Super Blue Blood Moon with an Eclipse. OK, try saying that 5 times fast!
If you were out and about Wednesday night on January 31st you might have noticed how bright is was. Now sometimes the moon is bright, but holy smokes tonight it really was bright! I was upstairs in our hallway and thought that the hall nightlight was still on, but it was just the moon coming through the window.
So what made it so bright? Here is what was written on NASA’s webpage
“The Jan. 31 full moon is special for three reasons: it’s the third in a series of “supermoons,” when the Moon is closer to Earth in its orbit — known as perigee — and about 14 percent brighter than usual. It’s also the second full moon of the month, commonly known as a “blue moon.” The super blue moon will pass through Earth’s shadow to give viewers in the right location a total lunar eclipse. While the Moon is in the Earth’s shadow it will take on a reddish tint, known as a “blood moon.”
Seriously if the moon could throw a party this would be the night!
So while I was watching the moon and sky change over the coarse of the night I couldn’t help to remember when I would take the kids outside when they were little all wrapped up in a blanket and we’d check out the stars while singing ‘I see the moon, and the moon sees me…..’ It seems like a million years ago and kind of corny now, but it’s a nice mom memory 🙂 Now even though the moon was the closest to the earth tonight coming at us within 223,068 miles, I was more fascinated how the clouds were dancing around the moon as it was trying to make it’s show stopping appearance early in the night!
