Ma’s Birthday

Today is my Mom’s Birthday and she is now officially 82. If you were looking for her today, you wouldn’t have to look too far. She was playing cards with her friends downtown and having a really good time. So how do I know that she played cards today? Well, I was asked to join their group as a substitute. I’ll have to tell you how this whole thing went down this morning.

I just came in from chores and the phone was ringing. It was Mom and she made some small talk and then cut to the chase. She asked if I would fill in for someone at their cards today. WHAT? No way. I figured out how many times these ladies get together in a year to play cards and joining their group shouldn’t be something that you take lightly. What I figured out was that they got together at least 180 times a year (this didn’t count all the church nights or get togethers at each others houses). And if they played 6 hands each time they were together, that would make them playing at least 1080 games a year. OK, so now they are going to send a Rookie in – Me! I thought to myself .. I can do this. So after telling her No for the third time, I caved in and said yes. So I quick took a shower and on the way over to her town I was trying to remember how to play 6 handed Euchre. We usually play Euchre when we get together with our friends, but not 6 handed. So I bet you’re wondering how we did? I was on the team with my Mom and my Aunt and we lost the first game. To be honest we got skunked. And the bad part of this is that they said that in all the card games that they’ve played, they’ve never skunked the other team. Ever! And one of the ladies even kept the score card to show her husband. This wasn’t all my fault, we were just not getting any good cards at all. But we eventually did win a game and even though I would have never guessed that I’d be sitting in a tavern playing cards at 10:00 in the morning – I’m thinking this retirement thing isn’t such a bad idea after all! We had pop, cookies, and there was tons of laughter – how could you go wrong with that?

Just hanging out and playing cards
