Cows & Gophers

Waiting for our turn at the sales auction line to be unloaded

We knew that we were going to have to sell one of our cows because he was born from our mother cow that we still have and for some reason he missed being castrated. So we needed to sell him before things got weird. I wasn’t feeling so bad about that, but what I was feeling a little sad about was that everyday I would go to the barn and call ‘here girls’ and the cows would all come running. I would give them ground corn, and everything was good with the world. When we wanted to sell him I took corn in the one shed and told the cows to come and they did. But then we backed the trailer up to the shed and took him to the sale barn. Now today – when I called the cows, they wouldn’t come for nothing! Sure it could be coincidence but they’ve come pretty much every day for months and now they wouldn’t come close to me. The mother cow just mooed all afternoon. I’m sure she thought that he was lost or something.  That’s when I felt bad. So now we’re looking for a couple of cows with calves at their side. Daryl thought there was some in the newspaper so we’ll have to check it out this week.

On a lighter note – I set my trap again for our gopher Slick. I decided that I am really good at finding the middle of the two tunnels but maybe not so good at catching the gopher. Tonight I put some fresh leaves from the neighbors corn in the tunnels. I was reading on the web (from Professional gopher hunters – true!) that gophers don’t like smells that they aren’t used to. I was wearing gloves before to hide the people smell but then I was thinking that maybe the tunnels were starting to smell like my fabric softener on the gloves. So I lived on the edge and went into the tunnels with my bare hands and then set the trap barefoot. I’ve come a long way.

Recipe tonight – homemade noodles (Not as good as my Mom’s but because we have eggs we make most of our pasta from scratch)
