Today, Daryl and I officially became ’empty nesters’ Yup, we moved William down to his college today so he could get his room set up. I wasn’t sure that we were going to get everything that he wanted to bring with him into two cars this morning though. William put what he wanted to take and let’s just say that he had quite a pile. But he reassured me that it was going to fit. And after we got the refrigerator, computer chair, carpeting (Thanks Mike again!), TV, computers, pizza pazzazz, coffee maker, printer, posters and pictures, and multiple boxes and laundry baskets full of other stuff into the two cars – I realized that he was right! We even had some room to spare. So after we stopped off at a gas station to fill up the cars, down to Ames we headed. We had really good luck with finding help from the volunteers, and it didn’t take long to get the room somewhat organized. I’m sure the boys will move the room around a couple of times before too long, but for now it’s at least all in the room. After we got a quick bite to eat, the next stop was to get some food for their dorm. Now both William and his room mate have the food plan at the school, but they both decided that they should have something in the room to eat in between meals. There was a Target not far from the college and I think every kid and their families were in that store. You know the old saying, “The cupboard was bare…” Well in this Target, the shelves were literally bare. People were buying everything that they forgot at home, or they planned to pick up once they got there. To give you an example, William wanted some water for his room and in this whole store there was one case of water left. It reminded you of when they show people looting a store, but in this case they were just grabbing anything and everything – but then they were paying for it instead. To be honest, it was even kind of fun. We saw a couple of other families in the store that we knew, and just laughed about the whole thing. When we did finally check out, back to the room we went with about 8 more bags of stuff. Then after telling William good-bye, we left. I think it’ll be a great experience for him and I hope that college is everything that he’s hoping it will be. I think he’ll do just fine. And for me? Well, I didn’t even cry. But … the nights not over with yet.
