Working in the garden

I spent a good part of the day in the garden again today. I don’t think that I’ve ever planted cabbage before this year, so I asked my Mom when it was done. I’m thinking this was a dumb question because she just looked at me and said when I wanted to cut it, then it was done. I guess you can eat it when you think it’s as big as you want. She said that you don’t want it too big, otherwise it’ll bust. So today… I took out the first head of cabbage. Now I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it, but it’s in my refrigerator now.

First head of cabbage this season

I also wanted to cut the next set of lettuce. I don’t think this looks as good as when William had the garden, but it’s coming along OK. I replanted some more the other day and hoping that those will turn out better. I’m not sure that you can have a second season of lettuce, but I’m out nothing if  doesn’t work.  The one thing that I like to plant and then really never have plans for is the basil. I LOVE to grow basil. It is so easy and smells so good, but the problem is that you get so much. I’ve got 5 (?) plants and a lot of basil now.

OK, maybe just a little bit too much basil?

I cut it also and I’m planning on drying it and then I can use it in spaghetti sauce this fall. After I cleaned it, I put it outside in the sun to dry and that worked pretty well. I’ll put it in the dehydrator on Friday to dry it down more. And the last thing about my garden is the tomatoes. I’m pretty proud of them and I sure hope they keep doing well. I think the key to this whole tomato thing was to keep pulling the leaves up into the cages. Either that or the constant weeding and watering thing that I’ve been doing might have been a factor 🙂

Looking Good (so far)

I’ve been having some trouble with the chickens lately. I’ve never seen why two hens just have to be in the same nest before, but the last couple of days I can’t get either of them out. I end up just grabbing them and yanking them out. Today when I was trying to get them out, another chicken jumped up on the board and was just watching. I thought to myself – does she want to go in there also? She was just standing there watching and eventually I did get them both out and took the eggs. Daryl said that maybe they are just close friends. Maybe he’s right and it doesn’t really hurt anything with them both in there. They just look a little silly.

Very close friends
