us their phone number. OK, now the real task was at hand. Have you ever tried to wake up a college kid? Of course none of them have a real phone and their cell phone is on either vibrate or mute. But after a couple of calls, William woke up and had all the information about his car. Daryl told him to grab a vise grip just in case he needed to unhook his horn and call us when he found out more. So all we were laying there in bed, I started to panic. Were we really sure that it was the police and his horn was actually going off? You know your mind can go a million different directions at 2:30 in the morning when it comes to your kids. So I made Daryl call back the number that they gave us to make sure that it was legitimate . It turned out that it really was the police station and they said that they had talked to William and they would send someone over to pick him up. His car is in a Freshman parking lot, and this lot is a very long way from his dorm so it was a good thing that he could get a ride. Someone from the College Security picked him up and took him to his car. But when they got there the horn wasn’t on, so they were a little confused. What happened was that the horn must have shorted out or something, because now it doesn’t work at all. But in the whole scheme of things, this was the best scenario that we could have had. We were worried that maybe someone was trying to steal his car and set off the horn or something. Either way, we are all pretty tired tonight and will be anxious to get a good nights sleep!
