Still Celebrating Mom’s Birthday

Well if you read yesterday’s post you know that it was Mom’s birthday yesterday. So today after dinner, any of us kids who could make it to Mom’s for birthday cake came over to help celebrate with her.

So with a house full of kids and grand kids, we had a great afternoon celebrating her birthday. Of course you can’t go to Mom’s without her having just tons of food too! Now how in the world do you think I’m going to meet my running goals with all this good food? But it’s a sin to leave it go to waste, so I guess I’ll have to figure something out.

We beat it home early from the party so we could do our weekly Skype with the boys. We were able to catch Kyle in Korea, but William ended up calling a little later to talk. Both kids are doing well and it’s so nice to just touch base with them every week to hear how their week went.

And so with all this going on this weekend, we talked about staying home tonight and maybe just vegging out by the fireplace. But instead .. off to town we went to go see a movie. We haven’t been to a show for a long time and tonight’s movie ‘American Sniper’ was really good and I was glad that we didn’t do the sleeping thing on the couch tonight instead.

Now it’s time to get things organized and ready for the upcoming work week. I’ve got a lot to do around the house that I want to get done and I also need to get stuff ready for our upcoming town’s Irish Fest. Whew! I better make some good ‘to do’ lists tomorrow.

But for now? Well it was a fun weekend and Happy Birthday Mom! DSCN9531

Happy Birthday Mom!

It’s Mom’s birthday today and we have a full day planned. First things first though. Since it was her birthday and everything, I thought we needed to snap a quick picture for her Facebook page. I mean if you’re going to celebrate your 85th Birthday – you might as well start out with an updated Facebook picture. So after I kind of forced her into the photo op in the morning, we got into the car and we were off to the Amish. I was hoping to get there this weekend and I was glad that we did make it after all. I only needed a couple of things and I stuck to the plan of only picking up those things. I can get carried away in the bulk grocery stores, but seriously that’s just has bad news all over it if I bring everything home that I want to. Now you would expect the Amish Community to live on gravel roads and this community isn’t any different. We knew where we needed to go to get to the store there, but finding our way to the ‘right’ highway was another story. After a lot of gravel travel, we finally saw some taller buildings off in the distance and figured it was a town. Now what town was it? We had no clue at the time, but it was at least a town. Seriously sometimes you just can’t be too picky!  Finally we saw on the Post Office that it was a town that was actually not that far off our travel to the town we were headed to and now we were back in business. The only thing that took the worst of it from all the gravel travel was the little car. It started out black in the morning and once we got the the highway.. well let’s just say that I had to wipe off the license plate and the back break lights so you could see them. They had a nice dark brown color of mud (it actually was mud).

We finally made it to town and I had a return that needed to be brought back and then off to the consignment store to drop some more stuff. I have a pretty aggressive money goal that I want to make at this store and if you have something in our house and not being used – well you better grab it quick before I do and sell it at this consignment store!

Next on our travels was to go to my sister’s for dinner. She heard that we were going to be in the area and she only lives about 30 minutes from where we were shopping, so that’s where we were off to next. All their kids and grand kids were home for the weekend so it was a houseful when we showed up. When we got there she was just finishing up in the kitchen and she had the table full of food! I don’t know if it was because we were coming for dinner or if she always cooks like this – but man I think I better be prepared if she stops by our house! We had baked potatoes, chicken cordon blue, steamed broccoli, corn, baked beans, warm apple crisp with ice cream, and for dessert Scotcheroos with chocolate frosting. See.. I told you that she had a lot. Well after our bellies were full and we sang Happy Birthday to Mom, we got back in the car and we were off again.

This time we stopped at the Mall to see about a couple of wedding gifts that Mom needed. We had great luck and what was our next stop? Well supper of course. It was going to be too late to start cooking when we both got home, so we stopped quick for a bite to eat.

At the end of our Birthday Road Trip, it was around 7 pm when we finally walked into the house for the night. What a great day just to drive around and kind of do just whatever we wanted. A little shopping, a little gravel travel, a little visiting, and a lot of good food. Score!

The Secret Garden Musical

It was girls night out and we were off to find a good supper and then a Musical in town. DSCN9526After I ate more than I probably should have, we were off to tonight’s adventure. How come when you go out for supper (or any meal) with your friends it seems to always taste so much better?

Well we found the address for the musical and because none of us had been there before, we really wasn’t sure what to expect. The building was built in 1894, but if you know much about Decorah Iowa at all, well you know that there are a lot of old buildings in that town. I was excited to be able to check this out tonight because I’ve been to more high school musicals and plays than probably can be counted, and we’ve been to other performances – but nothing in a small community setting. This was going to be fun! We walked in and soon found our seat. And the first thing that you notice is that it’s a small more intimate setting. I didn’t take a picture inside the hall, but I did find one out on their web site that I copied. Below is the seating for the guests.

These seats came from a local school and are around 70 years old

These seats came from a local school and are around 70 years old

I counted 45 seats and after the play started – you know what? I think that this was just perfect! They were having the musical a couple nights and I’m sure will have full crowds all the nights. For tonight’s show – it’s a sell out crowd. And how fun for the performers to look out and to literally see everyone’s faces. Even though it sounds like this little theater has had it’s own share of troubles with the building, the community has been there in the past and I’m sure will always be there in the future.

As I was sitting there, I was trying to figure out just how I could describe this theater. Because where we sat, we were close to the piano and flutist, and it really caught your attention that they were a big part in this production. So for me, I kind of felt like the old black and white movie picture days (and NO I didn’t see them first hand!) when you had the piano player on the side keeping the story going and creating the mood. Now I don’t know if this is how every play is in the theater and I’m kinda guessing not. But tonight it was so much fun just seeing how this community puts on a great show and such a personal one at that! Definitely something to see if you are able to while visiting Decorah.

Bringing it back

I had an appointment after work today at the Chiropractor’s office in a nearby town and for some totally weird reason .. I was early. Ya, can you believe that one? So I was just driving around checking out the town just killing time and then I saw an Amish buggy. Honestly it also looked like he was just driving around too! It was just really lightly snowing outside and with my car being an electric car, I could hear the horses hitting the pavement with their hooves in front of me and making the clickity clock sound that horses make. For me this just instantly makes me smile. I don’t know – maybe I was Amish in my previous life or something. So now to see if I can snap a quick picture for the photo of the day. I don’t know if these buggy’s have rear view mirrors are not – but I’m guessing if he saw me behind him,  then he really thought that I was stalking him. The reason I’m thinking this is because I took a picture at the first stop sign by just sticking my arm out the window and well it didn’t turn out so good. So I followed him again and then took another picture. OK, this one wasn’t so bad, but I really wanted a better one you know. So I kept following him through town and honestly my little ‘oh this is such a relaxing sight’ turned into .. I MUST AND WILL GET A GOOD PICTURE!! Finally I quit following him because for one reason the town wasn’t so big and we were running out of streets and another reason is  that I should get to my appointment before I ended up being late. So when I looked at the pictures that I took,  guess which one I used? Yup, I used the first one that I snapped. But this whole Amish escapade did remind me that I haven’t been to the Amish Community not far from us for awhile and maybe I can sneak a trip there this weekend. You know.. just check it out. And I promise – no more stalking!

So here is my picture of the day IMG_2268

Mystery Photo 1-21-15

OK, so this weeks mystery photo is something that’s very old and was used in the kitchen. And even though I’ve only used it once – it worked very well!

Mystery Photo 1-14-15 results

I thought this one would be easier to guess.

Here is the clueDSCN9524a

And this is what it was. DSCN9524It’s an old oil lamp that Daryl’s folks used when they were on the farm. We’ve also used it when the last ice storm went through and took out the electricity for the night. There’s something about the light that you get from having these lamps lit that makes you forget that you’re out of electricity!

Let’s Jazz it up some!

So back to the gym I went tonight and I thought to myself – Let’s Jazz this place up a little bit. I got some new jogging pants and I was more than anxious to wear them. Tonight was going to be the big debut. After I did a bunch of errands around in town after work, off to the gym I go. Feeling a little nervous on just how ‘loud’ these pants are, but like the saying goes.. Go big or go home! Well, my thought was that let’s have a little fun while we’re here right? I mean everyone seems so serious and working so hard, let’s at least look like we’re having fun! OK, so I go into the locker room and change into the pants. Now there’s two young girls in the room and they take one look at me and then look at each other. It didn’t take a Rocket Scientist to figure out that they were pretty much speechless and at that point I’m thinking that maybe they shouldn’t say what’s really on their mind. Normally I would think that they are thinking to themselves – Man she’s really rock’n those pants. But honestly, I’m thinking they were more saying to themselves.. Oh my. Whatever right and who cares? So I put on my headphones and start running. I’m listening to some good old James Brown music and when he’s singing how can you care what others are thinking? But as I’m looking around the room, not one person in the whole complex had any other color pants on than black. Well, at first I thought, ‘holy crap’! I know that I’m new here and everything and maybe I broke some informal dress code. Then as the laps continued, I thought to myself – man they sure are missing out on something much more fun and totally more colorful! So in the words of James Brown “I feel good”!

So check out my – Not So Black  –  running pants and tell me that they don’t make you smile! IMG_2264

It’s the pits

It’s been a little over a week now since I’ve been using the homemade deodorant,  and I must say that I’m kinda impressed. Even though it does take some getting used to when it’s put on because it almost seems a little wet, I’ve gotten used to that. So this whole week I’ve been trying to put it to the test to see if it does help stop wetness and most importantly if you don’t stink when you sweat. How have I been putting it to the test? Well I’ve been using it when I’ve gone to the gym and even though my underarms haven’t stayed completely dry, they also weren’t like sopping rags or anything like that. I thought I had come to a conclusion that the homemade stuff does actually work after the last time I went running and literally stuck my nose in my underarms of my t shirt to see how bad they stunk. (You think I should maybe find a different hobby?) Well I couldn’t smell anything and I went proudly back to work to report that it does work! Then someone told me that you can’t actually smell your own sweat. What? That sounds crazy, so I Google’d it to see if maybe she was telling a lie or something and guess what? She was right! There are a lot of articles on how you can not smell yourself when others can smell you. Totally weird and maybe even a little scarey right? So tonight after I went running for about 45 minutes I asked Daryl if he would do a favor for me. He said ‘sure’.. I said whoa and to wait until he knew just exactly what I was going to ask. I wanted to know if he would help me out to find out if the homemade deodorant really worked and I needed someone to get close and give me a whiff. With some reluctance he did agree and said that it didn’t smell. Now either I wore off the stink on the way home or it actually worked. Who knows. But it’s enough research for me to finally pass on the recipe that I made back on January 10th. So here it is:

3 Tbsp coconut oil, 2 Tbsp shea butter, 3 Tbsp baking soda, 3 Tbsp cornstarch, and a couple of drops of vitamin E. Yup, that’s all that’s in it. Follow the blog with pictures on Jan 10th and you’ll have your own homemade deodorant sitting in your cupboard in no time. Now my container isn’t pretty and the girl at work put her’s in an empty deodorant container and that’s how I’d like to do my next batch. But for now? Well, my old mason jar will do just fine. IMG_2266And guess what? The best part of the whole recipe thing is that I found this one on the web site called…. “Treehugger”.

Bucket List – Turtle

I’ve been trying to get to a turtle soup/stew outing for maybe a couple of years now. It’s not that common to have them, but it’s also not that uncommon also. I know that probably doesn’t make sense, but what I’m trying to say is that you can find someone having one in our area at least once a year. So there was a Turtle Feed going on Saturday night not that far from where we live. It sounded like the perfect chance to finally get to one of these meals. The advertisement was for a Turtle Feed and I wasn’t sure what that meant. We weren’t that up on the turtle lingo. So I guess tonight was the night that we were about to find out. After church and working at the soup supper we were having for the parishioners (no turtle soup – only beef and barley & chili) off we went to pick up my brother and sister in law and head north. I was sure hoping that they didn’t run out of whatever they were cooking with the turtle before we got there,  and Daryl said with more excitement than I was thinking he should have, that we could really easily go to the restaurant in town and grab some sandwiches. I’m getting the feeling that eating turtle wasn’t on his bucket list 🙂  Once we found where the meal was taking place, they were still serving turtle. They said in the past they served turtle soup, but the turtle stew was more of a favorite and they were serving that tonight. When I was standing in line for the bowl of turtle stew, I asked where they get their turtle from. Well they trap some of them and the group brings that meat in to put towards the supper. And then she asked me if I saw the big snapper turtle at the fair this past summer? She said it was huge!  When I said ‘it was’ huge, she said yea he’s part of  the supper tonight. Now I’m all for this, but I kind of felt bad for the turtle. Well just maybe for a second and then I had my bowl full and was looking for a good spot to sit down and try this.

Turtle Stew and deep fried turtle

Turtle Stew and deep fried turtle

It did taste kind of like clam chowder or something, I’m not sure. But it was good and I would eat it again if I had a chance. Then one of the workers came around with a plate of deep fried turtle. I had two and both of them were really dark meat and very tender. Some of the other ones that were tried at our table were white meat. One of the workers said that there is 7 places off a turtle that you can eat. Now some of these places were obvious ones.. feet, belly, tail, neck, but the comment that he said that surprised me was about where the ‘best’ meat was. He said that there were two small nuggets that you get from the head and they were like the prize jewel or something. OK, I won’t go any further than this. Living on a farm you know that if you are raising food for others you shouldn’t waste it, but I’m just saying that I don’t think that I’ve ever thought of eating some nuggets from a head of a turtle before. But guess what? We did eat some smaller pieces of deep fried turtle last night. Who knows right? IMG_2260

So now I can finally check this off my Bucket List. I wonder what else I have on that list?

Giggles new adventure

For the calendar saying that it’s January, the weather today would seem more like late October. There was a little wind and the snow was melting. Fantastic! So these past couple of days Daryl and I have been talking about letting Giggles get out of the calf pen in the barn and venture out into the cow yard. Now this is a big step and we for sure don’t want him to get sick. But the forecast for the upcoming week is good weather, so we decided today is the day. First things first. Since Giggles is a boy, he needed to get made into a steer. After we caught him and banded him, the next thing to do was to see how not only he acts once he’s on the cow yard but also how the other cattle act with him there. Once the door was open, Sassy went out which kind of surprised me. Even though she wasn’t the best Mom (OK, she was terrible!) with Scarlet, she’s come around with Giggles and had done a great job. Now that she was outside, we were expecting Giggles to get pretty lonely in the barn and jump out. He wanted to be on the cautious side and was getting a lot of encouragement from the other cows.IMG_2243Well, almost all the cows. I’m not sure that Ed really thought it was such a great deal or not. But soon he made the big jump out of the doorway and then he found his freedom.

Ed wasn't impressed

Ed wasn’t impressed

Off he took running like he was a crazy calf! He’d run to the one side of the yard and all the cows would follow and then he’s turn around and run to the other side of the yard with the cows all just a couple of feet behind him. He is really a strong calf and I’m thinking that he’s going to grow up pretty fast. He was already eating some hay when he was in the barn and every once in awhile he’d even eat some corn. He seemed a little bit too young to be doing that – but he’s pretty stubborn so I guess he’ll do what he wants.

When we were watching the cows to make sure everyone was playing nice I noticed the one cattle feeder. Or lack of it would maybe a better way to describe it. This is how it should look IMG_2245and this is how the second one looks. IMG_2247I guess Ed didn’t like having two on the cattle floor and took care of that his way.

And finally with all the commotion going on with the cows, also stirred up the dogs in the barn. They were also running around like they were crazy and the one thing that they really like to do is to see who is the ‘King of the hay pile’. Now normally Reno wins and kind of pushes Kaiser off. But as you can see in this picture, Kaiser is thinking if he barks loud enough he’s the winner. IMG_2254
