After the football game last night we went to the Country Club to talk about the game and have a few beers with some of the other parents. Well we started to talk about things that everyone should see at least once in their life. So of course some of the examples from me was the Spam Museum, The Largest Ball of Twine (would LOVE to see this!) and then I said Iowa’s Largest Frying Pan. No one really heard of this before. It’s located in Brandon, Iowa which is only about 1 1/2 hours from where we live.
How we found about it when we went to pick up Daryl’s Chevelle from Dewitt. When we were driving to pick up the car, we saw a sign that said where it was located and I told Daryl and William that I’m going to for sure stop in to see that frying pan when we come back. They gave each other ‘the look’ and didn’t say much. I didn’t want to miss the sign when we were driving home and because I was driving our car and Daryl and William was in the Chevelle in front of me, I knew that they were no help at all. So I finally saw the sign and called them on the cell phone to see if they were going to stop. And you can just about imagine their answer – No Way! Well I figured it was their loss and soon I found myself turning off Highway 30 to find it. I almost gave up because the town of Brandon is really small and when I was looking for someone to ask, there was not one person outside. So I just kept driving around and finally came to it. I wanted my picture taken inside the pan to show how big it was, but with Daryl and William not stopping and no one outside that I could find to help, that wasn’t going to happen this time. But I am telling you this, when I go visit the Ball of Twine – I’m taking someone with me to take that picture!
So I’ve come to the conclusion that when you are driving around on a Sunday, you just will never know what you can come across.
This is just like me finding the ‘Hippie Memorial’ in Arcola, IL! The last time I was there, the kid working at the gas station off the interstate didn’t even know about it, which was kind of sad in a way. Oh, and another goofy thing I had to go to when in the area, was the Superman statue in Metropolis, IL. Just had to do it, even though I’m not much of a Superman junkie.
OK–now that’s something you don’t see everyday!
